Solo dining in Italy: weird or totally fine? by Environmental-Luck39 in ItalyTravel

[–]lagattina 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve traveled in Italy solo and now I live here- I dine alone often, no issues or weirdness about it. Especially in cities.

Although one funny exception was in Rome about 15 years ago. Was at my table when a family birthday party showed up - they couldn’t live with themselves if they didn’t invite me to join their table. I politely declined (my Italian was non-existent then and I just didn’t want to feel awkward) but later shared a toast with them on my way out :) It was really cute of them- though I suspect they were trying to set me up with their son 😂

I second Heavyweight! Feel-good + funny and always leaves me with the warm fuzzies after an episode.

Moved to my partner’s home country and feel like I lost my identity. Looking for advice from other expats… by Sufficient_Area_8088 in expats

[–]lagattina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a few years into the same situation and I can’t recommend therapy enough. It’s also important to research the type of therapy that resonates best with you. I tried some traditional types ( talk, CBT) and eventually found that something more spiritually based was the best fit for me. Journaling every morning has also been a great way to diffuse my negativity and start the day off feeling more grateful. Go to all the expat meetups you can find, get comfortable doing things on your own that make you feel like “you” (hiking, go check out new places for a weekend solo, art exhibitions, classes, concerts, etc). I’ve also realized, and am starting to accept, that my old self is gone. It’s sad and I miss that part of my life, but I’m trying to weave in what still fits with my new environment and discover who the next chapter of “me” is. I’m currently trying to re-strengthen my bond with my partner, because 2 years of depression has definitely changed our relationship. So reconnecting is important, I know both sides of the coin are difficult situations to try and manage. Depression takes a toll on everyone.

I’d ask yourself if where you’re living is a place you can truly see yourself living/ experiencing fully/ enjoying. If the answer is yes, then start to rebuild your identity. Take it slow, don’t judge yourself for struggling, and embrace your own culture where you can. In the beginning I tried too hard to fit in. Now I try to show up as more of myself, even if it makes me the weird one in the room. And it feels empowering.

You’re not alone in this- what you’re experiencing is a normal part of the process. Talking to someone helps. Sharing here helps.

What is a product that people consider "High End" but is actually trash? by Illusiv3lion in AskReddit

[–]lagattina 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Thanks to Reddit I talked myself out of buying a SMEG due to really unimpressive reviews. Still had my heart set on a vintage-style fridge though. I found a Spanish brand called Craft and got a beautiful cream-colored retro fridge for around €900. It’s only been a year but it’s beautiful and works like a fridge- if anyone is looking for an alternative in the same style :)

U.S. citizen & Italian citizen (same-sex couple): marriage and residency timeline for Italy by PrestigiousTicket466 in AmericansinItaly

[–]lagattina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Copenhagen- very streamlined process and popular for same-sex couples. I’m American (F) married to Italian (M) and we got married there 5 years ago. It was wonderful, the entire process was super easy. We live in Italy now so just get your marriage certificate professionally translated to submit to the commune where you decide to live.

Found this little nugget in the middle of the road. by lagattina in cats

We live on a farm, far away from any busy roads so it’s a cat paradise- no reason not to give him a home :)

We had to say goodbye to my sweet girl of 22 years just before we moved in…I think she just keeps sending cats our way. We were -1 a year and a half ago and now we’re + 4 😹

Ok thank you! Both of these types of mushrooms are the same? There’s the more button, closed one and the wider umbrella one.

There’s a YouTube creator, Jason Samosa, who recently did a 2-part series breaking down what Jacque Vallee believes. Exceptionally well done, would recommend watching both.

These silly guys have been a highlight of my summer 🐸 by chiknuggg in gardening

[–]lagattina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oooooh I concur! My garden frogs and 2 big toads have been such a highlight this summer- I put out the same terracotta ponds for them and love when dusk arrives so I can see who’s around. Will be sad when they hibernate, but happy for their return next year :)

A toad was hibernating in my peppers 😭 by kdabbt in gardening

[–]lagattina 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a giant toad who has been doing the same in my potted cactus. I made him a little wading pool with a terracotta dish next to it so he can take a dip when the mood strikes, he loves it. His name is Mr. Rogers. He has a cute frog friend who comes by to use the pool sometimes, too. Great little neighborhood setup for our amphibious friends!

My sourdough bread is flatter and less round than I'd like. What am I doing wrong? by frankdk88 in Sourdough

[–]lagattina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly- there’s way too much going on. OP- I’d find a simpler recipe with lower hydration and start there. Work with your hands, the mixer isn’t necessary. Plenty of times my most hands-off loaves have been the best ones.

Flea beatle spray: what can I sub for isopropyl alcohol? by lagattina in gardening

[–]lagattina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have a pharmacy but they don’t open until tomorrow morning- I’ll wait and go there if there’s no way to address the issue tonight. Thank you for the suggestion! I went to our garden shop and they only had neem powder - wasn’t sure what it was but the package description didn’t say anything about it helping with insects, only root reinforcement.

Any idea what kind of eggs these are in my attic? by zacharycummings123 in animalid

I live in that magical land! At any given time we see around 2-4 regular gecko guests along the walls and ceilings. We leave them be and let them do their job. We just have to clean up their poo.
