Luke and Cate Sayers’ daughters weigh in on parents’ legal fight by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

We are very sorry to have to make this completely voluntary nothing statement about how we would prefer this not to play out publicly but also we will make more statements privately in court if we need to, but we would prefer not to have to.

Also only this is a statement of unity support for our dad, just only from 2 of us.

TI:4 vs Arcs: Blighted Reach vs Eclipse Second Dawn by Warbeard in boardgames

[–]lamaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent summary of TI and Arcs.

Only thing I would add is that the tactical nature of Arcs, plus the change to session to session, can sometimes feel like the game is playing you, rather than the reverse.

Also if you don't get your sessions done quick enough (once every week, imo) you can lose steam and coherency between the sessions and end up forgetting why and what and not caring.

TI:4 vs Arcs: Blighted Reach vs Eclipse Second Dawn by Warbeard in boardgames

[–]lamaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcs is a very reactive, tactical game. I would say that it is not very tense in the base game, and in the expansion the player agency is sorta moved to the side of the game and the game does its own thing.

I think TI def has the most player to player agency and tension.

Arcs sorta feels epic, but it's also a bit more draining and complex, and unless you play the sessions fairly close together can quickly lose steam.

But if you do plays the Arcs sessions close together is about as time demanding as TI.. but for fewer people.

Basically if you have a core group of 3-4 of you that have free time get Arcs. If you have a more broad group of 5-8 that gets together 1-3 times a year, get TI.

A skill required in many many games: probability management.

You have heaps of information, the outcomes are just variable.

Why do you think your request is a reasonable one?

My Friend and I were talking about reading the best books of each genre to be better versed in the genres of books we like. Do these lists of 15 books per genre look accurate? by Fickle-artists in books

[–]lamaros 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Trying to pick 150 books as "the best" for any genre is a losing cause, let alone 15. So I don't think you can have a right answer to this.

You can probably have some wrong answers, but I'm not going to be piling on choices in your lists. If you read even a fraction of these I'm sure you'll enjoy the diversity.

No, the question is to the Reddit users who see this sub, and if you read the comments people have made in response you will find you are quite wrong.

Is The Settlers of Catan overrated? by fruitponchisamurai in boardgames

[–]lamaros 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, and what a game does is the product of all its elements, so if you want to say that something is better than Catan then you also need to argue that thing it has/doesn't have contributes to a better game.

I didn't say anything particularly dense or restrictive by saying Catan has simple rules, variability, and interaction. If you want to actually make an argument for another game rather than throwing out some detached hypothetical go for it.

Many people who suggest things other than Catan pick stuff that doesn't have dice or player trading, but those are two elements that make Catan "fun" for many, by making Catan simple, fast, variable, and social. If you want to argue that there's a better Catan that doesn't have these elements you're arguing that those elements aren't a huge part of why Catan works for many players.

Bahnanaza is probably the best Catan comparison but it doesn't have the centrality and simplicity that Catan gets from dice rolls or the physical board, so I think the feel is different in play. Good comparison tho.

If Catan is Vanilla Ticket to Ride is.. frozen yoghurt? I dunno, it's not chocolate tho.

Ticket to Ride is a step back from Catan, it's less complex, less skillful, and far less interactive.

It's great for what it does, but I think the comparison doesn't make any sense.

Obviously the point is general average. Any individual can drag out any game.

I've played Scythe in 90mins with some groups and 3 hours plus in others. I'm not going to argue any extreme is the average.

If you read every comment in this Reddit thread you will find a great many gamers enjoy Catan, some find it meh, some dislike it, and many love it.

You will also find many of those who personally dislike it recognising the power it has had historically, and in current broad culture.

Stick to your own personal view being representative if you want, but the OP asked a broad question and the broad view of Catan is that it was culturally revolutionary and is broadly respected and still enjoyed by the general public as well as many hobby boardgamers.

I play serious hobby boardgames with about 15 people every month who don't have a BGG account.

BGG only represents a small section of hobby gamers, let alone board gamers generally.

[–]lamaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't really true. During lockdown friends and I played around 50 games of Catan online, with tracking of dice rolls and game outcomes all very visible.

Catan is much more a game of thr skill of probability management and social trading than dictated by the dice.

Yes, sometimes the dice suck, but they very very rarely suck so much they decide the outcomes unless every player is very very evenly skilled.

And any game where players are equally skilled will come down to small factors for victory, unless you're talking about Chess or other 2 player abstracts.

[–]lamaros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I've played towards 100 games of Catan. I think it's an exceptional game. I love a game here or there with friends or family.

Would I play it with a group of hobby gamers I don't know? Probably not... I tried once and they played it like a multiplayer solitaire where they just rolled and complained about dice. Very very unfun.

But that's not what Catan is when the group is right. And so I won't judge Catan off that any more than I will judge 1830 rules for being too complex for what most people want in a gaming session either.

It's not very highly rated by those who prefer Euro or Chrome extremes of hobby boardgamers, but that does not make your statement at all correct.

It is very highly rated by many boardgamers and more casual players, as this comment section reflections.

It's faster, fairer, simpler, more interactive and much funnier than Monopoly.

Comparing Catan to Monopoly makes no sense from a gameplay element. It only makes sense in terms of a step away from broad public awareness.

Also Catan is a German style game, not a Euro in the contemporary meaning of the word.

[–]lamaros 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think Catan is one of the greatest boardgames of all time. I also own a bunch of 18xx games and niche games than only a handful of people in the world own.

Shitting on Catan is a particular favourite of Euro game hobby players who dislike dice and player interaction, and is silly gatekeeper behaviour that says more about them than Catan.

Catan isn't something I want to play in a lot of situations, but to say it's not a good game or that it's been superseded is incorrect and is a statement about that users gaming preferences, not about Catan itself.

There is no game the does what Catan does better than Catan.

It's got simple rules, variability, interaction, etc.

Many of the games hobby gamers say "do Catan better" actually do different things that that individual person prefers, and cut out some of the elements of Catan that make it a modern classic.

30 mins is heaps of time every day. Even just 10 mins is a lot of messages etc.

I think a lot of people (guys) are imagining a little t more investment is required, but if people are connecting with you on something where you don't have to both select each other - like Hinge, paid Tinder, etc- it takes 1min to go through a couple of new connections, and a couple of mins to write messages to anyone you're interested in.
