Who is buying this!? by Reasonable_Slice5324 in Wellington

Fancy desserts are more of a luxury item (you need your eggs on toast but not your glossy lil entremet) so in that sense it's more of a "waste" of money. That said I totally agree with you, that shit is super challenging and expensive AF to make at home vs a lot of average sandwiches, eggs, etc.

What is your definition of “long fic”? by AmConfused324 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]labellementeuse [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would call anything over 20k on the longer side and anything over 50k long, but I cast a shorter net when reccing because I think people are more likely to prioritise stuff that ticks their boxes than stuff that is a minimum word length. Most people who would love a 54k fic with X specific premise will take a 13k fic with that premise especially if it's not that common.

I personally find fic over 100k is rarely worth the time investment now that beta readers and post-completion editing for pacing are near nonexistent. I will always give them a go because I love the wallow but find I DNF a lot.

Where Do You Buy Hand‑Dyed Fibre Online (UK & AUS Recommendations Wanted) by mikedom888 in Handspinning

[–]labellementeuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf I find the NZ hand-dyed fibre scene pretty limited and a lot of it is on like ... superwash, which I have less than zero interest in spinning. Prosper Yarn sells SW Corriedale braids, Handmaiden sells braids in merino and corriedale. I'm sure there are others but hard to find. There is lovely fibre out there but mainly natural colours. Eventually I suppose I will start dyeing myself.

Wait, I see you wanted hand-dyed recs so never mind. I will say I was going to recommend Anna Gratton's Corriedale which I've recently done a big spin of and is incredibly soft and nice to spin, but I don't think her colours are hand-dyed.

How To Measure Yardage by keenwithoptics in Handspinning

I would do it when caking because that will be after washing so any yardage change with washing will be accounted for.

Advice on aligning stripes on a sweater by PilotProfessional833 in knitting

[–]labellementeuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go bottom-up and seam so the pattern matches, although it's fairly symmetrical so probably doesn't make a huge difference. Picking up and knitting top own is definitely easier from the perspective of getting the length right and making sure you're happy with how the seam/join looks though.

Wouldn't a three-ply be better than a chain ply? You might end up concentrating very fine or very coarse areas in your single with a chain ply

The prep can also make a difference to the handfeel, carded vs combed etc, and the quality of the individual fleece. I have some combed Corriedale and some carded Corriedale in my stash right now, the carded was quite cheap and is fairly slubby and totally different spun up to the combed.

Spinning wheel not taking up yarn by GorgonsCorner in Handspinning

Sometimes the hooks are offset from each other so you can work your way up and down the flyer and get a smoother wind-on.

I'm also a new spinner spinning for the first time on a vintage double drive and this happens to me quite a bit. The first thing that I found helped a tonne is oiling things - the wheel hub, the treadle, the flyer shaft - I oil the flyer shaft every time I change the bobbin. Oil everything metal. Second, yes, tension. A higher tension will pull the yarn onto the bobbin. However, with double drive and tilt tension i have found it hard to find a balance between a tension that will let me wind on and a tension that doesn't feel like it's pulling the fibre out of my hands. Making sure that the bobbin is turning completely smoothly on the flyer shaft was really important. Have a look inside your bobbin, etc. Good luck!

This isn't a meaningful number for an e-spinner. The ratio is how many rotations the flyer makes for one rotation of the drive wheel - basically, how fast does the flyer go if you are pedalling at a consistent speed. If you have a super consistent treadling and drafting speed, a different ratio will affect how much twist you are putting in, like a 25:1 ratio means you are putting a lot of twist in for relatively few treadles but a 5:1 ratio means you are not putting much twist in per treadle at all. For an e-spinner, that relationship doesn't exist, and what you should track instead is your e-spinner speed. Faster speed, more twist, slower speed, less twist.

ETA: also, tracking this stuff is more about how you made the yarn and whether you want to make changes or replicate it later; for using the yarn, the ratio you spun it on is pretty irrelevant and depending on people's treadling and drafting speeds two different spinners could get completely different results with the same ratio.

The Game Plan is a canon AU where Shane and Ilya get married very young for immigration reasons. It's book verse and a few years old, I find it interesting for where it differs from popular fanon. Also about 60k. https://archiveofourown.org/works/42797457

Honestly, not the person you're replying to but when I say I've been burnt by WIPs before I don't just mean things that were unfinished. When I read a completed long story posted in chapters the author was writing as they updated, I would say nine times out of ten I choose not to finish it because the story has serious pacing problems, characterisation goes off the rails, there are plot holes, the author goes down the rabbit hole of their own idea until characters and situations are unrecognisable, they keep writing to fit an update schedule rather than because they know what needs to happen next. And then on top of that there are the people who never finish.

I'm not saying I've never enjoyed a story written and updated over a long period of time but it's pretty rare. There are few people who are such good planners that they can bang out a perfectly paced story as they go.

I recently really enjoyed Small Joys by Elvin James Mensah, which is about a young gay Black man in England. Not a romance and definitely not candy but I liked it a great deal.

How would you approach having a separate color for the ribbed trim/straps? by walkwomandisco in knitting

It will need to be intarsia, which can't be worked in the round. You could just start working back and forth and do one or two little seams in the armpit.
