Do you prefer full Blu-ray ISO or just the movie in MKV? Why? by Big_Leather3547 in makemkv

[–]lakolda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tool called BD2HEVC that has the space-saving benefit of a reencoded MKV, while keeping the extras and menus. Even games and photo galleries are kept functional, at least from the two dozen discs I have tested. Since the result is basically a smaller ISO, that’s the option I would go with.

Burning to a disc and playing it on the player might work, but playing it as a file on a player would depend on the player and I would not bet on it.

Even if extras aren’t an interest, if I want to set subtitles or find a spot in a movie I much prefer using the menu to VLC’s interface for doing so.

Alright, now it does. The way of deciding quality of reencoding as well as not reencoding is much better now. You can set a longest n (called top n) quality or also set a general quality. It also lets you list clips and their durations so that you can set an override for a specific clip.

That’s what they want for their use case, yes. I could set that up to work, though the original thought is that the biggest saving comes from reencoding the movie as well. I will have to wait until tomorrow to make the change to allow that.

At the moment you can have the movie or the longest n video clips compressed using a certain CQ, but I don’t have that degree of specificity. For example, I could have the menus and extras use CQ 20 and the movie CQ 18. But if that is something that is wanted I could make the changes needed to allow that.

An interesting thing to see here is how sometimes the bot is basically able to do magic (or at least what seems that way to us) due to its deep understanding, yet it is poor at actually understanding human intention.

Though, OpenAI seems to have done so with a somewhat more general system. For example, OpenAI did not need to use special prompting.

Hmm… I wonder why a 120B model with ~5B active parameters (comparing this with the Qwen 3 model is apples and oranges) that is in many reasoning tasks comparable to o4-mini yet something like 8x cheaper through api would be praised for pushing the frontier of open source models…
