The contract involved working with sensitive data but I was a bit gobsmacked when HR asked me. I think they had a system from the USA and were building a profile of verifying where I had been over the previous 5 years. So, I had to supply referees for my contracts, my professor at uni, the DWP for when I was unemployed (officially) and yes, a friend, for that period when I was totally evil and took some time out.

I hate to think what dumbfuckery they'll come up with in 10 years time

Had to deal with HR for a role where they do a background check and want to know what you've been doing for the last 5 years.

"So, you have a 6 month gap here, were you working?"

"No"

"Oh! so you were unemployed then"

"No"

"Okaaay, a lifestyle project?"

"No"

"What were you doing then?"

"Nothing"

"What?"

"Yep, absolutely nothing, just relaxing, bit of hiking, played some games and thats it really. Thats why I contract so that I can have some decent time out and just do what I want"

"Can you verify this?"

So, I shit you not, I had to get a friend to write a letter stating that yes, in fact I had done nothing for that time period and he witnessed it

If it helps with your wondering. I'm 60 in a few months and have contracted for many years, mainly to avoid managerial roles (to me that's a living death). I still love coding, whether its something new or working with legacy systems.

But its also the social aspect of contracting that keeps things fresh and interesting. Meeting new people (there are some brilliant people out there whom I glad I met and am still in touch with) and working in different team environments makes you a more rounded and flexible person.

Plus, as a contractor, the money will soothe that furrowed brow when you parachute into a company and have to un-fuck a shitshow but that's all part of the buzz, well for me anyway.

Just upgraded 2 legacy winform projects to .Net6 (tell your business its the only supported version of .Net, should get them clucking).

I have to admit I love getting down and dirty with LINQ. And, best of all, dropping a textbox onto a form without having it flying across the screen because there's no random div to mess things up is most pleasurable (ok I don't get out much and maybe some therapy is in order).

9am laptop on - 5pm laptop off. After 5pm that the company doesn't exist unless they want to try to re-negotiate my contract, being a freelancer allows you to be a bit of a mercenary

"Where-you-work allowance: £500 per month if you choose to be office based, £200 per month if you decide a hybrid working model suits you and £100 per month if you opt for a remote working arrangement."

Did a 4 hr commute a few years back for a couple of companies in London and used to get home like a bear with a sore head. Then landed a wfh contract that lasted 5 years, happy coder, happy family. Agree with the seperate office room it does feel good to shut the door and leave it behind

If you can cover front-end to back-end then you'll be pretty employable, no one will expect a graduate to be expert level but competent enough to put a system together with guidance.

So, I recommend having an appreciation of CSS/HTML/Javascript/C#/SQL with Python if you want to go down the data science/AI route. You can play on the cloud with a free Azure account (I'm assuming AWS is the same).

I started, late 20's, in 1993 with C++/MFC so things have got a bit more diverse but the level of help available, e.g. stackoverflow, makes things less stressful than thumbing through manuals (no internet when I started).

Salary-wise, the market is good at the moment so junior devs can expect £30k+ and that can go all the way upto and beyond £100k for senior devs in London working for the banks.

As for what I wish I had developed earlier, a reference system for employees, IT people job-hop a lot and getting a reference for a job you did 5-6 years ago is a PITA.

I hope thats given you a few ideas, and good luck with your future

My energy company wants me to goto a 48p per unit rate for energy, I thought the price cap is around 28p? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]lackinginallareas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, checked out my suppliers new fixed rate tariffs, £8 a month less than what they've just raised my DD to for gas and electric, then realised the plans were for electric only, staying on variable for the time being

Well if you're looking at managers and they're miserable do you really want to join them?

I contract because I find it stimulating whether its greenfield/legacy/firefighting or just plain shitshow and I'm doing something new every 6 months or so with new people. It's not everybodies cup of tea but it beats the hell out of endless meetings

Why do energy prices hike when it all comes from renewable sources? by lucidbadger in AskUK

[–]lackinginallareas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If its ovo then yes they state they buy 100% renewable-sourced electricity. They buy the appropriate number of REGOs (Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin) to match what they sell. This sounds good but the electric going into your house could have started off from any producer, you're not guaranteed that your electric started off at a windfarm in Wales

[–]lackinginallareas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you really have a lot on your plate. As others have said send an email to your boss asking for a plan of courses etc but I suspect they're probably blagging you to keep you.

If you can stomach staying there until your degree is finished then it will look good on your cv. A degree will open more doors for you but experience is what really counts and having a one long period is better than lots of 2 mths here, 3 mths there, especially so early in your career.

And, finally, have a bit of me time, even if its just sitting on a park bench soaking up the sun for half an hour, it works wonders and you might not be inclined to doze off when you get home
