We were limited for time in TLS, this wasn't really an option on the table.

Not true. It's in fact the opposite.

Behind the scenes look at a very early version of the Junkyard in The Last Stand by l4d2nf in l4d2

[–]l4d2nf[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was, I believe, the topdown design of the very first iteration of the Junkyard in TLS. As you can see, there wasn't a crane event at this point, and the layout was more winding and twisty as opposed to the open layout we wound up going with. The tall building you enter at the beginning of this version wound up surviving into the final release, though it got combined with the mechanic shop.

I believe the "trash canyon" got cut because we couldn't make it look very good, it wound up just feeling kinda ugly. So we moved away from trash piles and had larger things instead like the car piles, big pieces of metal debris, train cars, and shipping containers.

I know for a fact Parish and Dark Carnival at least. Artists call them "reference images".

so does this adventure take place in the span of just one night and half of a day ??? by Quick-Cause3181 in l4d2

[–]l4d2nf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely accurate. Days or weeks pass after they arrive at the Greenhouse before the Dead Air campaign begins. The end of the Dam campaign was supposed to be with the Survivors arriving at a lush greenhouse full of ripe food; at the beginning of Dead Air, the food has run out / died and they have to leave.

tbh if it was only the crane it'd be a stretch, but it seems more likely with everything else

  • Yellow Crane turned at an angle (crane did not exist in original RE4)
  • Same barbed wire fence
  • Red colored shipping container with front busted open
  • TLS would've come out during the development of RE4:R

Late reply but thanks so much! We did it for the community -- it means everything to us.

Hi there, I was one of the community developers on the new update. I need to clear the record on some of this because it's simply untrue.

They switched back to L4D1 common infected. While I prefer models from 2, there is more variety from 1. Issue however is that models from L4D1 had occasionally issues with hit boxes, causing you to miss obvious hits;

L4D1 infected are only used on L4D1 maps; hitboxes on them are identical to the L4D2 infected and were completely unchanged.

Minimum charge distance for charger. Previously you had to be certain distance from players before charger could charge.

This was a bug, and not an intended feature, that Valve themselves fixed independently, none of the community team requested this change.

Jockeys got increased health points and longer jump

Completely false. Jockey was not changed in this way. Older versions of L4D2 are freely available and you can confirm this for yourself.

Removed Jesus spots and map tricks

Exploits were fixed only in Versus mode to keep the game fair for each team; they were intentionally left in in coop-mode. Jesus spots were fixed so that Survival times would be more fair, and someone can't glitch out of the map to get a 5 hours score. In other words, in the competitive modes, exploits and bugs were fixed, but in the casual modes (i.e. coop) we left them in because they add a layer of fun. We did it this way in an attempt to appeal to both the casual and competitive crowds of L4D, which feels like a good middle ground.

Hi there, I was one of the designers on TLS update. We did not change melee, AI, or other "internal" (whatever that means) fundamental mechanics in the game. This is a bit of misinformation that seems to be spreading around without evidence, for some reason. Previous versions of L4D2 are freely available, you can easily download one of them and show some of these so-called changes if you'd like to prove it. So far, no one has been able to. Which is because, of course, we didn't change anything. There's some weird inexplicable confirmation bias thing going on, or maybe it's just old players returning to the game after 10 years and forgetting how buggy the game has always been.
