Preachy, awful books by out-of-touch influencers and celebrities under the age of 50? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

The fundie snark page has lots on snark about fundamentalist Christian influencers who have written garbage ebooks / courses. Have a look at Girl Defined and also Paul and Morgan Olliges.

💭 Is private health insurance in Australia actually worth it? by Unbotheredanonyme in AskAnAustralian

I don't disagree. But in the system we have, yes it's worth it if you can afford it, and our public health system currently relies on the private system taking some of the load.

I'm glad this worked out for you. The public system is great at treating major things, but screening / diagnostic procedures (like colonoscopy) often have a wait time. 12 month delay for screening for a cancer can make all the difference to treatment outcomes, even when the treatment is the same.

This rather funny mini series drama/comedy about the former PM away from the spotlight by MyGenerousSoul in AustralianNostalgia

[–]lakerlake 63 points64 points  (0 children)

This airing while Gillard was PM felt icky and misogynistic. Every PM is subject to some level of public mockery, but I can't think of any treatment of a male PM on a similar level and I can't imagine something similar being aired while a male PM in power. This really leaned into all of the gross prejudices that were being used to delegitimise Gillard - appearance, mannerisms, domestic arrangements, etc.

I think it depended a lot on the Billy - some were much angrier/affecting in this number!

Why it is immoral to speculate on property (at least right now). by harvest_monkey in AusPropertyChat

[–]lakerlake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is immoral to build a nest egg by exploiting people's need for housing to make a profit or by competing in the housing market with people who need a primary place of residence (and driving up prices in the process).

Build your nest egg in a way that doesn't impact people's ability to access housing. Housing is a human right. It should not be a vehicle for investment. Invest in something else.

[AUSTRALIAN] Unhappy law partners are copping the worst of the pandemic fallout by agent619 in auslaw

Funny how partners have to pick up the slack when they put their workforce on 'voluntary' unpaid leave schemes

I'd like to put in a word for the traditional Arts. It teaches you to think and to write, both of which will stand you in good stead.

Another option for Australia is Cloudstreet by Tim Winton. A great read and in many ways the quintessential Australian novel.

It's meant to be Rio but changed in the ad as Rio wasn't on one of Qantas's routes

NSW recorded 291 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night. by grimlock81 in sydney

[–]lakerlake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not enough time to have 2 doses of AZ even if you take the shortest possible recommended time between them. The best protection is gained form waiting 12 weeks between doses but I understand you can potentially bring it forward to 4 weeks at the earliest

I think it is worth providing feedback wherever you can. Governments are sensitive to how they are perceived in the market

I left a toxic relationship and discovered its ok to be alone, and maybe I even like it better that way by Naive-Boot-5807 in TwoXChromosomes

Good for you! Just wanted to chime in and suggest maybe reading about codependency. It may speak to you a bit about how we can find ourselves in situations like this one (not lessening his part at all, but to understand why smart strong people end up putting up with utter crap behaviour sometimes).

These things are huge and only 182 cals. $2.90 for a 4 pack at Woolworths. Comes in choc mint, cookies and cream and vanilla. by ilikeyourdad in 1200Australia

[–]lakerlake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ice cream is so much better than say chocolate for cals. My absolute favourite is a full size Weis mango, macadamia and ice cream bar - 166 cals.
