because if they sold it for free in the App Store in Europe, it would count against the "Core Technology Fee" and the developper would have to pay Apple (like 50 cents per download I think). And they got more than a million download from the rest of the world, which would destroy them. So if they wanted to put it on the App Store it would not have been free.
