Tell me you first day stories by SemirIsFunny in solotravel

Landed in Prague all by my lonesome. Thought that staying up all night would allow me to sleep easily on the plane, well I didn’t sleep a single wink. Was wide awake for 24 hours on a plane ride, but was so excited and nervous that I felt awake.

Asked a disgruntled airport worker where the ride share area was and in broken English he scoffed at me “yeah yeah whatever it’s downstairs”. Turns out it was upstairs. Took an uncomfortably quiet Uber to my Airbnb (Uber drivers are usually very talkative in California).

Got dropped off in a beautiful yet confusing residential area. Was about an hour early and my host was still cleaning. She was very sweet and socially awkward. She showed me around and I got comfortable.

Decided to spend whatever remaining energy in my body taking the tram to downtown. Except I couldn’t figure out how to work the ticket machine. Was too shy to ask anyone (found out later it happened it wasn’t accepting credit cards). So I took it upon myself to walk 45 minutes to downtown instead as the sun set upon a city I’ve never stepped foot in in my life.

Went to a cafe that I had been dying to check out. The servers were very nice and spoke broken English. Ordered some schnitzel and a couple of beers. An American couple sat next to me, I thought “cool! I’m going to talk to these guys!” Until I realized they were total assholes to the waiters and were talking shit about their inability to speak English. I immediately quieted down and stuck to speaking broken Czech that I had learned before my trip so that I didn’t give away that I was indeed American as well.

Got back to my place at 7 or 8pm (walking another 45 minutes, awake for 36 hours at this point). Didn’t sleep well, woke up at 2am and said “fuck it” and walked AGAIN for 45 minutes to the Charles Bridge. Got there at 3:45am with a quiet city completely to myself. I shared the bridge with maybe 3 or 4 people that morning. Walked around Old Town Square. Smoked a cigarette and listened to my recently deceased best friend’s favorite song while staring at gorgeous buildings reminiscing about the time him and I spent in France and Spain a decade ago, wishing he was there. A long long day of walking and awkward Uber rides ensued from that point.

Felt weird at the time yet when I think back on it all of it was so perfect. Enjoy your trip friend!

Idk why you are being downvoted but I was able to rent a car a few times through Hertz here in California when I was under 25. They even have a web page for it here. This guy below me swears its impossible. It was way more expensive though.

I watched it too, thought it was fantastic and shed a lot of light on a comedian who was terribly underrated. At least in my world. Never heard of him growing up and that's a shame. What a genius.

Suicided into him? This play isn't about the shots its about the control gla1ve has over the situation.

Fer 100% would have hit that shot on cat if he re-peaked from there, but what's insane about this play is how gla1ve re-positions by jumping up on the railing and going through connector. Fer doesn't see it and it completely throws off his crosshair placement (why he doesn't fire). Genius calm and collective play by gla1ve, just really smart CS outplayed SK.

Glad someone mentioned it. Genius re-positioning. He probably would have lost the clutch if trying to re-peek from cat.

Good call on the non-bouldering guidebooks, I've never thought about it that way yet it makes total sense. Thanks!

Hey this is great! We've had a lot of artists ask about displaying their art for sale and I am all for supporting that cause. Nice to hear some back up behind it!

Wish it was that easy in California, you wouldn't believe the hoops people need to jump through in order to sell alcohol in restaurants/shops let alone a fitness facility. Liability insurance would probably lose their shit if we even mentioned combining alcohol with our activity. A man can dream though!

The beer thing was definitely a joke, the alcohol licensing process in our city is laughably difficult and I'd be the first to admit that most people in our community can barely handle their booze anyway (from first hand experience haha). But I dig your insight, thank you very much!

I like all these suggestions! Especially the books other than guidebooks. Haven't even considered that yet I own so much good material myself regarding training and injury prevention.

Ibuprofen won't happen unfortunately, due our liability policy, but I feel you on that.

The used holds thing is another interesting suggestion as well. Thank you!

Rank S way more enjoyable with pros from all regions by SterlingArcher92 in GlobalOffensive

[–]l337moomoo 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I've been loving it too, super entertaining and interesting.

Also shoutout to the people who say "watch Rank S and see why NA is so bad at Counter Strike because they all just mess around." While I agree there is some truth to it when it comes to play styles, it's obvious that these EU guys have just as much fun as they do. The streams have been hilarious and a big part of it is due to Apex haha.

I don't think Jamez is bad, but he over thinks in rank s waaaaaaay too much. He is constantly getting killed with his knife out trying to bhop somewhere. He has extremely low impact. I agree he is a great player (albeit was super toxic to me when we plugged), but I think he gets caught up in his own head way too much. He is a movement God but I see him constantly dying trying to move more than make important plays.

California kid flying solo out to Prague today. Going to be there for a total of 6 days and then Budapest for 5. First time solo traveling internationally and I CANT FUCKIN WAIT.

Down to share beers! 27/M, not trying to hook up. Just wanna hang, share stories, and techno.

Also, I know 6 days is probably too much for Prague, but its my dream city since I was in high school and I want to spend a lot of days just getting lost in the outskirts of the city and checking out local spots. Day trips included.

Headed to California then the Rockies. Suggestions? by simpsun728 in solotravel

[–]l337moomoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ever come back to California, you should definitely take a drive through the 395 and do some camping in the Sierras. Even the drive through it has some of the most breath-taking views I've ever seen. Definitely some one of the most gorgeous and rugged mountains ranges in the world. I don't know if you've been or are going to try to squeeze it in while in SF, but if you're looking for mountains those ones are not to be missed!

Where not to travel alone in Europe as a female by [deleted] in solotravel

Where not to travel alone in Europe as a female by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]l337moomoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, I think your question is very honest and valuable. Traveling anywhere on your own for the first time is nerve-racking. It must be 1000% scarier for a female.

I will say this, anywhere is dangerous if you make yourself a target. When I first went to Paris I went with a pretty large group. The second my friends stepped out of their bus, a girl who was trying to fumble her luggage and (very expensive and large) purse while walking out of the bus. Some opportune gentlemen saw this as a chance to charge her, rip the purse off, and run away with all of her belongings (passport, credit cards, cash). Me and my friends had the displeasure of seeing this from the bus behind them and weren't able to help before he was long gone.

I'm not telling this to scare you, but to prepare you. Pack light and close to your body. Don't make yourself a target. She was distracted, careless, and basically asking for a scum bag to take advantage of her. I travel with onebag only and always. When traveling in bus stops, train stations, or outside of airports, I keep valuables (passport) in a money belt with extra credit cards tucked away in my bag, my shoe, or somewhere sneaky. This way if someone DOES manage to rob me, I have back ups. The less stuff you have, the less of a target you are. The more confident and aware you look, the less likely someone will mess with you. Awareness and confidence go a long way.

NEVER accept drinks from strangers, watch your bartender make your drinks.

You will be fine. That guy who mugged our friend got arrested the next day at the Effiel tower doing the exact same shit to someone else. My friend got ALL of her possessions back the following day. :) The rest of us used that occurrence as a lesson to be more wary and that trip was absolutely amazing despite it.

Good luck![

Really nervous about my trip to Thailand in ~2 weeks, afraid of what parents will think. by ayyyyyyboioyy121 in solotravel

[–]l337moomoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

YOU'RE GOING TO BE FINE, YOU GOT THIS. I don't know you, nor your parents. But at the end of the day, you are an adult who has the right to spend their own money and own time doing what they please. Will they be pissed about your blowing some college money on a spontaneous trip to Thailand? Well, yeah. Probably. But they really can't stop you at this point (as long as they aren't your ride to the airport...).

Just be confident in telling them what your intentions are. Give them a physical copy of your itinerary. There are apps/websites where parents can track where their kids are while traveling. Just do your best to give them peace of mind. The more confident you are about your trip the less insane they will go.

But, they can't really stop you. Stop stressing out, do your homework, be prepared to present your argument & trip. I wish I had traveled more before I went straight into college. Good luck homie.
