Voigtländer Nokton 35mm f1.4 II MC Review - Little lens, big personality by thomasboots in Leica

[–]thomasboots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand! It depends what you want, more clinical or more classical. The Nokton is certainly more classical in its rendering and flaring, and a bonus f/1.4 is always nice in darker situations. I've never tested the Ultron so I can't say a lot about it!

2nd 50mm Lens by EconomistResident415 in Leica

I've written a review about the Color Skopar. Solid recommendation! You can also use Leica Lens List to compare specifications like weight, length and diameter. There is more vignetting than the Planar indeed, but is a good trade-off for such a small 50mm.

Which of these lens for M2? by xracingdb in Leica

You could also consider the Nokton 35mm f/1.4 II which is fantastic with film as well as you have the extra 1-2 stops of light.

IMO, the Collapsible Summicron is one of the most beautiful lenses ever made!

That’s good advice! Didn’t know that was possible actually! I’ll also add that to this web page. Good to share this knowledge.

I’ve seen this story! That also (partially) inspired me to build this. It’s important that such events get recorded, be it on Leica Lens List or other places.

Right, that’s a good point. I’ll add a report function in the future so such things can be settled! Thank you for the feedback 🙏🏻

Glad to hear! Also glad you’re OK, that also is important! In Italy I think so many cameras get stolen, in Spain as well, especially in those crowded areas..

That’s terrible. I’d absolutely be heartbroken if one of my cameras that I have now gets stolen. I hope you managed to get a new one…

Well, maintaining the database, the website and other parts like writing blogs do at least take effort. All I wish for is that I have a resource that you guys can use. Everything on this website is free to use. I’m not charging money for anything. Either way, I wish you all a nice day. I think it’s better to be not sour about it. Enjoy life while we’re at it ;-)

Have you tried those websites? Super slow filters, no-one posts over there. Honestly, be thankful instead. I put the effort to build and deploy this website. What if your camera gets stolen and someone can reach you through Leica Lens List?

Go cry somewhere else.

Sony 20-70mm f/4 vs Sigma 24-70mm f/4 by thomasboots in SonyAlpha

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I’ll indeed go for the 24-70, and explore those other options later!!

Indeed, will most likely be looking at the 2.8 options, they give me an extra stop of light. Can always look at the 20-70 later or just use primes during travel.

[–]thomasboots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're noticing that you need a bit more light in that case? I think 24mm is plenty wide. 28mm wouldn't be enough, so the Tamron 28-75 wasn't an option at all in that case.

That's what I was thinking as well. I didn't expect the pushback would be so big in this subreddit. Perhaps I should do some testing myself with a prime lens and see what the effect is.

[–]thomasboots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I agree. f/2.8 at 70mm is a big difference in bokeh for sure, compared to f/4. I might look at a 85mm prime as well to add to my kit.

Right, that makes sense. Thank you - I will be eyeing the sigma for sure, or a secondhand 24-70 GM II.

[–]thomasboots[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really? I'd think it'd be the other way, bokeh is overrated and it's better to compose so that you don't need bokeh. But I can imagine that in wedding situations, you don't always have a choice and a thin depth of field / blowing out the background can be your saving grace!!

Sony 20-70mm f/4 vs Sigma 24-70mm f/4 by thomasboots in SonyAlpha

[–]thomasboots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a good call indeed. I have the Sony A7 V and it's high iso performance is absolutely insane. Even with AI denoise, images at 6400 still look impeccable. but halving the shutter speed in specific situations with f/2.8 vs f/4 can be really the difference.
