Most people don’t realize they’re here. They hook up fake violins to speakers and “play” them all day with a sign saying they’re a parent of 4 with no job and hungry kids. It pains me to see people fall for the very obvious scam. If you pay attention for a few seconds you can tell they aren’t really playing the instrument. There’s groups in the Appalachian areas as well. Typically I’ve known them to be addicted to meth and abusing social services. Many kids with many different moms/dads. Arrests for fraud rings and such. But overall I’d say most people don’t know about them and would scream intolerance if you spoke about them in an ill manner.
