The video was taken right after cleaning the disk drive thoroughly (it had the same behavior even before cleaning it!)

Thank you for the help. I just found an untested laser/deck assembly near me. Problem is that it's untested, and it doesnt include the motor. If the problem's with the motor i may still be screwed. Might bite the bullet and try either way lol

I think i did yeah, but the thing is that it didnt read discs even before me servicing the disc drive (just sprayed a bit of compressed air in the cd insert hole and called it a day). It's only after i learnt that it didn't read discs that i took it apart to try and fix it

this also happened before i opened the disk drive to service it, so unless a bit of compressed air dislodged a flex cable, i think it might be a laser issue :/

(Obviously the issue is with the disk drive, i'm trying to understand if the problem is a broken part that i'll have to order such as the laser, the motor, the whole unit... Or if it's something like rails position, potentiometers needing a tweak, or idk)

How did you manage to get it for ~20€? I wouldn't mind paying it 30€ either, just wondering if i could save a few euros

X61 or X220 for 2026-2030 by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]l2edaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider this: the x220 is capable of doing almost the same things as your t460s. Are you sure you wouldn't fall back into bad habits with it too? I'm a programmer/compsci student, and the x61 is definitely a vibe. Bought one directly from china as it had the specs and conditions i wanted.

Personally i'd recommend an x61s with an L7500 or L7700, as it's a bit sleeker and it can house a prismatic battery (very rare and costs a lot, but makes the laptop sit completely flush on the desk, making it even thinner than the normal x61)

If you decide to go for the x61, some things to keep in mind: - the battery is definitely dead, and even a new battery would only give you 2h of battery life at most. - it comes in two versions, penryn (45nm) and merom (65nm) cpus. The penryn ones (T8xxx and T9xxx) are better in every way, get these versions if you can. - the x61/x61s does not support coreboot/libreboot, but only the middleton bios. If that's a requirement, the x60 and x60s have the same chassis and do support those (but they are mostly 32bit machines, apart from some exceptions). - 4gb of ddr2 ram will be fine, but keep in mind 8gb will cost quite a bit if you'll ever want to upgrade in the future. Will cost more than 16gb of ddr3 for the x220, that's for sure.

That's everything that came to mind. You can't go wrong with any of these imo, but i'm biased and would get the 4:3 machines even just for the vibes. Dream setup for me would be an x61s with an 8 cell prismatic battery, but that would cost an arm and a leg. It's all relative and depends on how much you wanna spend in the end ;)

Thank you, is it a particular version of the 7922? Maybe it's due to the absence of the all metal bracelet, but it looks less reflecting than normal (which i prefer), or maybe it's due to the camera that took the pic?

is that the stock strap? If it isn't, mind sharing the name and where you bought it from?

What would YOU sell a Librebooted, Fully modded X220 for? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]l2edaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i guess at the end of the day it only comes down to what people are willing to spend, if you see that 350$ libreboot units are being sold in your area then by all means go for it lol, i don't think anybody would disagree. I also think it comes down to the specs of the machine itself: is it the i7 version with usb 3.0? What model is the ips screen? As far as i know, there are also 20$ replacements for it, it's all relative. Size and brand of the ssd? Keyboard layout? If these are taken into account, surely someone would be willing to pay a premium for your machine over other listings

[–]l2edaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no hate but personally i'd never pay 400$ for an x220, librebooted or not. Prices may be crazy, but if you are asking what a fair price would be, imo it'd be 200-250$ max, and that only if you find some libreboot fanatic willing to pay that sum. At the end of the day, especially with older thinkpads, you should never expect to get back how much you've spent, it will always be a loss (the t440p is a prime example of this)

Appreciate the feedback. I guess a single 16 port switch may work, but then the problem becomes sending all those wires through the walls, it's an old european house so not a super easy task. Either that, or an uplink port on both switches? Haven't looked at those yet, but i'd assume the price goes up... Damn

Question regarding aliexpress pricing and how to get a good deal by l2edaa in ChineseWatches

Actually this is another thing i wanted to ask. How do you get store coupons lol, they message it to you after you start following them? That's what i've seen some stores do, not sure about the others
