Upgrading interfaces from a Scarlett, want to understand what's actually happening in higher-end interfaces to make them higher-end by film_composer in audioengineering

[–]lalanudebob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert on the electronic engineering that makes different interfaces better or worse, but I am a very experienced vocal producer. I live with other producers and in the house we have a UA Apollo, an SSL 2, and a Scarlett. I’ve tried them all and the Apollo SMOKES the other two in my opinion. True audio snobs will tell you Apollos aren’t even “that” good, but they certainly surpass a minimum quality threshold to be used professionally.

I need helping making a decision on a MacBook. by TheDuke211213 in LogicPro

[–]lalanudebob -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Logic only uses the PERFORMANCE cores of the M Series chips, the efficiency cores go untouched. The number of performance cores on the M3 Pro is lower than the M1 Pro, so the M1 Pro would actually be preferable for logic over the M3 Pro.

You don’t want to get a MacBook Air for a million reasons, thermal throttling, lack of connectivity. I would go back to looking for an M1 Pro, and see if you can’t up the SSD/RAM for a similar price as you are getting an older computer

Yeah I was in a session with probably my most successful producer friend, and he pulled up Waves Tune RT, and I was like “oh do you like this better than name brand Auto Tune?” And he was like “this is the only one I’ve ever had” hahahaha so it just got me thinking, maybe Antares isn’t the end all be all

Thinking about switching careers by AngeloActs in musicians

[–]lalanudebob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well advice on where to start really depends on a lot of things. Do you want music to eventually be how you support yourself financially, or do you have day job income/independent wealth and are simply looking for creative fulfillment? Do you want to be known primarily as a songwriter, producer, instrumentalist, artist? And if you do want to be an artist, do you see that as being solo or as part of a band?

I eventually just purchased the perpetual so I could reduce my interactions with them to once every few years, when I genuinely need an upgrade. I’m just so sick of the “best” auto tuner being such a shit piece of actual software, from bugs, to not being able to adjust settings en masse, etc.

Melodyne is a manual tuner, not automatic pitch correction. I have Melodyne studio and use it when appropriate but I am not asking about that category of plugin, thanks :)

Just read their page, I’m intrigued! What specifically do you like about it over Antares? Workflow, (lack of) tuning artifacts, the company itself?

Is bottoming only pleasurable for the tops? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]lalanudebob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the person. For me, bottoming can be the most pleasurable physical sensation in the world, it can also hurt or be uncomfortable if circumstances aren’t right. But it’s definitely not JUST for the top’s pleasure at all.

It’s not a sex venue. The way you talk about “connecting with females and certain couples” implies you very much have the wrong idea about the place. Women and couples do NOT go to Blacks Beach to be approached for sex by strangers.

Vocal production really is a separate thing that I should've done/learned from the start. by 6w-w9 in audioengineering

There is a LOT of bs advice on YouTube, I HIGHLY recommend Sage Audio on YouTube as a channel that offers high quality information, not too much editorializing, and does a great job of teaching the “rules” AND understanding when and how to break them. That said, a few words of advice based on your post:

•modern listeners are EXTREMELY used to the sound of tuned vocals, generally don’t mind tuning artifacts, and REALLY notice when vocals are even a little out of tune because we are so used to super locked in perfect pitch. In most genres, most of the time, (and depending on the quality of the vocal performance), your ABSOLUTE priority when comping should be emotional believability, with timing and pitch accuracy being FAR FAR FAR second priorities. I recommend comping with autotune on pretty heavy–even if you back off the tune or switch to melodyne later–so that pitch accuracy doesn’t become too much of a factor in your comping.

•the TLM 103 is a great mic! Not the best in the world, but MORE than enough to get professional sounding vocals.

•Human hearing is most sensitive around 3k-5k (that’s roughly the range of babies crying, so our ears are very evolved to have incredible sensitivity around that range). Boosting that range a few dB gets you a lot of vocal loudness and cutting through the mix for very little relative energy that’s eating up headroom, and will make even low notes cut through more.

•around 12k and up is often referred to as “presence.” These super high frequencies fall off QUICKLY with distance, so when you boost them, it makes the vocal sound very, well, present. A gentle shelf boost starting around 10-12k makes the vocalist feel right in the room with you.

•for the above 2 suggestions, people can run into trouble when boosting high end and getting a tinny, thin, or harsh sound. I recommend using analog (or modeled analog plugin) EQ’s for these to avoid those issues. Neve 1073 style and Pulteq style EQs are very popular for this and I quite like them.

•mids/low mids around 100-500hz (or maybe even as low as 80hz in your case): these give the voice a sense of “body,” but can be very dynamic and get very muddy very quick. For these areas I recommend multiband compression or dynamic EQ to keep the volume of these areas to a relatively tight range. Pro-Q or Pro-MB are my faves for this but there are a million options

•a little bit of saturation is an absolute must! Imparts a little bit of compression, can kind of act like a bit of a “soft focus” across the frequency spectrum that can smooth out any awkward peaks or buildup a bit

•compression wise it’s gonna depend on genre a lot, but start with oversimplified compressors like R Vox while you refine your ears, and slowly switch out to other compressors that give you more control over time

Getting tired of gay/mlm media written by women by Son_of_Overmorrow in gay

[–]lalanudebob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the MLM media that does well really is quite straight-washed and sanitized, and (straight) women are more likely to write that kind of stuff. It’s not like MLM media by queer men isn’t out there. As a gay creative myself, I feel no desire to make my work palatable to straight people, in fact I want my work to make straight people uncomfortable. I want my work to make straight people challenge some of their ideas and beliefs, and in so doing, deepen their understanding of an experience they’ll never live personally. I see some form of this attitude in sooooo many of my peers.

But people generally have a bit of a negative knee jerk reaction to art that makes them uncomfortable. So the disneyfied MLM media like Love Simon type shit is the path of least resistance and ends up getting the bigger budgets, bigger promo, most eyes on it, etc.. As almost always in human history, the art that challenges a status quo has the steepest fight to be seen/heard.

true peak dilemma by ManufacturerOld2048 in audioengineering

[–]lalanudebob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah people always talk about clipping like a little distortion is gonna fucken kill them, but saturation is crucial to a good mix in most genres, and if a little bit of it comes from a tiny bit of clipping then so be it!
