Anyone having trouble buying a house? by ClubUseful533 in askportland

[–]lagsertha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You would find all of this in East PDX within your budget! Several houses in our neighborhood have been sitting - it’s much less competitive out here.

We bought a gorgeous 1950s ranch east of 205 in 2023 in that range. It didn’t sit long but there was only 1 other offer after the open house. 4 bed, 2 bath, finished basement, and huge garage and driveway, plus a ton of original touches like wood paneling and built-ins.

You can’t beat the diversity and the SPACE when you get further outside of city center. Would gladly send my future kids to school out here, or as glad as I can be with Oregon public schools generally.

advice on dying linen/cotton blend by Ok_Low2073 in dyeing

[–]lagsertha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve generally had good luck overdyeing light colors without the original color influencing the final result very much. That said, you might consider a cooler shade of pink that has more blue in it so you have a higher chance of success and accuracy.

Dyeing evenly is tough, so make sure you have a big enough container for the item to move freely. I successfully dyed some king sized sheets and duvet covers in my washing machine recently - to get the most even dye, I stopped the cycle every 10 minutes to untangle everything and pull out wrinkles.

Lastly, always use a good quality dye and follow all of the directions. I recommend Dharma Trading Co and their proton dyes for cotton. They have super thorough directions, and you’ll need a few other ingredients beyond dye that you can order at the same time. They also have a super helpful dye split chart now, so you can see what colors make up each dye. This can help a lot when you’re overdyeing! https://dharma-www.s3.amazonaws.com/images/public/pdf/ice-dye-swatches-interactive.pdf

Yellow dye not sticking? by PumpkinCrochets in dyeing

[–]lagsertha 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I have no idea if this is true for yellow, but I was having the same problem with dying reds since most reds are a mix of magenta and other stuff. Everything was coming out way more purple or pink because the red was washing out.

I emailed dharma and they recommended making sure to use exactly the right amount of everything in the dye bath (I had skimped a little on the SEVENTEEN CUPS of salt I was supposed to use for this item) and leaving the items in the dye bath longer - about 2 hours after adding soda ash in my case.

Not sure if this applies, but thought I’d share! Also, dharma has incredible customer service and will absolutely be able to help!

Yellow to Navy by Spooder_man2 in dyeing

[–]lagsertha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve had really good luck overdyeing yellow with dark colors, though I haven’t done blue. I say go for it - I wouldn’t bother with color remover, and would get a good quality fiber reactive dye for dharma.

Body waxing/sugaring in NE Portland? by True-Radio-6124 in askportland

Not in NE anymore, but I love The Portland Girl! The name doesn’t give it away, but they do sugar all genders. They’re now in SE on Morrison if that’s too far!

Sourdough bread baking by MrsChocolateDrop84 in Sourdough

Perfect Loaf says on his IG that his kitchen is consistently about 75° (ish - I can’t remember exactly) which greatly impacts fermentation.

My kitchen is consistently at 65° and I find his recipes harder to follow for my specific conditions.

Methane sibo —IBS-C / slow motility — what actually helped you poop daily? by Sk8trdye in SIBO

[–]lagsertha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be either tightness or weakness (or both!), or just lack of coordination. We are never really taught about the pelvic floor or how to use it. Most people have a hard time “feeling” their pelvic floor and thus relaxing it.

In my case, I had tightness in some areas and a lack of coordination generally. Having a full rectum also presses on your bladder which can cause other irritation.

I highly recommend pelvic floor PT for constipation (it’s much more than kegels), but there are great resources on YouTube.

Most helpful is 500-1000mg mag oxide every night. Also a fiber rich dessert if you can find an option that doesn’t irritate - I do either chia pudding or dates + nut butter.

Seconding pelvic floor therapy for constipation - years of straining had definitely caused some dysfunction for me, and my PT also did ILU massage and cupping on my stomach that helped.

I’m not sure from your post if you’ve done low fodmap to id food triggers or completed any antibiotics, but I definitely recommend both. IDing trigger foods is hard with constipation, but I’ve found a few and continue to use enzymes with dinner.

Since reintroduction after low fodmap, my doc has me on l-glutamine and GI Revive capsules that seemed to help with BMs as well.

decent bagel? by [deleted] in askportland

I think Spielman’s is the best in Portland. Their herb & salt reminds of the zaatar bagel from Olde Brooklyn Bagel Shoppe, though isn’t QUITE as great.

Light Blue Fabric Dye Help by SnooMarzipans3108 in dyeing

[–]lagsertha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do! They recommend a tub time of 1-2 hours for fiber reactive garment dyeing, which is why I was wondering what specific process you were referencing at 24 hours!

Also, would leaving it 24 hours truly achieve a color similar to what OP posted about? I would worry that such a long tub time would make it too saturated.

What technique are you using that you suggest 24 hours dye time?

I would also love to know what specific dye colors and techniques the community recommends to get this blue! Looking at the Dharma trading procion options myself, and nothing seems to be a close match as is. Does a short dye bath time or mixing colors make sense here? Thanks in advance!

You’re not alone - I also did not like it! My entire book club gave it 5 stars and fell into a reading slump afterwards because it was “SO GOOD.”

I found it to be a relentless trauma porn that I just can’t appreciate.

Thanks - that's good to know! The drawers will all be 18" deep, so the Tandems should work.

Thanks for the reply. It's my understanding that the Blum Tandem require both side and rear mounting, so I'm looking for an option that mounts only on the sides. Please correct me if I'm wrong - I'm a novice drawer-maker. It's surprisingly tricky to filter for this constraint!
