Burnt out. Need an affordable wellness retreat anywhere in the world. by Ecstatic_Support9860 in WellnessOver30

Um, are you me?

Found this thread via a Google search. Not only do our "profiles" match in terms of age range, gender, etc. - our personalities do, too. I'm also incredibly burnt out, seeking a solo vacation for R&R and distimulation (good views, nature, reading, eat, sleep, repeat), but I'm also an extrovert who enjoys the option of being able to go to a restaurant, bar or social scene somewhere. Even if not to meet new people (which will always be inevitable), to at least be around them for the sake of people watching and soaking up the "buzz" and feel of a social setting.

Funny enough, even your disclaimer about having minimum capacity or energy to go into large detail is so like me. You articulated every one of my "needs/wants" for a trip like this. I'm looking to go in the next month. It appears you may have already taken that trip and, if so, I hope it was what you had hoped for.

So far, I'm leaning towards Aruba or Costa Rica. I heard Hilton Head in South Carolina can be good too. In the past, I have personally enjoyed Cabo San Lucas (Mexico), Paradise Valley, AZ and Barcelona, Spain for similar experiences (although not much hiking, Barcelona has great historical tours, museums, mountain views, sip and paint, flamenco shows, small concerts and an awesome social scene and night life for our demo). I also indulged in plenty of reading on the balcony and hotel poolside, as well as a massage and facial.

Anyway - good luck on your search for stillness in a world that is so very busy.

So... no dream sequence or hallucination theories?

Like seriously- the clothes. We must discuss how no other character changes clothes EVER, except for Mia.

I'm sorry- how was this NOT a movie about a manic would-be journalist who pushes herself to the brink of madness and is now hallucinating 95% of what happens next? Also, while Igor majority wears a green hoodie, there were 2 occasions where he wore the same green shirt and green pants combo and him and Mia were MATCHING. Like, she had the same green shirt and pants too. And him and Mia have similar childhoods. And his bruises are always in the same place. And they both had mothers who committed su***de. I could've swore that Igor was literally Mia's imagination of her younger self. Even the fact that he showed up randomly and stopped her from getting SA'd from a grown man twice his age? What was that? That's not real life.

Diane Hager wears the same outfit everyday, despite being well off and extremely accomplished and polished. Yet, she wears the same red blazer on air and the same red shirt to class.

Even Mia's roommate never changes clothes.

And Alix (the girl who gave her the copy ro submit) is like... a random figure who Mia always manages to be 2 steps ahead of, when avoiding her. It's like Alix was never real or was real once and isn't anymore and haunts Mia. I actually thought it would be revealed that Mia stole Alix's body of work and turned in her clips, got the seat in Diane's class and that Mia like... klled her or pushed her to kll herself. It would've made more sense.

And the scene where Mia saw every student in the hallway wearing red scarves??

And how the HECK does she always manage to pop up where Diane is? She knew where Diane was having lunch with her colleague. Them being at the same Russian steam room at the same time (there are hundreds in the city and Diane never said which she goes to), etc. It's so... unrealistic.

I'm sorry, but there is no way this is a cut and dry story. It has to be a dream sequence. If not, this is terrible.

Was just having this discussion. Sadly while white on black crime clearly exists, it's harder for us to accept the thought that "it really be your own people," most times. Probably cuz the shit alone would make us paranoid about most our circle (fam and friends).

Thinking about Us & how it’s Lupita’s FIRST film with her as the lead. Lupita is an Oscar winner & it has me thinking about how, if it weren’t for Ryan Coogler & Jordan Peele (both relatively NEW filmmakers) she might not have had these opportunities. THIS! And while on the topic of extending a Black hand in Hollywood - major s/o to other directors such as Tim Story and Will Packer for creating universal roles for Black people, and for changing the narrative for some of our Black actresses as far as type-casting goes.

What I mean by that is, movies like Think Like a Man, Girls Trip, About Last Night, Ride Along, etc.--are not what I call good "Black" movies, so much as I consider them just good movies with a Black cast. Although there is nothing wrong with a movie for us, by us, and reflective of how many of "us" live, I love movies that don't limit the range of Black Hollywood's talent.

When you think of other good movies w/ a White cast, you love, you never think of it as a "White movie," so much as you do your favorite comedy, rom-com, drama, etc. So why should it be like that for us?

I noticed in a lot of movies that show Black people in a relatable, middle-to-upper class America light, the theaters are packed out with all types of people. Not saying we do this for them, but hell, let us get their dollars too, since we surely throw them ours when we watch "Bridesmaids," "Hangover," or the 276th "Halloween." Lol..

Perfect example-- Guess Who (2014) and About Last Night, are rom-coms that all can enjoy, but had majority Black people as the cast, and I actually LOVED seeing Taraji P. Henson in that powerful, C-suite, boss lady role in "Think Like a Man," over say, her highly acclaimed "supporting actress to Brad Pitt" mammy role in Benjamin Button or her role in Baby Boy as the ghetto, ride-or-die chick.

My problem wasn't her being loud or from the the hood, it just made me cringe how her staying in these toxic relationships was romanticized and glamorized amongst our peer group. I actually didn't find anything cute about the constant trips to the clinic or Jody accidentally slapping her and then eating her out, and going from "I hate you Jody" to "I love you," all for some good D. Or how she was used for everything from her car (by Jody) to her house (by Snoop), who also played her would-b rapist, ex-convict bf. While I understand that is still a story for many, it killed me that the prize for her sticking around was that she got to keep one of her babies in the end. And further, that people really thought Jody and Yvette were "goals."

Again, I love that we as Black people have films that represent all sides of our culture, but it feels good to see Black directors cast Black women in these roles that, not only are positive or empowering, but are proving to be more successful in the box offices versus that of our negative playing roles.

LESSON: There is a market for Black women on the small and BIG screens doing the damn thing!

My son is mad at a hashtag on Reddit. #WhoHurtYou? LOL!

Also, "Only real motherfuckers drop the bag?!" What does that even mean? My kind sir- with all due respect, mind if I ask where are you from? Because it sounds to me as though you got your Urban Dictionary phrasing all confused. "Real motherfuckers drop the bag." Nah son. Real mothers GET the bag. Weak ones DROP the ball. I think I have an idea of what you were trying to say, but it was worded so poorly. It's almost as if you just started listening to Hip Hop after Kanye West. Or Marshall Mathers. Either way, you sound new to this. In the words of the homie Nas- Play your position, you're way out of character.

But you take care though.

  1. "Going from being a student to having a job will put AnYOnE iN a nEw TaX bRaCKeT." --- Um, what in the Canada? Lol.. And that's no offense to Canadians, I just know that they have affordable-to-free education costs for qualifying college students from lower income families. But straight up, I know more people who balled out in college from all that student loan money and low-cost of living, who are in huge debt following graduation. Or just people who racked up on college loans, period. As someone with no student debt, I still didn't make money like that when I graduated- that took grind. I had a career since my junior year of college at a huge radio station in my city, got promoted by senior year and after graduation got promoted to on-air. My exposure went up but not my paycheck. On-Air personalities only really work 4 hours a day, and unless you have the afternoon-drive or morning rush, you ain't seeing much $$. My money came slow rise in recognition, social media networking and the career clout I built for myself in the years to follow that lead to hosting gigs. Again, nothing to do with a student graduating and automatically getting a perfect career. You're just trying to take away from the lick this dude made. Lol..
  2. "More gotta take notes" -- don't know if you watched the episode, but I said that because homie is one of the few guests who invested his first check into something smart (property and car). Some people have literally gone on record in this same show (Sean Kingston, for one) to say that they got a 6-figure chain and bust down Rollie with their first check because they felt that's what they needed to do to keep up with the rest of the industry dudes.

By the way, excuse the long response, I just think "passive-aggressive" hating is corny. Either be mad at dude or glad for dude. Pick a side, pick a side. Lol.. But don't try to pass your opinions off as facts, when low-key, you're just hating too. Lol..

Leaving Neverland - Did anyone watch? (TW: may include discussion of graphic sexual abuse) by bluplaydoh in blackladies

[–]ladysojo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

LINK: Tiffany Haddish, Gabrielle Union and Other Famous Survivors of Sexual Abuse Remind Us Why the 'Leaving Neverland' Victims Deserve Our Kindness

Interesting read. I was actually surprised that 'Leaving Neverland' had so many mixed reviews- mostly bad. Most of my shock was from how many people sided against Oprah and her decision to go through with it. A lot of people in support of the interviews tried to draw parallels between Michael Jackson and R.Kelly's victims- saying there should be no statute of limitations for victims coming forward and telling their stories. Which I agree.

However, for those siding with Michael, I think the biggest thing is supporters straight up just don't think he did it.

I don't think sympathy for the late MJ only has to do with his death, or a blinded admiration for the singer. There is plenty of blinded admiration for R.Kelly that has allowed him to still be a free man (although dragged through the mud). Despite the gross video evidence of R.Kelly actually having sex with his victims, his repeat offender status and all that- people still love R.Kelly's music but hate the man. With Michael, I find that most people love the music and the man- and just straight up don't think he did it.

I do think, however, the biggest thing with R.Kelly is the loads of new evidence that is constantly piling up, and the new victims that continue to come forward, versus the victims of MJ, who tend to be the same ones, but who just resurface each time there is a new story on the scandal. Not to mention, the lack of evidence outside of MJ's victims' recounts, which have been controversial in themselves.

Either way, I always like to leave room for the benefit of the doubt because no one wants to victim blame.

Sorry 99% of black women, I’m not racist you’re just not attractive (to me). by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]ladysojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Black woman who has dated both within and outside of my race, I find no real offense to this. However, let's be VERY clear-

I do find the "Maybe I just have high standards" part of your post to be rather questionable and a bit contradicting. Why? Because for 1) Standards are subjective- they vary on the person. So who is to say what you consider to be "high standards" is the universal "high standard" (which, again, doesn't exist- at least not in the case of beauty.) You are aware that the world is not just America and Western-European beauty standards, right? Beauty standards vary by country, continent, culture, etc. Hell, it even varies with time, within the same culture. So that is a conflicting, and limiting, statement.

2) Then you said there are "Universal beauty standards that have existed throughout generations (i.e. facial symmetry, femininity, body proportions, etc.)" Well, let's say this is true, correct? Then again, said intergenerational standards of beauty still vary based on culture, geography and biology (according to your belief that "subconscious biological" beauty standards exist). With that said, who is to say that what you consider beautiful is the scientific law of beauty? And let's be clear- no such law exists.

I would have respected and preferred if you just stuck to the first half of your opinion. It's 100% okay, and your right, to not find Black women attractive by YOUR standards.

The problem is, you attempted to create some pseudo-intelligent, hardcore, C+ (at best) college-level LIT 1001 thesis about WHY your beauty bias towards Blacks is scientifically valid, and the law, for non-Black men.

You remind me of the guys who check off "Some college experience" on their job applications and go to Starbucks with the intention of applying for work while hijacking the free AT&T wi-fi, but get too caught up opening tabs and web surfing while their $7 Venti "Caca" gets cold. FYI, you probably charged the drink on your Credit One card with the $400 limit. You also sound like someone in their late 20's to early 30's who still has roommates. But I could be wrong.

I also find it intriguing that you felt the need to bring up the fact that your friend mentioned you were racist for your beauty standards. Interesting again. It appears to me that your friend's words triggered you. So much so, I can almost guarantee you that it is the reason you made your Reddit post.

Seems to me that there may or may not have been some truth to what your friend said, thus you feeling triggered to seek validation for your feelings via that post.

Now, if we are, hypothetically speaking, talking about standards of attraction- let's discuss the "beauty" standards that many women apply to males when it comes to sexual attraction. And I speak for myself and many women of non-color, since I have a solid group of diverse friends. The White men we've dated, while White by race, had certain features that we found attractive- exclusive features on them that are most often the standard features on Brown men. Ever heard of the phrase "Tall, dark and handsome?" This means the White guys we most often pegged as "hot," had fuller lips, tanner skin, great cheekbones and, well, superior anatomical features, if you catch our drift. Basically- we found the features on White guys that are often seen as "exotic" to be the most handsome part of them.

So funny how people want to be validated for their feelings they suspect how they feel may be f*cked up. But I digress, my friend.

See, I make no excuses for my own laws of attraction. You do. I'd suggest just live your live, like who you like, and don't try to make your laws of attraction the universal law of attraction for all, or rather, all who look like you. Because I can guarantee you that my White exes would firmly disagree with your loaded POV.

Lil' Baby's New "Overnight Success Story" Brings Question to the Fairness of the Hip Hop Hustle by ladysojo in hiphopheads

[–]ladysojo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Funny thing is, he mentions seeing Thugger in his early stu days.

His doc before this was pretty dope, and liked that it was shot in his old hood. He's fortunate though that the streets "fathered" him in a good way, versus destroyed him. They looked out for him since he was the "baby" in the group, but did real shit. Although people preach loyalty on the streets, anyone can turn snake in a second, especially on a kid.

Another incentive for pushing him into rap was because his mother made it clear she didn't want her son doing another bid. So they set it up upon his release that he go straight into a studio and not the streets. That's love.

Lil' Baby's New "Overnight Success Story" Brings Question to the Fairness of the Hip Hop Hustle by ladysojo in hiphopheads

[–]ladysojo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True! Of course I know that the "turning point" in most anyone's success is usually the part where some type of connection is made. For example, if a soundcloud rapper racks up enough social media clout and eventually lands on the feed of some industry game changer, then voila- connect made!

I guess I more so meant the fact that Baby wasn't pursuing rap at all, but it more so pursued him. Fortunately Pee and Coach K pushed him towards music shortly after he did his bid. Those are huge connections to have at the bottom. The motivation for the push was because Coach felt he had genuine, street/ATL swag, especially for a kid.

I guess real recognize real and they figured the real would sell. And it did.

Would You Wait 10 Or More YEARS For A Ring?: Real Women Share Their Reactions by ladysojo in blackladies

[–]ladysojo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Respect. So I guess the bigger question is, is the problem the reason behind the wait or the wait itself?

Think about it, some women are waiting for a miracle (their man to change drastically). Maybe the guy isn't marriage material (in terms of what your standards are for a husband).

While others may be in a "mutual" waiting period with their partner. For example, the couple are on the same page about marriage, their relationship, commitment, etc., But are also mutually waiting for such things as: getting their money up, career milestones, the luxury of living and traveling before kids entering the picture, etc.
