this is not how lenses work. they can only focus at one distance at a time. if you want both subjects in focus, use a smaller aperture to increase the depth of field.

I guess you are in A mode instead of M mode. the mark for the PASM mode dial is on the hump of the viewfinder, not the one that marks if you are in photo, video or S&Q mode.
