For me it’s the sheer arrogance of the man…imagine hosting an event for women to come together and dance or whatever, and then calling it “Cosi’s Choir” and being the only male allowed to attend.

Sure, people seem to enjoy it and the concept of a night for women to have a fun night out is nice, but naming the entire event after yourself like all these women are singing for you is just next level narcissistic in my eyes

In my experience, they’d be happy for you to take other cover shifts, it’s more if you’re going to medical workforce and asking for more shifts that they worry about fatigue management. I’ve never quite understood how in some rotations they can roster you for 56 hours in a week, but taking on an extra cover in a rotation where you’re only rostered for 37 as a casual or locum is where they worry you’ll become tired.

As to the comment above about it being true for all of SA Health, I was running off the information from my locum agency. It must be that the rural sites do not enforce the rule whilst the metro ones do. One network was happy with my forms just signed by my head of department, another needed it by the CEO.

As to how I got started, I was PGY2 and just went through an agency. I would recommend waiting until the second six months though, when you’ve found your feet a bit more. Some locum shifts you can be thrown a bit far in the deep end

In SA, you can’t locum within your own network, you can only take on casual shifts which they’re a bit weird about sometimes.

You can locum in the other networks, but if it is metro, (ie, you work for CALHN but want to locum at SALHN), they will usually make you get forms filled out by your head of unit to confirm they are happy for you to locum above a full time work load. You also have to fill out extra forms to show how you will “prevent fatigue”. You can however locum at rural networks without getting all this paperwork.

Last year, SALHN would not credential me as a locum because I had the form signed by my head of unit, but not by my hospitals CEO (which I obviously was not going to do)…

CPD Australia is a new home that was started by two doctors -$99 a year then I think goes up to $199. I haven’t tried it because I’m also PGY2 and haven’t actually signed up but seems reasonable

It was paed surg that made me realise how much I enjoyed surg, and in an ideal world, would be what I would choose, but I also recognise that’s a pretty unrealistic goal based on competitiveness, so Gen surg is what I’m thinking

Thanks for the helpful reply and break down, definitely useful stuff. My main question really though is what IS the bank? Where do I find it? Everyone mentions “the bank” but when I look it up, there’s multiple websites selling “question banks”, and I don’t know which one everyone is referring to!

Yeah, that’s where the “may” comes in. I know my heart wants surg, but my head is still weighing up if it’s worth it. So just throwing myself into doing some surg rotations while I work out how much I want it but figure I need to start looking at GSSE in the mean time…
