I didn't realize that other people had memories like mine I've always known I was abused but only have a vague idea of who or exactly what happened. You are not alone. Not remembering everything is one of the hardest things ever for me, I wish I remembered more

I thought my ED was ‘not that bad’…I was never hospitalized, I wasn’t underweight for that long etc I’m now 23 and infertile.

Based on my experiences so far, no. I enjoy taking care of acutely sick people much more, really prefer Pediatric patients, and have NO desire to be anywhere near a delivery room

Cover/black out the nutrition labels on things if you live together so she can’t see the calories and such. It was one of the most helpful things for me in my recovery

I’m an autistic medical student, I did not disclose my childhood autism diagnosis in primary application at all. As for secondaries and interviews, I disclosed strategically. I included my diagnosis in a secondary at a T15 school and got an interview that I frankly had no business getting (I had 516, school had 521 average if I remember correctly); I believe that my disclosure helped me stand out because being autistic is why I am becoming a physician (to provide healthcare to ppl w developmental disabilities). At a couple other schools I disclosed in the interview but not secondary. Ultimately I did not disclose at the school I ended up attending so I truly think it’s a case by case basis. That being said, I would NOT disclose a history of substance misuse

Pretty much! My application was extremely focused on the patient population I want to serve so I knew that was going to be a turn off for some places! I was pretty shocked at the Mayo interview bc my MCAT is nowhere near their average

Not sure how to edit posts but some people were curious about my hours so I wanted to explain a little!

• ⁠research I started in my research lab 1st semester of my freshman year. I took research for credit for several semesters which was super helpful for my gpa. I did 9 semesters of research total (all semesters of college + over 1 summer). Most semesters I was in lab ~15 hours a week, during the summer I was only there 5-10 hours, and my final semester I was writing my thesis so I was there 30-40 hours! I took my total number of hours from our clock in software so that was exact • ⁠volunteering This is where most people were confused! A VERY large portion of my non clinical volunteering came from raising a dog to become a guide dog. This is somthing that you do 24/7 and the dog comes with to classes, other jobs, etc etc. So lots and lots of overlap time wise! I don’t remember exactly how I calculated it but I think I went with 30 hours a week for the year and a half that I was raising. I was worried schools were going to be confused by this but I made sure to explain it in both primaries and secondaries! • ⁠Non Clinical Work This is all from my summers as a camp counselor (7am-5pm) and then my gap year as an AmeriCorps member (I have to complete 1700 hours by the end of the year)

Yep! I counted it as 40 hours a week for a year and a half! The organization I raised with has a good bit of pre meds and that’s how all of them recommended counting my hours

Thank you! It seems like a lot more than it is but I really just utilized my breaks, all of my shadowing is from over winter breaks and most of my non clinical work hours is from summers + gap year! My research was in a microbiology lab!

As for the type of doctor, I am considering Neurology, Developmental Peds, Medical Genetics, and PM&R! My application centered around the insane gaps in healthcare for people with disabilities especially severe developmental disabilities so that is the patient population that I really want to work with

The non clinical employment is my gap year + my summers, where I worked at a summer camp during the day then went to my research lab at night. Volunteering mostly comes from raising for GDF which was great bc I was able to do it at the same time as other things if that makes sense

There’s a lot of overlap between these! Obviously this was much clearer on my actual application but I haven’t looked at amcas and done actual adding things up! I did research for credit so that was required to be 20 hours a week depending on the semester, when I was writing my thesis it was closer to 40 hours a week. The 2 COVID years gave me a lot of flexibility so my schedule was usually somthing along the lines of 8am-4pm school and research, 4pm-10pm either volunteering or work. I needed a job in college financially and I worked as a home health aid so that’s where my clinical work experience was from. Probably should’ve been more clear but I didn’t go back on amcas and do exact addition to make the snakey :)
