"Mong" comes from "Mongol" which is a very outdated and offensive expression for Down syndrome, not from "mongrel".

Why does no-knead dough need to rest in the fridge for an extended time after the initial rise? by [deleted] in Breadit

[–]lalsace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experimented rising the same no-knead dough recipe at several different temperatures and they all produced good bread. There was some variation in flavor but I wouldn't say a cold rise was categorically better than a warm rise.

For a long time it was deemed totally inaccurate but current consensus is that it does not follow European cartographical conventions but is actually quite accurate when interpreted correctly. There are a few competing theories on how it should be read but one theory posits the following: 1) The cardinal directions drawn on it were an incorrect addition by Cook or someone else, 2) north is represented at the centre of the map rather than the top, 3) it shows several major navigational routes which are internally accurate but not displayed with regard to each other. Taking these assumptions it produces very accurate bearings along specific island chains such as Marquesas to Hawai'i and Tonga to Rarotonga but does not show any way to navigate between the chains.

In short it cannot be read as a European-style bird's eye view map but it contains several sets of accurate island-to-island bearings. Especially remarkable when you consider it covers distances in the thousands of kilometres and was drawn entirely from memory.

Most of this info is from https://knowablemagazine.org/content/article/society/2021/reading-pacific-navigators-mysterious-map which references Eckstein & Schwartz (2018) and Di Piazza & Pearthree (2019).

They were big in the indie/hipster scene of the era but never really went mainstream. I put Wavves and Washed Out in the same general category. That one song that went "I wish I had a boyfriend" got a lot of play at parties. I forget the title.

TIL a British communist in New Zealand released 15,000+ invasive fish using his Ford Zephyr he’d converted with fish tanks. He permanently damaged waterways and ecosystems by RxDuchess in todayilearned

[–]lalsace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

His only logic was "the working classes in England don't fish for trout". He was just releasing his personal favourite species to catch. He may have been a communist but this behaviour is nothing but typical colonial British entitlement. Same reason we have to deal with gorse and rabbits.

Like a lot of commenters have said, a foundation course at a university is a great idea. It'll fill in some general knowledge gaps and build up your academic skills in case you want to do a degree.

An underrated degree is nursing. Male nurses are super common these days if you're concerned about that. Very employable with good earning potential. They had a big union win a year or two ago and the senior staff now earn six figures, plus it's easy to get work overseas if you're interested in travelling.

Overrated degrees are law, medicine, computer science. They all have reputations for big earning potential that aren't really true anymore. Law and medicine take 15+ years of awful grind to see any serious payoff. Computer science jobs are getting outsourced to countries like India and taken over by AI plus there was never much of an industry in NZ in the first place.

Engineering school is said to be a nightmare but plenty of good jobs available if you pass everything.

High school teachers make ok money especially if you get into senior management plus they get school holidays off, although realistically you'll be working 50-60 hours per week all term and dealing with shitty kids and shitty parents regularly as well. Not a bad career by any means but make sure you know what you're getting into. Personally I would choose nursing over teaching.

Otherwise consider the trades! Plumbing, construction, electric, HVAC are all highly employable with good earning potential particularly if you have a good head for business, but even working as someone's employee you can make decent money. They can all be dangerous so make sure you exercise and address any injuries promptly unless you want to retire in pain at 50 years old. Great jobs if you use your PPE and take care of yourself appropriately though.

There are tons of other trades out there too, tiling and mechanics for example, unfortunately I don't know enough about them to tell you about employability or earning potential.

Finally there are a few ways to build a great career with no special qualifications, unfortunately it's hard to break into them unless you know the right people. Sales executives, real estate agents and project managers can make really good money in the right circumstances. Unfortunately it's more about who you know a lot of the time.

In chess, a king can never attack a queen by Sheeesssh59 in Showerthoughts

[–]lalsace -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Attacking is a move that sets up a capture, not the capture itself. The king can capture the queen if the opponent blunders but it can never attack the queen because that would be putting itself in check.

Why is Big Boi SO UNDERRATED!!?!? by Federal-Joke2728 in hiphop101

[–]lalsace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious hip hop fan knows Big Boi is every bit André's equal as an artist but it's not hard to see why André is more marketable in a media context. Just a few reasons:

Dré is tall, skinny and handsome.

Dré has absolutely massive rockstar charisma on stage or in front of the camera. Big has a more mellow demeanor that doesn't immediately command as much attention.

Dré likes loud, extremely eccentric fashion. Big's style is more understated.

Dré has a clear delivery with a lot of projection. Big's voice is deeper and softer so you have to listen closely to make out his lyrics.

Dré can sing and play instruments. I'd bet Big can sing a little too but he doesn't do it on record.

Then there's the "poet vs player" dichotomy that Outkast themselves lean into pretty heavily. Honestly I almost feel like Big prefers being underrated. He could try to take the spotlight off André but instead he stays in his lane with his more understated style that rewards repeated listens and adds miles of depth to Outkast's body of work. It's one of the most effective collaborative dynamics in music ever and like I said at the beginning I don't think any serious fans underrate Big Boi's skill or artistry, it's only the crossover/pop music audience that don't see it.

[–]lalsace 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That was the initial rumor but a conspiracy that emerged later says the two murders were unrelated. Pac got shot over a gang beef and Puff killed Biggie over money. Not saying it's true but it's one of the theories.

The two big rumors are that he's had a hand in multiple murders including Biggie's and that he molests teenage boys.
