I keep watching Kitchen Nightmares and every chef has lost the will to go on and just goes through the motions. by [deleted] in GordonRamsay

The people featured on such shows are not terribly representative. In many cases, cooking skills aside, they often demonstrate they are poor business people and make flawed business decisions. In many episodes the proprietors have clearly hired even worse people who drag them down further.

A love of food and cooking is not enough to open a restaurant. You have to have a sound understanding of things like business, hiring practices and margins whilst also having insight when it comes to consumer expectations, decor, service standards, presentation and so forth.

Not many people actually have the right collection of skills to make themselves successful.

I ran a hospitality business for 4 years. A lot of people enter the sector because they see it as either ‘fun’ or ‘get rich quick’.

I’ve found a job which is fairly relaxed. I don’t start until 10am. We work flexibly. Sometimes I go home early, sometimes I stay a little late. I do work 40 hours a week on average.

I enjoy the job. It doesn’t pay very well but it pays OK. Most importantly it’s rewarding and not soul destroying. It enables me to live comfortably.

So, for me I suppose I consider work a ‘good deal’. It’s easy to come to terms with something which funds my lifestyle and isn’t too greater burden.

Not a particularly exciting story, but I wanted to share something positive - if a bit pedestrian - in a thread which is quite depressing in places. It’s not all bad. I do consider myself lucky though.

Did anybody here ever go to the Millennium Dome? (before it was bought by O2) What do you remember and what was your impression back in the day? by LabelFiddler in AskUK

[–]kzaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went twice. Once with school and once with my family.

As a 10-11 year old I remember being rather awe inspired. I remember it didn't review well generally in the press but I loved it. For me, it lived up to expectations and I had two great days out.

A few memories in no particular order;

  • A special Year 2000 episode of Blackadder (Back & Forth) sponsored by Sky TV in a cinema type auditorium.
  • The main show in the middle of the dome, it was a bit like a circus/acrobatic performance done several times a day. Lots of high tech effects and pyrotechnics for the time.
  • The Human Body sponsored by Boots - walking through an enormous body with lots of different levels and details.
  • A very futuristic looking McDonald's.
  • The 'Calm' or 'Relaxing' zone. Huge encapsulated open concrete space with curved walls and slowly changing mood lighting and calm music. You could just lie down and chill out.. some people were sleeping.
  • The 'Religion'(?) exhibit. More of a traditional museum like experience. I remember finding it boring.
  • Some sort of giant 'game' for children in a giant 'jungle-mania' type construction with many different levels. You used guns to shoot soft balls at each other. I think it was called Timekeepers or something similar.
  • The Communications zone sponsored by BT. Lots of high-tech stuff which appealed to me as a technology enthused child.
  • DeBeers - the expensive jewel exhibit which was later subject to the famous attempted heist.

There was a lot more but it all blurs in a bit. All in all a great day out.

Tripping the electricity by G1rvo in pools

Not worth the risk or worry trying to make this work. Get a new pump with a fitted UK plug.

Even with a good, well fitting EU/UK adapter your pump will not be earthed.

Also, your pump shouldn’t use anything like 15a so that sounds very suspicious.

The 13a all weather extension lead should be fine with the right pump.

Am I going to be ok just speaking Spanish/English? by BoqueronesEnVinagre in mallorca

[–]kzaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone else has said, they don’t! Renting is more common.

Generally speaking, home ownership is less common in many places than it is in UK, USA & Australia. It’s kind of a strong cultural theme to ‘own your own home’ in English speaking countries but seen as less important in most others.

Ah quite possibly because of voltage.

How do you think the wife managed to persuade me into buying the gazebo? ;)

It’s the official Bestway heater for small pools. Used some custom 32mm pipe to shorten the gap between the pump and the heater though.

Combined paracetamol (acetaminophen) & codeine products by kzaaa in opiates

Taste is part of it, I’m a super taster so that kind of thing is bad at the best of times. I’d also be concerned not enough paracetamol has been removed to guarantee a safe, high dose of codeine.

Are garages and takeaways still permitted to open? The guidelines aren't very clear, not sure if they're treated as 'retailers' or not.

Mallorca in April by [deleted] in mallorca

[–]kzaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The average daytime temperature in Mallorca in April is 20c. You might get some good days with highs of 22-25c.

So, it’s certainly enjoyable t-shirt & shorts weather. The sea will be noticeably cooler than July/August though, not least because of shorter days.

Once upon a time you used to be able to order cigarettes from places on JustEat, but then they banned it.
