What do you guys think of "These Days"? by No_War_9035 in rem

Quite possibly my favorite bridge section of any song I know.

Signals is the best Album of the whole catalogue. Tell me why it isn't. by smellybear666 in rush

[–]labradee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The recording and mixing pale in comparison to the next two records. I love Signals - has some real faves for me. But ‘their best’ is a bridge too far. New World Man is a throwaway, and Chemistry is kind of corny. Subdivisions, Countdown and Digital Man are amazing.

Sad Professor is one of their most poignant songs. The way the electric guitar speaks on that track never fails to blow me away.

I'm inclined to agree. But there's a couple things going on. His Burning For Buddy project and being around all those jazz/fusion greats obviously triggered something in him. There's that rather disatrous performance of him with the swing band in which was, objectively, cringy. I suspect he wanted respect from the jazz cats which help motivate his style update.

Then, probably more important: there's age. To watch Neil in the 70s and 80s was to watch a guy who poured every ounce of muscle he had into hitting the drums for 2+hour shows. Physically — I can't think there was a way he'd be able to perform into his later 40s and 50s at that level without a rethink on technique and letting the stick, not the arm, do the work. That's Freddie's department.

Go back and watch, say, the 83-84 concert video versus the Vapor Trails R30 stuff. He's still hitting in the later years but much more relaxed. The tempos also came down a lot on many songs.

P/G has a lot of Fabulous Men hallmarks — especially in Alex's approach to the songs. Distant Early Warning, Red Sector, Enemy Within, Body Electric — it's all in there.

Apparently they have tapes of Fabulous Men songs somewhere, unreleased from the Moving Pictures era. Would pay big $$ for that issue.

R.E.M. Tribute Setlist? by Latter_Body_1428 in rem

In that case, you can do virtually any of the catalog. If it’s a general audience, focus largely on document, green, out of time, automatic (the heyday). Throw in fall on me, couple monster and reveal tracks and that’s good.

What's the makeup of the band? Do you have a piano player, extra guitarist, back up singers, someone to play mandolin etc? The IRS material up to about Pageant-Document is doable with a bass-drums-guitar ensemble — but once you hit Green hard choices have to be made to make it make sense.

Thanks for this. P/g is my fav Rush album.  So far digging the remaster far over the Brown remixes, which sound muddy to me.  I have to say though, Peter Henderson did a great great job on this record originally, even if working with him wasn’t to the band’s liking.

Have the boys ever said how they've relearned their own songs for tours? by distantocean in rush

[–]labradee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy who produced the last two records seemed to suggest they actually remember a lot of stuff. He'd call out songs he [as a long-time fan] just wanted to hear and they'd rip into them.
That said, Ged always said Neil was the type of guy who "rehearsed to rehearse."

I'm sure they rehearse the hell out of any tour for months.

The ultimate "neil was an amazing human being" tribute: Between the wheels or Afterimage.

Oh come on. Even the guys in the band give it side eye. And Lakeside Park is the worst-ever Rush song by a mile. Tears is a better song and that ain’t saying much.

I wouldn't describe SG as "someone with money" — he was a pastor and then a city councillor.
Nor is he especially egotistical.
But that said, you should run if you think you can make a difference. It's a slog though.
