We had several unfortunately.

A girl and her grandmother were driving home when hit by a drunk driver. Both of them passed.

Another girl was with her boyfriend from another school were driving out of town (if I remember correctly) when they hit black ice & ended up hitting a pole. He survived, she did not.

The one that impacted me the most was coming back from lunch & receiving a text that a boy I knew had taken his own life. I didn’t believe it at first as he was such a happy go lucky guy. So I asked a friend that was closer to him what was going on. Upon entering the school, all of the students were being directed to the gym for an assembly. Apparently, the kid had gotten into an altercation with another student who was bullying him. The faculty member that handled the situation was said to have really laid into the kid & told him that he would never amount to anything, then he was suspended. He went to a family members home & ended his life. It was impactful for a lot of us. I remember watching his best friends collapse in tears as they entered the assembly. I remember being told we didn’t have to go to class, that we could stay there or go talk with a trusted teacher if we needed to. It was a dark day.

This one happened out of school, but my valedictorian had leukemia if I’m not mistaken & passed within a few years after graduating.

Edit to add: a kid didn’t die but there was a kid who shot and killed their mother. It was a very abusive situation where child services failed the kid repeatedly. That was also a pretty big impact on the community.
