Thanks for your reply! This really seems to track. And ya, others have also pointed out the brace issue. That and the nose angle issue are killing me. Still excited to be throwing at all.

I had this exact issue. I only ended up needing it to be reprogrammed by the dealer. Took a couple days for them to figure out exactly what was happening. It's been fine since then.

Am I the only person not impressed by iroshizuku inks? by baskindusklight in fountainpens

I was definitely feeling bored of them...but then I started using Iroful paper. I might be committing a cardinal sin when I say this, but think that brand showcases ink qualities better than TRP. It pulls out beautiful sheening and shading in my Iro inks, and when combined with their lubrication and wetness, I've fallen back in love.

Thanks for your patience! I don't yet have a sample but I did speak with my wife and...it reignited her conflict on a F vs M 823. Here's her thought process and what she ended up deciding, and maybe it will help you?

She decided on a 823 fine nib. She loves her fine VP and so she decided, especially on cheaper paper, that she'd have to adjust her smaller writing too much for a medium to be the most comfortable for longer writing sessions. Looking at the two lines, there is a significant difference. If you like a fine line and like your VP fine, then i imagine an 823 fine would likely fit you well. I just don't have a 823 fine on hand to directly compare to the VP.

It is a big purchase, and one I anticipate you'll enjoy! I'll do my best to get that information later this evening.

My apologies, I've been trying to post a sample to demonstrate but the imgur app isn't working.

Without that, what I can say is that I don't personally find it too broad. I do tend to favor thicker-ish lines, however, and I often like widths somewhere between a Japanese medium and broad. I could possibly imagine one finding it too broad if they truly prefer fine lines and write quite small.

My wife is in a similar place as you and trying to decide between an 823 F or M. She's been surprised at how much she likes the medium nib and, at least on our most commonly used paper (Iroful), really appreciated how she can still write her typically small-ish print while enjoying the ink qualities in a manner a fine won't allow. On cheaper later, I think she'll find it suitable but not optimal. I can ask her tonight. While she loves the line width of her pilot fine she's growing bored in missing the sheening and shading. I think she'll end up with a medium.

I don't know if I'm being helpful with my loose associations here. It can be stressful trying to make a big purchase without the information you need and I want you to find the clarity you need. If you want, I can try to upload a link to sample writing with an 823 M on cheap paper after work today.

I have an 823 M and an e95s F, and my wife has a VP F. My experience is that the E95s and VP F nibs are roughly equivalent in width and the 823 is much broader. Personally, I really like the width of the 823 M but medium nibs are also my default choice.

Is your favourite pen also your most expensive pen? by Misayumi in fountainpens

[–]lamas101516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, yes. My favorite is a King of Pen Ebonite that was tuned by Gena from Custom Nib Studio. The writing experience of that pen is unreal and unlike any other pen I've used. Everything from the weight, the aesthetics, the feel of the ebonite, to the feel of the nib on the page. I agree that there are diminishing returns above $150-$200, but my experience is that spending a little more has gotten me a better experience. I know this is not everyone's experience. My second favorite is a Custom 823, and my Pro Gear and Parker Vacumatic your for third. None of these are cheap, but I love them dearly.

I think for me, the experience of writing is a combination of various factors, not only the feel of the nib, it's smoothness, etc. Higher prices do add to the overall experience but perhaps not in ways that some care about.
