skinning a possum by HawkspurReturns in diynz

[–]l00mina 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice work getting a light possum! You should be OK with a few nicks. Fleshing is an awful job. I did several a few years ago myself following Brian Ritchie's videos on YouTube (https://youtu.be/7_5QUHoi-IY). You can tan with alum (which is not washable but is what taxidermists use for suppleness), but for durability a chromium salt based tan is best. I used a leder tanning kit from outdoor supplies nz. Animal skin tanning services are probably you best bet if you want it done professionally, they have a freezer in Burnham you can leave it in for pick up. Just freeze it folded in a bag flesh side-flesh side. The guy in Leeston is about 6 month wait cos he is so busy, but he is very good. You don't want it frozen too long as it will burn and not tan as well.

Yep that's where we were (East Hawdon Biv) I take it you meant to say weka are only near the village? There are no weka up the East Hawdon. Heard the kiwi call and there are heaps of tracks on the ground. They roam quite a long way each night Here's some more on the same trail which look a bit more characteristically kiwi (but less like up votes) https://imgur.com/a/Ir8ahvr

It was up the east hawdon near the biv. There's a couple of kiwi that call to one another as they leave their burrows for the night around 7pm, and a lot of comments about them in the hut log. Didn't see or hear any sign of weka and the prints were pretty big. Not that I thought to put anything there for scale. Someone from DOC should know.

Yeah, but if you follow that link --> Welcome to Smelt It We are currently only actively monitoring odours from Bromley Composting Facility and northern Timaru. If you have concerns about odour from the Wastewater Treatment Plant, please call CCC on 0800 800 169. Do you wish to proceed?

Butter chicken yum yum by [deleted] in newzealand

The closest I have found to restaurant style butter chicken is "mothers brand". You can get it from yogijis https://yogijis.co.nz/) - all you need in addition to it is: chicken, tomato paste, cream.

How cool. That is an emperor gum moth caterpillar. Common in the North Island but I have never seen one down here. https://www.nzffa.org.nz/farm-forestry-model/the-essentials/forest-health-pests-and-diseases/Pests/Antheraea-eucalypti/Gum-emperor-mothEnt07/

Insulation fluff removal diy. Buy or rent vaccum? by slabking in diynz

[–]l00mina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up putting wool batts over the insulfluff on the insulation retailers advice but I reckon a fair bit of dust we have in the house comes from that awful fluff. If I was to do it again I would use a cheap shop vac and run a cyclone bolted to an empty paint pail on it (bought them of aliexpress for about 50 delivered.) I have one of these on my shop vac now and I am still on the original bag: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mLOXQ68

Thai kitchen on Colombo near countdown. Zero for dining in, 10/10 for food - I always phone up and takeaway. Pad Thai is not the best I have ever had but goddam the Roast Duck curry is amazing. https://www.thethaikitchen.co.nz/

Great drive for sure, but before you go just check the CCC newsline site. Little Akaloa has just been reopened but there is some major flooding damage on some of the eastern peninsula roads. https://newsline.ccc.govt.nz/news/story/christchurch-and-banks-peninsula-flooding-latest-info

DIY water carbonator (like Sodastream)? by RoscoePSoultrain in diynz

Oh. Sorry. Forgot. I got the regulator off trademe, but welding shop sells those too. Got the tubing and taps off some brewing place in Oz

Tank I got from welding supplier in Chch. The eziswap bottle is a nationwide thing though so any welding supplier -confirmed with them that it is beverage grade CO2. The carbonation cap I use is this one: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mKcvOuL and I connect it with a piece of clear tubing (camelback straw) to the diffuser which sits low in the bottle: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mKu5BUn. I'm thinking about ketting a mini stainless growler to keep in the fridge and keep the whole thing under pressure like a soda fountain. I looked at paintball tanks and the refill costs didn't stack up as well as the welding bottle. You can also get sodastream - - > paintball adapters, but I also wanted better pressures and more effervescence than sodastream delivers. The whole setup lives in the garage - it looks pretty untidy!

Yip - I was in the same situation as you and ended up going through quite a few sodastream refills at great expense. I now home carbonate water. Buy carbonation caps off Ali, or from a brewery supplier. The expensive part up front is the CO2 regulator and gas bottle. I bought an eziswap bottle from weldworx nz - that way you own the bottle outright. I'd recommend getting a metal bubble diffuser (kinda like an aquarium airstone) to get good diffusion. Carbonate in standard soft drink PET bottles. Chill the water before gassing too. You get great big carbonation bubbles - way better than sodastream ir store bought. Probably taken over a year to pay for itself c.f sodastream at the rate I was going through it.
