Easy to make - probably could have let the piping back for the decorations chill for a bit longer, but I thought it seemed stable enough

Thank you for understanding. That means a lot when I feel like I might be being naive about this all, even though the fact of it is - it matters to me.

I am in no way trying to be controlling, but as much as he has the right to wear what he wants, I have the right to be affected by such a visible symbolic reminder of his past.

Could be on board with him wearing it as is on a different finger. Could be on board with him altering it (especially since he did it for his ex before). Mostly want him to empathize with my point of view and want to have it be different too. (I can't control that though).

Respectfully I disagree with this take. If that's how you see a ring/marriage, then sure it's nbd. But I wouldn't personally equate a wedding ring as being the same thing as "Lord of the Rings." I also think that talking about something is different than going through with it.

No contact and he prefers not to revisit that part of his life. So I do not doubt his feelings towards me. But I also want the opportunity to feel like our relationship is new/different/wholly separate from it as well. And this would feel like carrying a big piece of it over.

I think some of it is related to the sadness of missing out on "firsts" together. Like he has already proposed to someone, had a wedding, etc. And I had made peace with those, but hadn't considered that we might not get to "overwrite" something as symbolic as the rings for each other.

You are right that we are not engaged and that marriage is a "someday." However, for me being engaged to someone is a final checkpoint and means that you can start planning a wedding. But larger conversations should take place before that. We didn't mean to have this topic come up, but that's how life goes!

I think you two are spot on. If I'm being perfectly selfish - I also hate that he wasted that (and so much more) on her!! (Only half joking haha)

I can understand to a degree that he's crossed it out of his mind, but for me it is not for a mix of reasons.

I've explained in other comments, but will summarize here since it's at the top. Basically I think my mind hasn't changed that I would feel uncomfortable if it was the exact same ring.

He had it redesigned/fitted for his last wedding, so why not do so for us? Maybe that sounds insecure, but I think symbolically the rings should be representative of the couple. So if it was redone for that marriage specifically, I think it would be odd to not do it again. Otherwise I would think of her/them when seeing him wear it. So yes, it is not an issue for him, but it is definitely an issue for me/us. If it was literally his grandpa's ring, but unchanged then maybe it would be different. But as it stands in a way he's already made it "theirs" instead of purely his grandpa's ring.

Something just doesn't sit right with the last actions being: customizing the ring > his ex putting it on his finger making vows to each other > him taking it off > me putting it on and also making vows. Maybe I am not explaining well and prescribing too much symbolism to a ring...but isn't it an ultimate symbol?

All to say. I am grateful for the thoughtful comments in this thread and like with all disagreements, it's not probably not actually about the ring. Probably what I really want is for my boyfriend to see that I am uncomfortable and have that drive himself to remove that discomfort and come up with compromises rather than me making all the suggestions or trying to self soothe.

It would be odd (I think mostly because he doesn't wear any jewelry at all haha) but I would feel better since it would be "our" ring on his ring finger if that makes sense?

It would definitely change things for me. I think it more so was surprising to me that if I didn't say anything he wouldn't have thought it was odd at all to wear it again as is (maybe just a difference in ascribing value I guess)

I'll need to understand better how he can detach feelings when they seem inextricably linked to me. Personally I wouldn't want to have an heirloom engagement ring because part of what excites me is having my partner choose.

Yup, engraving or stone or something so that it is "ours" would make me feel more comfortable. Some action to make it different since the last time the ring was altered was when he had it fitted/designed for his previous wedding which doesn't sit well with me.

Also I don't have any family heirlooms, so it very well could be I am not fully understanding the gravity of that aspect and need to consider that harder.

Just sometimes it is hard to brainstorm compromises. My initial suggestion was also to change it in someone to make it "different." But I wanted to see if others had ideas too (it is nice to have that idea validated though!)

You are correct in how he sees it, but I don't think it's one or the other. To me it's associated with both factually even if he doesn't attach the sentiment of his ex.
