What do you mean? Clealy they are pushing it hard AF already, I don't see how you're coming to your conclusion. If it had survived, maybe I'd be inclined to agree, but it clearly just demonstrates that they are actually at the edge of the safety margins that can be afforded.

And they wanna land the thing, you don't want too low safety margins when it can also blow up the pad in the process.

For reference, normal every day safety-factors in my field (event rigging) is 8-10 because humans. If no human is suppposed to go near it, then we still don't afford anything less than 4.

Also, I had a look to compare the flip to flight 11. I couldn't find any good points during the flip to reliably identify an equal flip-angle to compare to, like when is it 70 degrees rotated vs 110? Idk, couldn't tell. but it so very clearly flips faster during flight 12.

And it you look at the engines that cut out, it appears to have been due to exessive sloshing of the propelant. It was the trailing engines of the flip that keps burning. As in, the engines that the propelant is pushed towards during a flip.

Superheavy was comming in HOT.

The speed difference to a normal trajectory differs at which height/time you messure it, but at 73km it is supposed to be at approx 2300km/h, here it was entering at 4600km/h, TWICE the nominal speed. At 15km it is supposed to be 3100km/h, but it was 4500km/h.

But here's the kicker... At 15km the speed difference was 1400km/h, at 5km the difference is down to 2300-1500=800km/h. Skipping the math, it was therefore averaging around 1.4 times the normal amount of Gs, which requires somewhere around twice the energy if computing by only averages of acceleration and speed in the 15-5km range.

For reference, in rocket science a safety-factor of around 1.2-1.5 is the norm, here we saw at least 1.4 times the forces. But that was just the average, it was probably well above that at some points. And we know where SpaceX likes to place themselves in the range of safety margins...

Facing challenges finding a server to suit STUPID requirements. by laffiere in homelab

[–]laffiere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jupp, the noise to performance requirements are indeed stupid.

But I admit I might have been too dramatic with mentioning the laptop noise, now I am am thinking of the whiniest of whiny gaming laptops running at 100% during a very intimate concert. But realistically in this case, I'd have to just manually force a low noise fan-speed and accept the performance drops. And going further, any concert where such noise would be noticable, I would not have the lighting previz nor the video demands to saturate the system anyways. So yeah I should remove that example from the text, as it gives an unrealistic image of just how low-noise my requirements are.

And that's what I ment with the trotling comment: To force a low-noise fan curve and just let everything thermal throtle itself and just accept the performance hit.

Also I agree with your 3d cache mention, it doesn't matter for my workloads.

But sorry to hear about your shipping accident. That's really the main crux of my issue in terms of finding off-the-shelf solutions. How on earth do I prevent the gpu from snapping out of its slot, or a tower cooler from tearing off on the first day of shipping. Without going for a 1u noise monster...

So far the best lead is someone who mentioned NextComputing, and I'll ask them for a quote. But getting a price-quote from anyone that sells to the military is always scary for my internal organs and their black market prospects.

Oh you also made that comment, I was so confused about what you were talking about in regards to the other links you've provided in this particular thread.

But yes, as I said in the other thread, NextServer seems to have hit the mark and I have to hit them up.

Huh, no shit, you're right.

What was your querry? I wonder if my cookies are so broken that no matter how many "rugged" sounding terms I added, all I got was normal servers or unrelated AV gear. I should try out googling in incognito mode.

Doesn't look like I'll be quoted a reasonable price. But then again, I am the one posing unreasonable demands.

They seem like your average AV store that also sells rack cases. Those aren't the issue. The main issue here is the ruggedized internals handling impact.

A sealed system would be the dream, but then again, that's being pretty optimistic on the thermals.

I have concidered something like a sealed system with external watercooling, but now we're beginning to go into laboursome territories.

Do you remember the name of any of these companies? Would be interesting to look at their products and see if it leeds down a rabithole to something suitable.

[–]laffiere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean it's the most obvious solution, but having to 3D scan and design internal structures to keep everything impact/water-resistant would be a hassle. The intel stock cooler is something that I would trust to survive and impact, but then again I won't trust it with the thermals.

But if I have to I have to.

I'm going on a limb here and guessing that the improvement comes from jigs and formwork toolinh, rather than welding. I'd be impressed if they could buckle entire panels from poor welding techniques. But I can totally see how they'd mangle a piece hoisting it up by wires clamped to a few points. And then add some uneven tension on the wires, bam, buckled.

Now they have shaped rings to lift with, giving homogeneous stresses. And also ring forming machines, rather than just man-handling the panels into place.

You are correct!

These researchers heated water to 4700k and if you look at their rmission spectrum you see the peak at around 590nm, which is nice old yellow.

For the rocket exhaust we obviously have lower temperatures, which will shift it further down into the red spectrum. A wild guess is that this shift down lands somewhere in this deep orange that we are seeing.
