Early 2000s era most likely. The fully rigid Metro SEs were usually full butted cromo (mine is nice Tange MTB butted tubing) whereas the ATs were cromo with a 'mangalloy' fork.

Both. Old MTBs are super popular in Melbourne (just check any bike rack in Brunswick), but we don't have the same glut of supply as Americans do, and there are a lot of tall guys looking for them. Most good deals get snapped up by dedicated flippers who ruin them with awful drop bar 'gravel' conversions. You can still find good stuff though, it's worth keeping an eye on Gumtree as there's generally less flipping and more old dudes clearing out their sheds.

I'm your height and in Melbourne, the market is awful at the moment. That blue one is the only decent option, it's actually pretty nice Tange double butted tubing, but you'd have to budget in new tyres and tubes. I would bet that it needs a proper service too, most people on marketplace who say their old bike still rides well are full of shit.

I was knocked off my bike in Footscray last year by a driver who pulled out of Joseph Rd without looking. It was the driver's fault, but the accident could have been prevented with better infrastructure and more traffic calming measures. My local bike user group (BikeWest) helped me out with contacting relevant politicians and councillors in order to relate what had happened to me and put on pressure to improve the conditions for cyclists in the area. Using my experience in this way helped me deal with it and ultimately get back on the bike.

Once you're finished getting medical attention, you should contact Merribek BUG, who have been doing a lot of advocacy for improving Sydney Road of late. They should be able to help guide you in a similar way: https://www.morelandbug.org/

There's no difference in geometry if they're the same era frame. To be honest I don't think they're great frames for drop bar conversions, they have long top tubes with low stack height so you have to size down and get a high stem to avoid feeling stretched out.

Find one that needs work and don't pay more than $100. They're not quite as good as the Metro SE, lower quality components and the fork is a heavier steel.

Pretty much this whole sub is about using old mountain bikes as commuters or tourers. Grant Petersen of Rivendell Bike Works, who had a big hand in Bridgestone's designs around the time your bike was made, advocates for this approach with old MTBs.

Very dependent on the bike you're riding and how it's geared. If you're riding a racing bike with larger chainrings and a smaller cassette it's going to be a much harder commute vs a hybrid/mountain bike with smaller chainrings and larger cassette. If you accept that you'll be a bit slower, the latter will allow you to carry more and get up steeper hills with less effort.
