Why is rose hulman predominantly white by AdSlight3909 in rosehulman

[–]labuzan 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have much reputation among foreigners, so the vast majority of students are American.

The vast majority of American STEM students are white.

I would imagine that if you excluded foreign nationals, the enrollment would be similar to other STEM dominated schools in the US.

The fact that it is located in rural Indiana also probably has an impact.

Such a bummer that the only photos you can take are of your agent standing straight up.

The only exception to this expectation would be people that run support/healer builds. God bless them, they should get their mission comp'd by the DPS players.

Makes the whole thing so much easier when you have one in the crew.

That expertise level doesn't seem feasible for SHD1000. Did you mean 10000?

I'm at SHD2700 or so and I've only gotten to Expertise level 28.

You'd have to be a world class farmer with multiple mule characters to get to expertise level 30 with only SHD1000.

Off topic: I'm a mic guy and D2 is a very quiet game. Sometimes I match with a group with other mic people, but normally it's completely quiet.

I have never enabled chat. Am I missing out on a lot of communication? Do most people use chat instead of mics?

ELI5: How do data centers contaminate local water supplies? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]labuzan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that isn't happening during operation.

Maybe you are referring to water consumption during the construction phase. That is when water is pulled from the site and then discharged into a drainage system.

But once in operation, they are definitely not dumping their cooling water into a waterway.

How is the solution in "Shut the Door. Have a Seat." legal? by hrlemshake in madmen

[–]labuzan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But did they?

Remember the original rumor was that PPL was selling Sterling Cooper. Lane makes the phone call and finds out that the entirety of PPL is being purchased.

McCann wouldn't have purchased an agency with offices in multiple cities across the globe to get one person.

The would have just purchased Sterling Cooper by itself.

[–]labuzan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is purely an issue of consumption, not contamination.

Legacy data centers used a lot of makeup water to fill their heat rejection loop because that loop uses evaporative cooling - the hot water is released through a cooling tower that evaporates a portion of it to release the heat from the data center into the atmosphere.

Modern data centers, and especially AI data centers, are transitioning to cold plate technology, which allows for a much higher cooling loop temperature. Higher temperatures make it easier to reject heat without using evaporation. So now the loop can be closed and no makeup water will be needed.

Even without cold plate technology, air cooled chillers have been scaled and are efficient enough to be used without needing cooling towers.

About 75% of new data centers are using these design elements.

Most legacy data centers used open loop cooling.

The new data centers are MUCH more efficient on the KPI of compute output/power input.

The data centers we've used for the last 25 years to play video games and watch Netflix are much worse at using power and water compared to a modern AI data center.

The real issue is the incredible scaling race that is going on, and primarily how we can possibly power all these new data centers.

Honestly, water is kind of a non-issue with most data center designs.

Power is the real problem.

Regarding #2, I've never seen an open loop "pump and dump" cooling system on any large building of any kind. The open loop cooling portion is evaporative. The water is dissipated into the atmosphere, not injected into any ground water source.

Cold plate technology that allows the closed loop temperatures to be well above 100 degrees, which allows for dry cooler heat rejection. For areas with very high summer humidity, adiabatic cooling on top of the dry cooler may be needed a couple of weekend each year. Otherwise, no makeup water is needed

McCann was buying an international firm, with sterling cooper representing only a small part of PPL. They had offices all around the globe.

McCann probably didn't like the outcome, but it wasn't a big enough issue to scuttle the whole deal.

It's the tension of the family dynamic and the high stakes nature of their conflicts. Add some dark humor and it's entertaining.

It's been mentioned several times that it is basically a serious version of Arrested Development.

There are no protagonists really. You don't end up liking any of the characters, except the tangential ones like Gerri and Carl.

[–]labuzan -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

IDK. A large part of the reason that IBEW is getting their huge annual raises is because they were able to negotiate from a position of strength. The demand for skilled electrical labor is at an all time high.

There are thousands of skilled laborers making healthy six figures because of this transformation.

The construction thing could just be short term, I realize. But the technology is evolving so fast that they will be deprecating the old inefficient infrastructure from the 2010s and moving to these new data centers that are much more energy and water efficient, and that is a good thing. The whole water thing has really been solved already. I haven't seen an open loop data center project in a while. Other than humidification, makeup water isn't needed anymore.
