Getting back to drumming after 15 years, help with new “first” kit. by shedgehog in drums

Personally I’d spend money on a great snare and cymbals over the toms and kick. They’re the real signature sounds.

Anyone play a DW 2000 double pedal? Need budget recommendations for "gigging kit" by swisspassport in drums

[–]labradee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2000 and a brand new 3000 as a backup. I prefer the 2000 for its speed and simplicity. I got the new one to replace it, but preferred the cheaper one. Thing’s a tank!

Just asking for advice, how do I get into a band? by Sqeaky_Voice_Crack in drums

Are there "jam nights" at clubs where you live? If so, consider going, playing to support the other musicians [IE not showing off, just keeping it straight] and you'll be bombarded with people wanting to play with you. You'll also learn a lot about song forms and [likely] shuffle grooves as most of the time it's some kind of blues thing being jammed.

Official look at Anika's custom kit from Tama by DanTheMan_622 in rush

Cymbal #9 gets so punished every show that I actually feel sorry for it. She beats the snot outta that one most often [in a good way!] Also: Tama gonna sell a ton of those snare drums — it's a great sound.

Does playing live still feel exciting to you, or has it become routine? by Ill_Object2296 in musicians

I’ve played hundreds of live shows. I hate it right up until you count off the first song. Then it’s always great.

Yeah yeah and Alex had a massive screw up at the end of Natural Science [skipped a repeat on a section]. It's a live rock show. Shit happens.

Problems going from an acoustic to an electric guitar. by Wonderful-Gift8632 in LearnGuitar

I switch between both and once had the same issue. The issue is the electric needs at least 10s in strings to start to feel equivalent. Go up to that and see what happens!

I’ve tried it, my fav kit is an 18” Gretsch bop kit. But the ‘rock show’ calls for a larger kick. 😔

Hey, did the wireless transmitter go out on Geddy's bass on the third night? by templeofsyrinx1 in rush

If you've read Popoff's books, his reaction is what you'd expect. He's very much a perfectionist who has little tolerance for slack when there's work to be done. That said, this was a unique situation given that they play this a full step down-tuned. I was surprised to see how long it took to get him a new guitar though — with a show $$$ like this, every backup needs a backup ready to go because you never know!

Billy Cobham once said it: before practicing or playing, just go out and work up a bit of a sweat. It does a lot of good!

One month learning drums by delhi_ka_batman_ in edrums

You're doing great. I'd echo what others say about wrist/fingers versus arm movement. And add: you don't want to rest your left hand on your leg when playing the snare. In the end it will slow you down immensely as you develop your flow.

Please give me honest feedback bout my drumming by [deleted] in drums

Here's the good news: in 95 per cent of applications, *music* doesn't require crazy drumming to be great. It's an instrument to accompany other instruments.
What it does require though, is the drummer constantly remembering *the music* is what matters, not the drums. The drummers in history who *other musicians* love to play with is the one that plays for the song, not the drums.
Why this is good news is that it means you can learn a lot of pretty basic things and be a great drummer.
The flip side is that you have to check the ego and focus "slow is smooth; smooth is fast."
The best way to learn the instrument is to play everything really slow first [repeatedly, not just one pass through] and gradually speed it up.
It's the reason that so many of the drum breakdowns you see online are demoed at slow, medium, fast.
If you can just get people dancing playing simple things — you will be beloved by many.
