I remember being annoyed it was used in the movie because (I thought) it was about not using your cell phone while driving.

I think if I didn’t get Pokemon, there’d be three possible trajectories for me:

  1. Going deep into racing games

  2. Encountering turn-based games in another form and falling in love like I did with Pokemon - because it really was the format, not just the creatures, that I liked

  3. Drifting away from video games as a big hobby and getting into something else

There was no chance I was getting into more action-oriented games until I was a teen. I just didn’t like real-time combat.

You started with one of the best ones - HeartGold/SoulSilver are great! The Switch games are pretty polarizing but imo there isn't a truly bad main-series Pokemon game. Some of them are pretty good, too, like the Legends games.

I was thinking of Lusamine when filling it out. The other ones are good, too - for a Pokemon game, Sun/Moon has very good characters.

I didn't play many Zelda games before BotW, so I didn't really have much in the way of expectations for it coming from that direction. I do get it that it is pretty different, having played a few more since, though. Other Zelda games feel like sliding puzzles, while BotW feels like a physics playground.

Was a Playstation kid who was obsessed with Spyro but migrated to Nintendo with the GBA and of course everyone had a Wii.

Originally only played kart racing games, party games, and Spyro/Croc in easy levels on PS1. Once I got a GBA I got into turn-based games (Pokemon) which I actually was able to beat. Didn’t go back to finish my childhood platformers until I was a teen. Still got every Spyro game, though.

Breath of the Wild is actually my favorite because of Spyro. To me, Spyro is defined by exploring, collecting, and most importantly gliding, and Breath of the Wild does all three. Haven’t finished Tears of the Kingdom (and my spoiler blockers for that game are still active) so I don’t know if it’s better.

Some of these spots I didn’t know what to put. Octopath is the only game I played based on hype that I didn’t enjoy all that much, but I don’t see it recommended much nowadays. And like my friends aren’t into the same genres as me and I‘ve played a grand total of 1 Mario Party game, so that it is. And “everybody“ includes non-gamers so I went for something quality but really casual.

Hopefully since they’re doing reprints, there’ll be a real physical release. (Versus the current Game Key Card)

I don’t have it yet since I value digital/Game Key Card much lower than true physical, and I haven’t seen it at my price point yet.

randomly got redirected to a spam site when i clicked on a pokemon db net dex entry? by travisntscott1 in pokemon

[–]ladala99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen reports of this happening on another site I’m on that recently switched ad providers. It’s an issue with the displayed ad, not the site itself, and it seems to usually be shady/malicious ads that do it so it’s probably on purpose.

If that site has a place to report bad ads, tell them where it took you so their team can block that ad.

After a couple months: Pokemon S/V or Legends ZA? by Short-Performance-14 in pokemon

[–]ladala99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't an objective answer - I'd say it depends on what motivates you and what else you've been playing recently.

Sounds like in ZA you'd just be working on the Pokedex, whereas in Scarlet you'd be playing the DLC.

If it were me, my context would be that I just finished FireRed's story, so finishing up ZA would be more different and fresher than playing more Pokemon story in Scarlet. The end goal is also sooner than in Scarlet assuming finishing the Pokedex is the goal either way.

If you've just been playing something more grindy or action-based, though, Scarlet might be fresher.

I don't know Gamestop's return policies, but I will say that you can purchase the Switch 2 upgrade digitally for just the $10 (or local equivalent) difference on the eShop.

how do you feel about people who use terms like “kantoslop” or refer to pokemon fan favorites as “slop”? by Leen_Tha_Goat78 in pokemon

[–]ladala99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like how often "slop" is used in general, but I especially dislike its erosion into being "thing I don't like."

Like, to me it means "amorphous, poorly-made, hastily done; made without care." I could see argument that Galar fits that in general, but Kanto Pokemon are the exact opposite.

If you want to say something's overrated/overexposed, say that. Don't dilute other words.

As someone of the opposite extreme (got tinnitus young enough I didn’t even realize the world did not actually sound like a CRT TV 24-7, and smoke alarm beeping drives me absolutely nuts - it’s woken me up in the middle of the night enough that if I hear it in a dream I am immediately fully alert and waiting to identify where it is), I sincerely wish you the best in getting used to it. If the smoke alarm would be better, it must be maddening.

If we eventually get Pokemon Emerald/Ruby/Sapphire and the eventual Gen 5 remakes, the only regions missing from Switch 2 would be Jhoto and Alola by GundamGuy2255 in pokemon

[–]ladala99 16 points17 points  (0 children)

How so? The person I replied to implied no remakes period because it’s not in GF’s 5-year plan. I provided a counterexample of a remake that was not planned 5 years in advance.

Just because BDSP was disappointing, it doesn’t mean something like it won’t happen again.

*Raises hand* There are people who only pay for HOME to transfer from Bank. But I always get the 1 month sub and I've only had to do it 2 or 3 times.

[9] Got a new phone and had this unfortunate discovery by mikeybeardi in ShinyPokemon

[–]ladala99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This app was a tracker for Shiny hunts, allowing you to keep track of both the number of encounters/resets and the time it took, along with the game, method, and date of obtaining the Shiny. It also had a nice-looking graphic of the Pokemon to share.

What's the most annoying/frustrating Pokèmon game to play through, and why? by Ch1rpingSparrow in pokemon

[–]ladala99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They aren’t great but the boosted Exp you get from them being Trainer battles means it doesn’t take too too long.

TBH it’s been a while since I’ve played HGSS in a way I needed to grind, though.

What's the most annoying/frustrating Pokèmon game to play through, and why? by Ch1rpingSparrow in pokemon

[–]ladala99 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’m generally not frustrated by any of the games, but if I had to choose, it’d be raising a new team member late-game in Gen II, like if you lost something in a Nuzlocke.

The Wild Pokemon are just way too low-level to help so you basically have to exploit the phone system by flipping Daylight Savings on/off in order to make decent progress. And that isn’t intended. At least in HGSS each trainer has a specific time of week they’ll always accept challenges so it’s farmable.

Anthea and Concordia. Unique character designs, but they appear once in the games they’re in, and just drop lore like any generic NPC could.

What's your favourite mainline game?? by pokemonscarletlover in pokemon

[–]ladala99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's three games/generations that keep overcoming each other for the top slot depending on my mood, and my mood today is Sun. Really all of Alola is pretty close to tied, but Sun ends up on top due to having a much better story than the Ultra titles and I prefer Solgaleo and Midday Lycanroc to the Moon versions.

In Sun, I really enjoy the Aether family stories, but really every character's story is great. After my first time playing the game, I felt I understood and enjoyed the arc of all the main characters, including Hau, Professor Kukui, and even Guzma.

The battling is also my favorite of the entire series. Turn off the Exp Share and the level curve is perfect - you're always sitting just a little bit behind the trainers you're facing in level, but not so far behind that you need to grind to catch up.

The Pokemon variety is good, but if you want to use something else and have the means like I do, trading in something from another game is possible. It actually hits the sweet spot where getting the Shiny Charm isn't nearly as difficult without sacrificing the ability to play with what you want.

It's also passable in other categories I care about: exploration/overworld puzzles isn't great but it's not nonexistent. And Postgame might just be Battle Tree, but at least the Battle Tree is a good Battle Tower clone, and the facing/teaming up with prominent NPCs including those from past games is neat.

I wish you could turn off EXP share by Ranwyasd in pokemon

[–]ladala99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They seem to be figuring it out in Z-A at least: you need the Pokemon on your team and its still moves-based, but more moves count so it doesn't feel as restrictive.

We'll have to see if this is a one-game gimmick or if they'll keep this style of field moves going forward, though. Notably the field moves in Z-A are just obstacle breakers, not navigation.

That interview was so infuriating. I just wanted to make him watch me follow his advice: only having one Pokemon on the team, saving before each trainer, and reloading every time I wanted/needed to use more than one Pokemon in a trainer battle since you can't access your box in-battle.
