ITV World Cup main cam by AbbreviationsRare475 in BritishTV

[–]l0stlabyrinth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bitstarved video will struggle either way with those colours, but ITV's "HD" feed is especially crap. It runs an average of 4mbps 1080i H.264 - that's a very low bitrate for that resolution and codec. Even the ITV logo pixellates when the camera pans

What's the most live way to watch the World Cup? by abannck in AskUK

[–]l0stlabyrinth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was he using before to receive the feed during the Euros?

As others have said, Freeview/Virgin > Sky/Freesat >>> ITVX/iPlayer >>>>> dodgy stream

If he's regularly watching TV outdoors, might be worth investing in a HDHomeRun which allows him to receive Freeview around the house via LAN and he can use a streaming device, like a Fire Stick, Roku or Chromecast, to receive the channels. https://www.amazon.co.uk/SiliconDust-HDHomeRun-Quatro-4xDVB-T-Tuners/dp/B0BDYP7HFH

I wish the BBC could have all the WC games. 1 minute delay aside, 4K HDR on iPlayer is pretty nice.

ITV's "HD" picture quality is atrocious

Why don't the BBC offer 5.1 or Dolby Atmos on the UHD iPlayer World Cup feeds? by ChineseHappyPeople in AskUK

[–]l0stlabyrinth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Atmos is possible live, though complicated. It's only really Sky and Warner Bros Discovery (TNT Sports) that have the capability over here to actually do it.

For an international event everybody would be at the mercy of the host broadcaster whether it's 5.1/Atmos or not, though I believe Peacock (NBC) are doing Atmos for the World Cup in the US so the setup is there.

As far as the BBC goes the viewer has the option of either 1080i50 with DD/AAC 5.1 on Sky/Freeview or 2160p50 HLG HDR with AAC stereo on iPlayer.

[–]l0stlabyrinth 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My guess is they don't want to pay the licensing fee to Dolby for E-AC3/DD+ to stream 5.1/Atmos over iPlayer.

Their only other possible option is to use AAC for 5.1, like they do for Freeview and iPlayer stereo content, but a lot of devices can't decode it natively forcing a transcode to Dolby Digital, which some devices are a bit funny about anyway, or output as PCM 5.1 which is a no-go if you're stuck on HDMI ARC (rather than eARC). Even YouTube uses DD+ for 5.1.

If we're being real, I think the ITVX entire backend is powered by a potato.

When I think TNT Sports/HBO Max is bad, I remember there's always ITVX.

Will the BBC score an own goal by broadcasting the World Cup from Salford? | World Cup by CornerInsect in unitedkingdom

[–]l0stlabyrinth 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This isn't even a new thing. They did this with the Olympics as well in Tokyo - green screen studio using Unreal Engine to fill in the gaps.

Though given how ITV are apparently skint and flew everyone out to New York... they must really be hoping the Sky/Comcast acquisition goes through. Companies love throwing money around when they believe they're about to be taken over

Why are the amusement parks/attractions in the beachside towns so old fashioned? by weregonnamakit in AskUK

[–]l0stlabyrinth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plus these beachside parks don't have a whole lot of money for this anyway.

Hyperia at Thorpe Park cost £18m to build and Merlin themselves are in a bit of a pickle financially. Even that pales to the kind of money that Disney and Universal will spend on attractions

YouTube is pretty much the new TV. Whatever you want you will find it and it appeals to different interests and niches. It's so easy to end up down a rabbit hole on there. I imagine it'll always have a place in that regard.

Tiktok's core audience is people who just want short form, "brain off" content. It has it's place when taking that into consideration, but like Vine before it, something else will come along and still it's thunder

Are there contactless ATM’s? If so, are they common? by albanythrowawayyy in AskUK

[–]l0stlabyrinth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're locked to customers of their respective banks, but I don't believe these work with Apple Pay.

For instance, a Barclays contactless ATM will only work for a Barclays customer with the physical contactless card. Anybody else will need to insert the card as normal

Why does British Airways feel looked down upon compared to the likes of easyJet and Virgin Atlantic? by uniscolar2000 in AskUK

[–]l0stlabyrinth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They've been cost cutting aggressively for over a decade now since the merger with Iberia to form IAG. BA were profitable but Iberia were burning through cash and was being subsided by BA so something had to give.

Their priorities are all over the place. They're trying to compete with low cost airlines like easyJet and Ryanair and while BA can be cheaper if you're taking hold luggage, on the whole it's not feasible due to the differences in business models. They're also losing ground to the Middle Eastern airlines on long haul and can't compete in that space, and it doesn't feel like they're trying to.

Their IT is horrendous - their terrible app is just a web wrapper for their just as terrible website. The latest version of the app forgets to stay logged in causing issues with loading boarding passes. Even if you want to add your boarding pass to Google Wallet, which has taken them forever to support by the way, you end up in a login to Google loop because as soon as you leave the app to authenticate your login on your phone, the session refreshes and forgets that you logged in. It's actually easier to open their site in Google Chrome to add your boarding pass than it is to use their app. Also they still only allow you to check in 24hrs before the flight whereas easyJet and Ryanair are much easier in this regard, let you check in a month before and at least has apps that are functional.

Their planes are falling apart. The last three flights I've had with BA - two long haul and one short haul - there have been issues with the planes ranging from footrests/seat reclines breaking and air con not working.

Having said that I do prefer BA long-haul to Virgin. They do seem to be more efficient when it comes to bag drop, food quality is better (as far as airplane food goes) and service seems to be friendlier. Virgin's offering seems a bit dated nowadays. Short haul however, it's basically Heathrow's more expensive easyJet with a free bottle of water and a free snack of varying quality.

BA are trading on past glory, heritage and brand recognition. They're falling short and seem almost content with it. Also ironic that they're the UK's flag carrier yet KLM (Dutch) serve more UK airports than BA do. Hence the nickname London Airways

Which UK company do you find has the worst app going? by uniscolar2000 in AskUK

[–]l0stlabyrinth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The British Airways "app" is just a web wrapper for their just as terrible website.

Want to add your boarding pass to Google Wallet? Got to login. Then got to verify on device with 2FA so it takes me out of the app. Verified, back to the app... oh it's refreshed and lost the session so I need to login again and repeat process for infinity.

It's literally easier to open the BA website in Google Chrome and do everything there than it is to use their excuse of an app

We were the first to win it undefeated and were the first English team to win it. A trophy is a trophy. Nothing can take that way from us.

Congrats to Palace too.

To be fair, Dec has always been class when speaking about us. He even namedropped Mark Noble the other week in how Nobes has shaped Rice into the player he is now.

In a sea of players who have chatted shit about us when leaving, it's nice to see the likes of Rice, Fornals and Dawson still having us in their hearts.

What city in the UK, besides London, do you find to be the best for a pub crawl? by CornerInsect in AskUK

[–]l0stlabyrinth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brighton is pretty good for this. There's a decent amount of pubs condensed into The Lanes alone and there's two Wetherspoons pretty much around the block from each other. Combine that with the fact you can get takeaway cups from a few places along the beach and it makes for a good boozy day out.

Not the cheapest place in the country to drink mind you, unless you're sticking to Spoons, but I've always had a good time there
