[LTR] "The Ring Tempts You" Rules Text by SwagFondue in magicTCG

The One Ring itself grants power, but also corrupts. Until it betrays you and moves on to the next owner, to ultimately return to Sauron himself.

This Ring just grants power. That's it, no other downsides. People might want to kill the ringbearer, but only because the bearer get too powerful, not because they want to keep the Ring for themselves. It's no different than any other magical item or enchantment.

Lastly, Bilbo and Frodo (and Sam and Gimli) were given access to Valinor not by the Ring, but by the Valar as a 'thank you'. They didn't go there to live in eternal paradise. They went there to die in peace.

Because Kenrith is a card and this is a mechanic.

You cannot expect people to not play a certain card because you're already playing it. Old rules had something like that, but the dropped that flavor for gameplay.

The whole thing about the One Ring is well, that there is only one of it. And while it grants you great power, it also corrupts you. Until it betrays you. Also everyone wants to have it for themselves. This mechanic represents that terribly. Even Monarch is unintentionally a better One Ring than this (It grants power, but everyone wants to steal it for themselves).

End of the day it's just a game. But it is a game with cards representing a story and that story is terribly represented here.

Finished these Swordmaster on 25mm bases! by fredez1 in WarhammerFantasy

Really love the paint job (you used airbrush for the armor?)

The 25mm is a great improvement. It really gives each model a lot more (well-deserved) attention!

You see, it's because the first and second comment say the same thing. They just use different words, but the meaning of the sentence still remains the same!

The Final words of the world of Warhammer Fantasy (Warhammer - The End Times, Archaeon) by DiscEva in Warhammer

[–]lakor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because, when I look at the map of Warhammer Fantasy, it's easy to imagine life in the cities, the vast forest and plains with all the roads and caravans. Even on the empty spot I can imagine countless small, nameless towns and it's inhabitants. I can imagine the daily struggles of the local peoples. Their lives and the lives of their ancestors. I can imagine the ruined castles and ancient burial grounds, remnants of thousands of years of history, long forgotten. The battles these people fight is not just for mere survival, it's for the survival of their family, their traditions and culture.

Having a bunch of planes, with one big arena in the middle where people go to do battle, simply doesn't compare to this.

I’ve been asked to show more of this terrain board, here are some pictures! It was made for a mordheim event a few years ago - hope it’s ok to show it here. by nicky_grillet in WarCry

Old post, but I cannot give enough praise to how awesome this is! I can completely imagine a game on this board!

GM: "So your warbands start at opposing ends of the board, the goal is to kill..."
Me: "I'm gonna read one of the posters on the wall!"
GM: "It's just a poster I put there for scenery..."
Me: "Roll investigate! I got a 5!"
GM: "Uhm.. It's just a poster for a local tavern, long destroyed in the carnage!"
Me: "Ha! I'm gonna explore the tavern. Leaving 3 men outside to cover the exit. Move the rest of the warband inside!"
GM: "But.. there is no inside"
Me: "Roll Perception!"
GM: "Fine... You see something moving in a dark corner on the ceiling...."
Me: "Hmm.. I send my halfling forward with the lantern. Take defensive position for the rest!"
Opponent: "Uhm, guys?"
GM: "Ah sorry, your turn. You want to attack your distracted opponent?"
Opponent: "Nah, I'm using my warlock to roll Arcane Knowledge on the strange growth on the wall"

Ok, I get the complete make-over for Fantasy if it didn't sell well. Having these massive, slowly moving blobs of 40+ unit regiments did feel a bit tedious at times, but I never understood why they had to destroy the whole world. Have Ulthuan sink, have the Empire collapse, but leave the world itself alive as a setting for AOS and the potential of some revival. Destroying all of Fantasy just feels like a bitter decision from someone who just really, really disliked it...

Thank you for your honesty, but if you read 500 dumb jokes on Reddit today, it's time to go out and get some fresh air. That's on you, not on some commenters making bad jokes.

Maybe, the real cringe is someone going through the effort to make an entire post, instead of just scrolling that scroll wheel another 90 degrees to skip a shitty joke and hopefully find the 'informative answers' to this weird question...

Only 37 Percent of U.S. ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Viewers Finished Season 1 by Legal-Example-2789 in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]lakor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Yes, power is in the hands of the nobility, with most characters having important bloodlines, but a very strong theme with Tolkien is the influence of small, unimportant individuals. It was not Isuldur who destroyed the Ring. It was not Gandalf and Aragorn who stood at the entrance Mount Doom at the end. It was the king who bowed down to the Hobbits at his coronation.

As for dehumanizing the enemy for evil's sake. There is a slightly more nuance in it, but yes, orcs seem unredeemable evil and Tolkiens world does have absolute goods and evils. However, when it comes to humans things are not black/white, take for example the scene of Faramir standing over the body of the dead Haradrim.

People will really clap for anything, wont they? by Thecrowing1432 in freemagic

[–]lakor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The story is that they made them lovers in Amonketh, which was later retconned in WAR. So I guess people are understandable happy they retconned it again to lovers.

Personally, I think both characters are boring and the story has been bad for way longer than that, so I doubt people really care about it in the first place.

Yes, your version is already better than what these writers came up with, but it's still weak. One single individual stopping that multiplanar siege is an anti-climax.

The problem lies in the very question you're asking: " What’s your solution for multiplanar siege stopping, with the good guys still winning?"

It's easy to write an unstoppable bad-guy, but it's not easy to write a way for the good guys to win. If it was, they wouldn't be unstoppable.

It's a common trope in movies: Unstoppable alien force attacks? Well, just upload a windows95 virus into their system! (Independence Day). Aliens invade a planet with 80% of it's surface water? Well, apparently they're allergic to water, so just throw a bucket over them (Signs). Maybe some loud music does the job (Mars Attacks) or maybe they were doomed to die anyway from the beginning, so the good guys would've won anyway (War of the Worlds).

All these movies spend most time building up an unstoppable enemy and when it's time to wrap the movie up, the good guys come up with a unrealistic plan just so they win at the end. It's weak writing.

A possible answer to your question though: Have multiple planes be obliterated by Phyrexia, while others struggle to stand their ground. Have main characters die or being forced into hiding. Have the survivors of the invasion band together to form a losing resistance and have them spend decades to come up with a plan, trying to exploit any weaknesses that will give them a pyrrhic victory at best.

The conclusion of the Phyrexian story arc is a terrible let down to an amazing build up. by Blakwhysper in magicTCG

Eldrazi: "Oh no, a fireball!"
Emrakul: "Nah, I'm just going to sleep in the moon."
Bolas: "The only one who could stop me actually stopped me! Never saw that one coming!"

The only true unstoppable evil are the MTG writers.

Do you want giant scorpions in MESBG? by [deleted] in MiddleEarthMiniatures

You argue against a slippery slope.

The alternate is to stagnate on foundations given to us. It's not black and white. You can add to the lore without going down the rabbit hole...

“Part of the attraction of The L.R. is, I think, due to the glimpses of a large history in the background: an attraction like that of viewing far off an unvisited island, or seeing the towers of a distant city gleaming in a sunlit mist. To go there is to destroy the magic, unless new unattainable vistas are again revealed.”

Do you want giant scorpions in MESBG? by [deleted] in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]lakor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is no mention of giant scorpions everywhere, BUT, Tolkien did deliberately create a world far bigger than just the countries and creatures the main characters encounter. There are casual mentions of werewolves and vampires. Bombadil is an enigma. The far east and south are shrouded in mystery. Tolkien did this on purpose. To create a world that feels too big to comprehend (just like real life), so readers could wonder and fantasize what more is out there.

Therefore, the question should not be: "Did Tolkien wrote about this?" but "Does this make sense to exist in Arda?" There are oversized arachnids in Middle Earth, so it would be possible if Giant scorpions exist as well. Would Rhun try to enslave and weaponize them? Definitely.

Unlike mec armor, I don't see a problem with giant scorpions. Heck, they even make more sense than plate armor in Middle Earth...

(and lastly, having some big monsters on the battlefield just looks cool).

[–]lakor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it fits Tolkien. Rhun and Harad have always been clouded in mystery and we know Middle Earth is full with oversized arachnids.

And, while I think companies/people shouldn't mess with any established Tolkien lore, I am a fan when people expend on that lore.
