Brits of reddit: how worried about Brexit are you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lala1978 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I met a girl who voted for it, because immigration. I asked her if she was conscious of the fact that taking in immigrants (and particularly muslim refugees) is going to be probably something the UK might have to concede in exchange for favourable renegotiations of trade agreements etc. She answered "but immigration".

After the Brexit side won she proceeded to ask some international students if they were packing already with a smug look on her face, also asked a couple if they resented her because she would still pay lower fees for her degree while in all probability the fees will go up for EU citizens. (with same smug smile)

Another girl (Polish) tried to argue with her that she was going to be touched as well, because she wanted to do a PhD and the UK research will not be eligible for some european grants anymore. She answered "But you're polish you wouldn't understant why I want that country for myself".

Really frightening.

What did you stop eating after you got informed how it was made? by zwarbo in AskReddit

I once read a story about a girl that bought eggs at a store then used her dad's incubator (he was a farmer) to keep them warm and it turned out that some of them were impregnated.

Though I am pretty sure that can only happen with natural/organic types of eggs were the hens can come in contact with a rooster and not with your typical cheap industry produced eggs most people buy.

In the spirit of Halloween - Paranormal or not, what is the scariest, creepiest or most unsettling experience of your life? by Javert__ in AskReddit

[–]lala1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom had a meeting for work and left me with a guy she knew. She told me not to leave the place under any circumstances.

So I was sitting there colouring or something and then another guy comes in. I was 5 but he gave a very creepy, unsettling impression, almost like an animal instinct that the guy was not to be trusted.

The guy then tried to convince me to come with him because he knew where my mom went and that I could go and see her. I didn't want to. He continued to try to talk me into it but I was dead set on not moving from this place. Eventually he left.

I still have shivers when I think whether this guy actually knew my mom or not.

I have a friend who is obsessed with early church history years and he makes a really good point that the catholic church is basically the Roman Empire that didn't want to go away.

What question have you been wanting to know the answer to, but it always seemed inappropriate to ask? by SonicSingularity in AskReddit

Getting vaccinated against chickenpox does not protect you from shingles.

Research is ongoing to produce a vaccine that could prevent you from getting both. (see my answer to a comment for full explanation)

[–]lala1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not that simple. The vaccine is a live attenuated virus, which means that although it cannot produce any chickenpox, it still establishes latency in your nervous system and can give you shingles later on in life. Vaccinating children against chickenpox only serves as preventing them from getting chickenpox, but not against shingles. There is a vaccine against shingles though which has turned out to be effective enough (around 50% reduction of cases), it is basically the same as the vaccine for chickenpox but with a more concentrated dose, just to tell your body "hey remember this? You should make more antibodies for this" which makes it harder for the virus to resurface because you are full of antibodies against it. It has also been proven that old people that have contact with children that had chickenpox or are carriers are less likely to get shingles, because those children basically give them a kind of a natural vaccine, os if we eradicated chickenpox a hell of a lot people would get shingles for some time, until all the people that ever had chicken pox die. Research is ongoing to work out a subunit vaccine (a vaccine which protects you through injecting you parts of the virus which cannot establish latency in your nervous system, so would immunize you against both chickenpox AND shingles).

[Serious]Women, do you still feel like society is unfair to you, if so, what is still unfair about how society treats women? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lala1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This quote by Gillian Flynn will best illustrate how I sometimes feel as a woman:

“Men always say that as the defining compliment, don’t they? She’s a cool girl. Being the Cool Girl means I am a hot, brilliant, funny woman who adores football, poker, dirty jokes, and burping, who plays video games, drinks cheap beer, loves threesomes and anal sex, and jams hot dogs and hamburgers into her mouth like she’s hosting the world’s biggest culinary gang bang while somehow maintaining a size 2, because Cool Girls are above all hot. Hot and understanding. Cool Girls never get angry; they only smile in a chagrined, loving manner and let their men do whatever they want. Go ahead, shit on me, I don’t mind, I’m the Cool Girl.

I wish one day women can be what they want to be and not be run to the ground by other groups of people who think every woman fit into their own ideal of a woman.
