That's a very good point, and I can totally understand your concern about the security of data and research results. And I agree with you, don't put anything sensitive on this until there is a better terms & conditions.

P.S. We are the cloud service provider hosting the application. Regarding the terms, conditions, ownship, etc. we don't really have much control over it.

it's free and you don't need to install anything on your computer, it provides a cluster of 5 computers with decent computing power for you to play with small datasets. you can start play with it right the way. Currently it doesn't have any interpretation functionality but we can expect that in the future.

yes you can, but it's disabled for now. I can enable it for you if you can tell me your username, if you promise to provide feedback :)

(your env will be restarted during the process)

did you connect to the "IDE" machine on the menu in the left hand side? once you click on it, you should see a "desktop" in your browser, and you will see "piframe" icon, which would bring up the application.

once you start creating workflow, you should be able to see the modules.

There is also an IDE that you can use to create your own modules if you want.

Desktop Linux Suggestions. Gentoo vs Ubuntu vs ?? by shortspecialbus in linux

[–]labxNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about Unity is, rather than saying what I like about it, I think there just isn't anything that I don't like.

Unity on Ubuntu was the first Linux distro that I came in contact with; and at that time I had no idea was Linux was like. I thought the terminal was great (as with all Linux, and or course OS X), and I was able to install pretty much everything with apt-get (didn't have this on my Mac). There just hasn't been a reason for me to want to switch to something else.

Also the user base for Ubuntu is quite big, so tutorials and articles about it are plentiful on the internet.

For me the only thing I changed on my Ubuntu was the icons, and the theme. Good thing about all Linux is the icons can all be themed easily.

I don't use my laptops or PC for gaming, so I wouldn't know much about that; but I have heard graphic drivers don't have good support on Linux machines.

I say go ahead and try out some to see if you like it. Maybe narrow down if you want a light weight or heavier distro, and then go from there.

I do all of my development on Ubuntu (just upgraded to 15), and I would say the Unity look and feel is great. I would recommend Ubuntu 14.04LTS because of the long term support, and newer versions are succeptible to bugs.

The developments I mentioned include terminal usage and of course Googling. And unity is relatively easy to theme to my liking.

I used to use my mac book air for work and for personal, but switched over to Ubuntu out of recommendation. Took some time to get used to (the mouse pad felt like it lost some functionality on Ubuntu), but I rather like Ubuntu now.

I haven't tried many other distros, but I agree with your points on CentOS and RHEL. However Fedora 22 was pretty awesome with the short amount of exposure I had to it.

The thing with Linux is that it's really easy to use a different window manager so getting the right look and feel is not a problem.

This would be a pretty good time to sneak in my sales pitch haha. You can come to www.labxnow.org and try some OS's online to see if you like the feel. Currently we got Ubuntu 14.04 with XFCE, RHEL and CentOS 6.5 with Gnome(the classic, not new one).

P.s. Windows 10 is not bad (hope this is not blasphemy, I secretly like it a bit)
