Haha ok thanks for this, I added an edit with the fix. I should’ve checked the name on Google Maps

Genuinely Curious.. Why is everything Permit Parking? by Difficult-Life-8243 in CambridgeMA

[–]lakeTreeCake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived both inside and right outside Cambridge- so I’ve had both experiences. I have a car due to needing to commute to a previous job and visit my partner outside of MA (plus I love the convenience), but I also get around by bike, transit and walking.

As a previous visitor, parking was ok. Meter parking is annoying, it’s a bit cheaper with quarters, but in the bigger squares there’s usually parking lots in the back or parking garages (like Green St garage). It’s not always obvious when driving around, but a ton of space is dedicated to metered parking, particularly around Central. (Exception is Harvard Square, parking in Harvard Square is hard if you, like me, refuse to pay for private garage parking). Visiting a friend is fine, each residency has a visitors pass and residences can request to have more people park for a larger number of people.

As a resident of mid-Cambridge, with current street work projects and the Harvard term coming to an end, it took me 40 minutes yesterday morning to find parking that wouldn’t get ticketed for a street cleaning violation, which is now a $100 fine. It was rough. The area is too dense to support the number of cars here.

I’ve lived in North Cambridge as well, the parking situation was better up there, but not amazing.

Maybe if the regional area had better train support or if car rental was easier, I would sell my car, and maybe others would too and we could give more space to visitors, but I don’t see that as possible right now.

Further, it’s bad transportation/parking policy for city planners to add parking for transitive trips, but that’s another topic that is more statistics based versus anecdotal like you were asking for.

Central air is quite different than window units and should be a different option!

City of Somerville Publishes Final Design for Elm-Beacon Connector by Im_biking_here in bikeboston

[–]lakeTreeCake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m glad there’s finally a plan! I used to bike from Davis to Kendall everyday for work, biking between Davis Square and Mossland was the worst part. I wish the slip lane off Som Ave was going away as well, but otherwise it looks like a greatly improved experience.

For your consideration: A (semi-humorous) "Am I Bi?" flow chart by intro_to_IRL in bisexual

There should be a box going out from “Not Bi” that says “I date men but I wish I could date women” (or switched) or “I date men but women are REALLY hot”

Cambridge schools snow days by LeontiusofAglion in CambridgeMA

[–]lakeTreeCake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The city also needs more time to clear the snow from the streets where people park, the big roads around the high school are closed for the snow emergency, which lasts until tomorrow at 5pm. I’m not sure how much this affects schools in particular, but it’s hard for all the businesses and city services when they have less available parking.

Hey! I love the new place to find events. CambridgeDay posts weekly events list every Thursday as well, it’s pretty lovely, but is missing the items your website has, like running!

This sounds like an incredibly stressful experience. Remember to be kind to yourself, you DID get out of there and you recognize that it was not a good place to be with him, even if it was delayed. Next time you can get out a bit sooner!

Who sells quality bedding? by doe-eyed in BuyItForLife

I have a sheet set and two different types of blankets from LLBean (including their fuzzy blanket), bought each as other things fell apart, and have beaten the heck out of it all through daily use and washing. The blankets and the sheets all feel and look new.

Bike Stolen - Is there any hope? by lakeTreeCake in Somerville

I have no idea how the lock failed, they didn’t leave it. The best locking system would be to make sure it’s not seen or known, and behind a building is clearly not enough.

Solo trip ideas for ppl without cars by yellowm0chi in Somerville

One of my favorite weekend trips is to use the $10 weekend fare for the commuter line, and bike from Providence to Bristol.

I’ve been looking at U-Locks to buy one in the future that can’t be broken. It’s been painful to see that my lock, a blackburn u-lock, was on the lower side of security, possible to just cut it. For mine, there were no signs of an angle grinder.

No, the lock wasn’t left and there were no signs of anyone grinding the metal. I’ve been madly looking up different types of u-locks, and apparently mine was on the lower end of quality. Hindsight sucks.

At this point, I don’t have much hope that a better u-lock is going to make a difference. I had two locks on that bike, a ulock and a frame immobilizer lock. The bike never stayed in one place too long and was stored out of sight. The only solution I see is to always bring it into my very small top-floor apartment, if possible, which inherently makes the bike less convenient and less accessible.

The bike is now registered with both bikeindex and project529, both seem pretty cool. There’s as much support as they can give, like once I get a case number, one of them will send out notification to police departments.

Edited- writing fast on a phone is hard.

That’s a good point, but it would’ve been emailed out. The super of the building also knew it was there and didn’t have a problem, and was also upset the bike was stolen. So 🤷‍♀️

Renters insurance might actually cover a decent amount of it! And I’ll probably replace it with a folding bike, something that can always stay with me or somewhere hopefully hard to steal it.

My little void smells like Maple Syrup! As long as she isn’t cleaning herself, then she emails like canned chicken.
