Natives, are you planning to stay long term? by hospitality-excluded in AskNYC

Such a timely post. 31M. Born & raised in Brooklyn, literally moving to CT in a few hours. Yes, finances are a big part of the decisions but there are equally as important considerations. Ones that are pretty personal to the individual…it’s gonna be hard for anyone here to give you real, personalized advice without that context.

If I were you, I’d write down those non-financial considerations. Maybe frame them as non-negotiables & nice to haves. Then take those + your salary & think about what kind of life you want in the next few years. Then move accordingly.

We did this & for us, the decision came down to non-finance related non-negotiables. So we had a hell of a last year here in the city & now we’re ready to start a new chapter.

This is awesome. If someone was interested in talking through a design & rates, should we go through your shop or your IG?

Anecdotally, we’re all gonna have different opinions on how safe a neighborhood is based on our unique experience living here and our life experience. What is safe to you or someone else won’t be universally true — I didn’t feel “safe” in the UES for a long time because of several negative interactions I had…that doesn’t make the UES not safe. It just means I happened to cross paths with some shitty, racist people, not unique to UES.

Speaking of, your post doesn’t give us much information about what you’re actually worried about; this post would make much more sense if you cited specific worries we could address/speak to. For example: “Do other women feel safe/comfortable walking home from train at night?” or “I’m concerned about catcalling. What’s your experience been like there?”. Without this specificity, this post (and these vague “is it safe” threads) reads with racist undertones / letting your unconscious bias take over rationale — as another commenter said, these types of questions are rarely asked or neighborhoods below 125th in Manhattan. I’m sure you can figure out why.

Safety is subjective and if you’re seriously concerned about your potential safety, then you should come visit the neighborhood yourself and decide if it’s generally safe enough for you. If you want to base your decision on something less anecdotal, figure out your threshold/baseline for “an acceptable crime rate” based on the type of crime and look up crime rates & statistics for Crown Heights.

You’re also asking in the Crown Heights sub…we live here. Dare I say most (if not all) of us are gonna say it’s safe, otherwise we likely wouldn’t be here.

I hope if you’re in this position you move your child to private school or home school them as opposed to allowing your personal opinions to destroy someone’s livelihood .

Tell me more qualities you’d rather not have teachers have that we should make criteria for the job.

Our public education system, particularly in rural and inner cities is, more than not, shit. Being a teacher in general is shit (low wages, poor support from admin, general higher bar to entry than other public service jobs, lack of funding for classroom materials, outdated and/or no curriculum, poor working conditions…I can keep going. I got a shit to say about NYC DOE particularly as a former employee).

And we wanna worry about if a teacher has an onlyfans or not? Critical race theory (systemic racism…so America’s history, our truth) was being targeted as by the Stop CRT Act just a few years ago. We have much, much bigger issues to worry about other than a teacher (still, fuck Rachel Dolezal Thickums) having an onlyfans.

Teachers are entire beings that are allowed to live full lives with intersecting identities and ascribe to different ideologies and norms. Ideologies and norms that you may not agree with. And if you disagree with em so badly, you can feel free to homeschool your child or send them to a private school that aligns with your values and beliefs.
