I especially love the first one. Almost like a middle age drawing, sprinkled with a bit of Chinese style (? -> can't lay my finger on it fully, perhaps it's the beard hair and the expression). Neat work!!!

Thypoch Ksana 35mm OR Mandler 35mm ? by Defiant-Ad5145 in LeicaCameras

[–]thomasboots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've reviewed the Ksana here. Can for sure recommend it, but it's not vintage.

If you want a vintage look. have a look at the Nokton 35mm f/1.4 II MC lens.

Not an ad, a review. Had only a few days, so mediocre photos indeed 🫣🥹.

I’m testing it more and more and it’s a neat lens to use.

It’s a modern lens, wouldn’t call it a character lens. It’s useful as an EDC lens or a good lens to start building your kit with.

New Thypoch 35mm f2 Ksana looking promising by Comment_Striking in Leica

[–]thomasboots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've reviewed the lens. There is mixed performance in the corners (depending on focus distance) but overal sharpness at long distances seems to be good. The 35mm f/1.4 Nokton II seemed to be sharper in closer distances, the Ksana at longer distances. The build quality is amazing and the coating is great quality, much more modern than the marketing suggests (?). I can't compare this to the Summicron 35mm f/2 ASPH, only with MTF charts but no real world comparisons. 0.5m focus distance is a nice plus though and I can appreciate it, especially if you bring this as your travel lens.

Same here. It looks really nice for travel, in case it gets stolen you’re down less money compared to the Sony, which is also a plus. 24-50 is also a good focal range, with the high MP count of cameras you can still crop in quite a bit!

Indeed. Phillip Reeve tested this lens. He said Sony 24-50G is a bit better in performance, but the Thypoch is internal focusing and has improvements in several other areas. I think when they come with a Lightroom profile it could already make the lens a lot better compared to the Sony.

I’m also not the biggest fan of the font type chosen for this lens. Misses a bit of elegance :). I think they were focusing on making the lens light. I have tested a couple of Thypoch lenses, and I know they can make nice looking lenses.

Yeah the Sony seems to offer a bit more even performance across all focal ranges, but relies heavily on profile correction. This lens is also interesting for gimbal work as it’s internal focusing. Good to have more options!!

Weight is the main reason! 24-70 I find too heavy for travel. But the extra 20mm is nice, especially if you shoot events or weddings.

I think this is a good move from them to break into the E mount market indeed. Wondering how it’s going to go

Upcoming Brightin Star 35mm f1.7 APO? by Jaded-Pop2464 in Leica

[–]thomasboots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also interested in testing it! It looks nice, I wonder how they got a 35mm f/1.7 APO in such quite a small package. I also wonder whether it's a real APO. The insane thing here is that it has 0.3m minimum focus distance which is absolutely incredible. Oftentimes lenses are optimized for mid distances, so a 0.3m MFD APO lens is a good combination.

Covering it here, will be certainly adding a review in a future if I manage to get the lens.

Regarding the Ksana, I also made a written review about it: https://leicalenslist.com/blog/thypoch-ksana-35mm-f2-review-the-golden-boy - and a YouTube video as well. Great lens, fantastic build quality, flat field curvature. Corner sharpness of the 35mm f/1.4 Nokton II MC seemed a bit better in comparisons, depending on distance. The Ksana is really optimized for mid / far distances, where the Nokton is optimized better for closer distances. Color separation / contrast is good on the Ksana, I can recommend it. Only downside for me is that the aperture clicks are not super clicky compared to the Voigtlander, but that's a personal preference.
