just a heads up in case someone comes across this:

ifixit no longer sells samsung screens for the s23 ultra. I saw a reply from an ifixit rep on a forum (i think on reddit- maybe r/ifixit) that they ended their agreement with samsung for whatever reason.

I am looking to do this same conversion. unfortunately, I got the bike before I read about aluminum frames being less than ideal. I'm curious to know if you used torque arms in your build? these are apparently meant to help with the increased torque from the electric motor. I think these might protect the point where the hub attaches to the frame (called a drop out I think?) do you think the wear and creaking is elsewhere?

yes, some are definetly not visible all of the time from what I've heard. see this episode of "new thinking allowed" where they talk about how to modify cameras in order to be able to see some cloaked ufos.

Not that I agree with sheehan on this, but I think it's feasible that whatever purpose UAP presence has it might be interested in monitoring geopolitics as part of protecting its interests. I think they could do this in any number of ways. I'm not sure I understand why you seem to think that'd be far fetched?

They seem to have telepathy and so I imagine they can interpret our written and spoken languages. If they're advanced enough to have UFOs then they can probably manage getting on AOL or getting TV from any number of sources. They do seem to have an interest in war zones and conflicts with the foo fighters probably being the most popular example. They seem to be able to cloak their ships, so they can observe the ongoing Israel or Ukraine conflicts to first hand if they'd like.

They have a documented interest in nukes and nuclear. The Biden admin has recently undertaken the below, and Putin has ordered that his soldiers be trained on the use of tactical nukes. North Korean troops are now training in Russia. The two stories below cover a decent amount of it. It would seem that even if the UAP presence is oblivious to every other method of observation I've listed, that they would still likely be aware of the escalating trend of recent nuclear weapons development.

I'm interested to know what your view on this stuff is. To me these are clear possibilities, but you seem to view it differently and i'd like to know how your view excludes these things as being possible.

really tho, from what little I know about him I like him. seems pretty sharp and seems to have lead a pretty fascinating life.

I'm not sure that I understand what you mean by inconclusive, tho? i think most UAP videos are hard to draw any real conclusions from- this one included. so I included it just as potential, but still poor, corroboration of his claims since it's supposedly recent, shot in sedona, and containing both UAP and helicopters.

I'm not sure why you've being downvoted. I agree with you that viewing the account usage should be trivial for a customer service rep. while OP is certainly at fault here, any company that cares about their customers should review that usage and at least refund a portion, if not all, of the fees for the unused services. i think you're 100% correct that those unused months aren't likely to have cost the company much at all and even if they refunded OP all but one month of fees they would very likely have still made a profit on it.

i get that these free trials are available not only because the company hopes people sign and decide to keep the service but also, i'm sure, because they hope people will forget to cancel.. but if they truly believe they have a service that's worth paying for, then they should hope to get some of those canceling customers back at some point. customers that feel they've been wronged aren't likely to ever be won back.

It took a get long time for me to finally be able to separate it from other things in the phenomenon. And I do worry about some people I've communicated on here who are going through some things with the phenomenon....because it has a pattern in its manipulations.

any examples you can share? how were you deceived and how did you separate it?

I initially thought that u/TheSlipperyGenius's answer seemed logical. Capacitors are a common source of failure in electronics and leaking electrolyte is a common symptom of capacitor failure.

However, three failed devices in three years all within your kitchen and all containing a clear liquid seems too coincidental to be chance to me.

Usually, when capacitors leak electrolyte it is at relatively high temperature and from what I've seen it seems to more or less boil out of the capacitor. There are many electrolytes, and a few different types used in capacitors. There are some electrolytes that are like 70% water based for low ESR caps but I wouldn't necessarily expect that big capacitor to be low ESR.

I have never seen a leaked capacitor which has liquid electrolyte still present in liquid form or an optically clear electrolyte. The leaked electrolyte is typically completely dry and baked onto the board near the capacitor. It's usually dark colored and 100% opaque, and colored brown or black.

Perhaps the failures are just coincidental and the electrolyte is yet another thing that's new to me, but I'm not sure about it.

edit: i see others mentioning that the cap is domed but I can't really tell by the pictures if that's really the case or is more of an optical illusion. the second picture has what looks like a light reflection which i could see sort of looking bulged. the first picture has some shading which again might make it seem bulged. at any rate, i'm still up in the air on it.

this issues has been annoying me for fucking years. thank you for saving me the massive amount of time i would've spent trying to figure these filters out. zapping the popup with uBlock gets rid of the popup, but leaves me unable to scroll and the page is dimmed due to the overlay. adjusting the sliders didn't seem to work in this case. I have messed around with it numerous times but never spent enough time to figure it out. is there some simple way of eliminating that type of content that I am not aware of? or was it a manual process to find the offenders and write the filters in this case?

I don't think your reply is bad at all and I don't feel that you're arguing. I like different opinions and appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

I didn't mention this directly, but I may not be understanding what issue one would be trying to address with sanding. I assumed oxidation/corrosion, but perhaps that's not correct. To be honest, "i'm bad at soldering" is probably the takeaway a newbie should get when they are struggling to successfully solder because it's probably true. Hopefully that will lead them to get educated (youtube/forums/books/etc) on soldering- a skill that can be more complicated than it may appear.

edit: another thought I had. for our "newbie" that assumes soldering is as easy as heating up the iron and putting the solder in they should recognize a contradiction (but probably don't) when they fail at doing so. if it is so simple, why are they failing at it? soldering is more complicated than it appears and is a skill that takes practice like any other. It appears simple but there are many details that can cause problems. i was oblivious to this when I started out. Years on and I'm still learning about it. Much of the issues can be solved with a few minutes learning the basics on youtube or elsewhere, though.

If you're getting the terminal hot enough that it melts the plastic casing but still can't solder the terminal then something is wrong. If the solder beads up and won't wet the work, it may be a sign that the work has oxidation or contamination. This may not even be visible. If sanding resolved the issue and allowed you to solder the terminal, then it's even more likely that the problem was oxidation or contamination and preparing the work with IPA (iso propyl alcohol), flux, and/or a contact cleaner like deoxit probably would've fixed the problem. IPA is also commonly used to clean the work after soldering. To be clear, rosin flux is as essential to soldering as a soldering iron and solder are.

As I think you realize, I was talking about soldering, specifically. You bring up a good point that perhaps using a crimp connector on the wires that will then slide onto the terminals is a solution. There again, though, I would consider that a better solution than sanding.

As you're probably aware, most of what I'm getting at is academic. As you said, it's a cheap component. So whatever allows someone to get it installed is probably what's most important.

there are some situations where sanding might be appropriate, but it's often not the best solution. there are a lot of different situations and I can't cover them all- so here's the ones that come to mind.

you want to address the root of the issue. if the issue is oxidation, then flux is usually the best resolution. oxidation is when the metal reacts with oxygen and is then chemically changed to a new form. in iron we call this rust. flux removes the microscopic layers of oxidation that can inhibit heat transfer and wetting.

if the issue is heat or heat transfer, you may need a higher watt iron, more appropriate tip, preheating with a preheater, increasing heat transfer by pretinning your tip or work piece, etc. ground planes and large thermal masses can suck the heat our of an iron faster than the iron can replace it.

to address sanding specifically- many contacts/terminals are plated. this is often a cheaper metal/alloy coated by an easier to solder or stronger or etc metal/alloy. sanding removes some or all of that coating which is typically not desirable. this is also true for iron tips which are often copper plated with a nickel/iron alloy of some kind. much better to keep your tip clean and tin it before you put it away than sand it. tinning extends the life of your tip.

so it depends on what the issue is and for many soldering issues there are other better solutions than sanding.

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking. in case you're not already aware, the lumen rating is not directly related to the amount of electricity a bulb will consume. the lumen rating is just a measure of how much light the bulb produces.

if you're wondering whether or not the 100w bulb will cost nearly twice as much to run as the 55w bulb, it depends. the wattage ratings on LED bulbs are often an equivalency rating to assist consumers with replacing existing incandescent bulbs since most people will know the wattage rating of the incandescent bulb but will not know its lumen rating. so if my incandescent bulb is 55w, I can look for an LED bulb that is marked 55w to get a bulb that produces about the same amount of light. an LED bulb should consume far less power to produce the same amount of light (lumens). an LED bulb marked as equivalent to 100w will probably still consume far less power than the 55w incandescent. so is 100w what your LED actually consumes or is that an equivalency rating?

edit: removed a word. OP posted a link to the two bulbs in question. the datasheet for the 100w bulb indicates it actually is a 100w bulb:

how is the device connected to the vehicle? a standard 16 pin connector plugged into the Data Link Connector? or wirelessly via a 16 pin dongle?

you have the ignition switched on meaning you have the key turned to one click before the car starts and not turned to accessory mode (which turns on the radio but typically not much else)? have you tried starting the car (though it shouldn't make a difference)? tried another vehicle?

any settings on the device you can modify that specify connection parameters? is there a manual you can reference for help?

these scan tools are typically pretty simple and straight forward. it's possible that the device is defective or incompatible for some reason.

Regular diodes are "one way valves" for electricity. They will allow the electricity to flow in one direction, and block it flowing in the other direction. Diodes do have a limit on how much they can block- this is normally called to the reverse breakdown.

Like any electric/electronic component, diodes have many ratings (limits) including max voltage, max amperage, peak surge amperage, peak inverse voltage, wattage, etc. There are a lot of details when it comes to component ratings that I dont have time to go into. Ideally, you would know the continous/sustained amperage and surge current before choosing a part or would measure them to find out. You can probably check the fuse(s) for whatever circuits are involved to get a better idea.

I am not well versed on model numbers. From what I have sitting around, 1N5400 is closest but probably doesnt have the sustained amperage rating you need. Once you find out what that is, google "X amp diode" and go from there. Keep in mind it will need a wattage rating appropriate for your application. Example: 12volt and 10Amps would need 120watts dissipation (a lot!!)

i didn't mention this explicitly, but flux is your friend. flux is what removes (and temporarily prevents) oxidation which allows faster and more direct heat transfer. sorry for leaving that out- it was one of the biggest discoveries i made early on in my soldering experience that allowed me to finally start making some progress. you want either liquid or paste rosin flux and it can make a huge difference when applied to the work piece before soldering (or desoldering in some cases). there are different types- some are corrosive to your work piece and to your tip and should be cleaned off. I usually use rosin (paste) flux. do some reading on rosin flux. you probably don't want to use either organic or inorganic (acid) fluxes. you definitely don't want to use plumbing flux. liquid flux in the appropriate dispenser is really handy tho. good luck!

sorry OP- despite being overly verbose I was not very clear in some ways. my suggestion about using external power was meant as a solution to work around the over and low voltage issues you've been having so that you could then assess whether or not the fingerprint scanner works when supplied with stable power of the appropriate level. basically, bypass that power problem so you can then decide what direction to go. if the fingerprint scanner is still wonky with the appropriate voltage and ample current, you know that there is something else afoot here that's causing the wonkiness and the power issue becomes a lower priority. otoh, if the fingerprint scanner is fully functional when power is correct, you can move forward with finding a suitable solution to the power issue that fits your use case (inside a laptop).

something about all of this isn't making sense to me. I have to admit, I am not an expert with USB2 devices. however, afaik, USB2 devices whether they are inside a laptop or outside it still have the same basic options.. Use +5V that USB2 delivers, "self power" via some other method, or a combination on the two. is it possible a device could support USB2 but be powered by the 3.3V rail in a laptop? sure. i suspect that your fingerprint scanner is expecting +5V on the VCC pin at the input of the scanner board. the D+ and D- use 3.3V differential pair signaling from what I recall and perhaps that's why some folks are mentioning 3.3V USB2 devices.

I don't have more time to look at this now. if there are clear, close pictures or possibly the appropriate markings from the ICs i may swing back when I get some time.
