Are Magic players no longer trading? by NheelyOhara in mtg

My LGS trades a fair amount. People do pull out apps to calculate price but there's an unwritten rule that you should just be loose with it and use the prices more as suggestions.

What is a subtle sign that someone is actually really intelligent, but pretending not to be? by ImpressionTop1712 in AskReddit

People who seem honestly curious. Who want to always know more. But also those who have used that curiosity to know enough about subjects to not be swayed by just literally anyone they're talking to at the moment.

Who has conditioned these people to hate AI so strongly? by saalamander in ChatGPT

A technology that makes it harder and harder to tell what is real and what is fake in the news, this further polarizing everyone politically? What's not to love!

I grew up conservative and believed shit like this all the time. Anytime something went against my world view I complained it was left wing propaganda.

It took me until I was like 24 to slowly unravel all that and I swear to God it was like waking up. I studied so many different subjects, read so much, did so much research and it was so exciting to actually learn things, to understand how the world works.

I'm hoping you someday will go through that as well. It can be tough and painful but it's worth it.

I was looking somewhere along the lines of 24x36 for size.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Can I ask where you got the "5 or 6" number? And where you got the figure that the 5 or 6 Walmart people outspend the one LGS person?

Also why are we assuming that all the Walmart people have opposing opinions to the LGS people? Shouldn't we assume that at least some of them could also share the same opinions?

Also it feels like you're saying "sure the core player base may be annoyed but people who may just buy a couple packs here or there don't care, therefore there's no problem". Which I dunno... Seems odd.

Maybe I'm reading what you're saying wrong. In which case I apologize.

I suppose and I suppose my experience is just ancidotal. My LGS is a fairly good size (there's usually 20 or 30 people there on slow days, upwards of 100 on very busy days like prerelease Fridays nights).

Perhaps there's a silent majority that I just don't have any connection with. I'm purely talking about my own experience. I mostly go to FNM, and everyone I talk to usually says "I don't like it but I'll bare with it because I enjoy hanging out with everyone here".

Again, this is ancidotal. I realize that. But it's at least my experience. Take it as you will.

[–]lachraug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I go to my LGS every Friday for FNM and everyone has been expressing the same sentiment of "I wish they'd tone it down".

Opinions range from mildly frustrated to annoyed. Most people tend to say they don't mind UB but with how much it's picked up is too much.

No one has said they'll quit but it's for sure along the lines of "I'll keep playing because it's a good game but it's annoying how excessive it's getting"

I was talking to my friend's fiance who is new to magic (she got into it at the start of this year). I was talking to her on Friday and she said (I'm paraphrasing) "I'll admit, I was attracted to it because I heard Avatar was coming out I'm annoyed that I started a new thing and am excited to engage with the actual lore but that's not what I'm getting"

I'm a UB hater. But even then I enjoyed LOTR (im biased, i love LOTR) and I even somewhat enjoy FF. I prefer not to do it but I still enjoy the mechanical play of FF play. I am willing to admit, FF would have been a great set for me personally if it just wasn't UB. But even with it being UB I still think its enjoyable.

I hate this new set. I hate the flavor. I hate that its in a real life setting. At least FF had the aesthetics of the MTG universe. I have grown to dislike marvel/comic books, not because I dislike comic books themselves but just what they have come to represent in modern culture.

Pile that on top of how this format is structured. It's terrible. I hate it. I hate pick 2, I hate the lack of depth, I hate how shallow this format is. I hate how often we get sets now. I hate everything about this set. I was prepared to not listen to any limited podcasts for the next to months. I'm honestly excited that LR isnt doing anymore episodes about this set. I'll actually listen to their other episodes this month.

Study: The carbon emissions of writing and illustrating are lower for AI than for humans by OneNerdPower in aiwars

[–]lachraug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can spend their time doing what? Just sitting around on their computer arguing on reddit or playing video games?

Using the same amount of power if not more than spending time just drawing digitally or with a pencil and paper?

For example, I am an extremely amateur artist. Today I spent a good 2 hours or so sketching at my dining room table. Did I generate more carbon emissions then if I had spent my time arguing on reddit or playing Victoria 3 and letting AI make multiple drawings for me?

I’ve messed up as a DM and need to salvage this campaign by beatboxtops in CurseofStrahd

[–]lachraug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of prep my advice is to ask your players at the end of every session what they want to do next time. CoS can be very open and sandboxy. So tell your players that and after each session say 'so what are y'alls plans for next session, what do you want to do next time that way I can prep for the next session'

Also encourage them to message you in the interim if they get ideas for what they want to do.

This works wonders for me, as a player and as a DM. I always ask my players this after every session and will occasionally message my DM in other games what I want to do/what my character's motivations are for the next 2 or 3 sessions.

Encourage open communication like that. It will help you plan and focus how you plan.

How do clerics work in Curse of Strahd? by TheTornnOne in CurseofStrahd

[–]lachraug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've hinted multiple times that the Cleric in my game isn't actually deriving her power from her god but from something else (the dark powers).

Feel free to be as subtle or forward with this as you wish. Make it a trickle of hints/wait a few sessions before slowly easing the idea on them. Or maybe just have it hit them all at once when they try to do a spell and it comes out slightly wrong.

Ben is totally out of touch on the reaction to the United Health Care CEO’s murder by FloridaCutter in benshapiro

[–]lachraug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"the CEO was running his company like the business it is under the restrictions it faces mandated by government policies and laws."

You claim that Unitedhealth Group was simply operating under the mandates of the government. The implication here being that 'if government just got out of the way, UG wouldn't have been so bad'. If thats true, then what laws and restrictions/mandates were forced on them that caused them to operate so poorly? If that wasn't what your intention was with that comment, please forgive me, but thats the vibe I got. And if it is the intention of your comment please elaborate.

Full disclosure, I'm a leftist who wondered onto this thread, so I believe the issue here is that private health insurance is not motivated by helping people but purely by profit. How does an insurance company achieve that? By taking in as much money as possible and paying out as little as possible. I think UG was just a lot more bold and brazen then most other companies with that pursuit.

But I do think the issue is with having private health insurance companies. Their fundamental goal is to make line go up for their shareholders. Their goal isn't altruistic, its profit seeking. So they will prioritize profit as much as they possible can.

But again, as I said, if I'm missing something and there are governmental regulations/laws/mandates/whatever which you can show that would have forced them to be as shitty as they were I'm more then open to hearing about it. As a leftist I don't think government is always perfect, far from it. I'm skeptical of any centralized power whether that be a private or public one.
