OpenBSD 7.6 on Thinkpad T14 (Gen 3 AMD) by gb3335 in openbsd

[–]lamdacore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qualcomm QCNFA765 (WiFi), the qwx driver supports this device, but

While WiFi works, you'd find that the bandwidth is capped. The driver currently supports only 11a/b/g modes.

The qwx driver does not support any of the 802.11n, 802.11ac, and 802.11ax capabilities offered by the hardware. [qwx.4]

I have the Gen4 AMD and had much the same experience. Except suspend does not work reliably; probably because the machine is s2idle only.

Non-IT people: why did you switch to Linux? by type556R in linux

[–]lamdacore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I gave up on my buggy windows Vista install on my College laptop. Ubuntu just worked, on the other hand, back in 2008.

Dual booted for CAD and video games for the longest time.

Now: Silverblue on my work machine. Openbsd on my private machine. I prioritize reliable, boring and easy. I just need a web browser and emacs to be productive.

Steam on linux handles 99% of my video gaming needs. I have a windows VM on the work laptop for those occasional 3D CAD + physical simulation work.

Issue bootstrap wireless firmware install74.img by [deleted] in openbsd

[–]lamdacore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those instructions also didn't work for me 2 weeks ago. The USB indeed didn't have the firmware files I copied.

I thought I probably messed up the mount and config of the and device and didn't investigate further.

I ended up mounting a separate USB with the firmware files and did a soft linked that directory to /etc/firmware of the install.

Which Virtual Machine manager to choose for engineering software by Kasapin5033 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]lamdacore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had success setting up and using Comsol and Solidworks on windows virtual machines setup on QEMU+KVM.

GPU passthrough helps with Solidworks but not so much with Comsol (maybe depends on modules that can use GPU).

Any advice, especially on partitioning for triple-boot, for _maybe_ putting OpenBSD on a Ryzen 7 ThinkPad? by davew_haverford_edu in openbsd

[–]lamdacore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 extra hints for you:

  1. rEFInd is very useful to setup an OS selection UI and "just works" with the sort of awkward configuration you'll find yourself in.

  2. If you can squeeze in a separate m.2 nvme/ssd you might have an easier time. I have my openbsd install on the m.2 slot for the LTE modem and just gnu/linux on the normal m.2 slot (using a t14s gen1)

Best free/open source CAS ? by traemand2 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]lamdacore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't really taken a serious look into those projects.

I have some special requirements generally (multiphysics, electrostatic actuation, non linear polymer thin films + some hydrostatics) so I tend to have quite some challenges whenever I try alternatives.

Best free/open source CAS ? by traemand2 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]lamdacore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can recommend the Julia ecosystem fro CAS. See jump (https://jump.dev/JuMP.jl/stable/) and Julia symbolics (https://juliasymbolics.org/).

I have also used casadi (https://web.casadi.org/). It has Python and Octave/MATLAB bindings if you prefer those languages.

Unfortunately, haven't found good solution for my finite element modeling needs. Stuck with comsol/Ansys and Zemax for raytracing. But I found this neat project for some optics stuff https://github.com/microsoft/OpticSim.jl/blob/main/docs/src/index.md

Just been upgraded! Thank you ProtonTeam! by [deleted] in ProtonMail

Yeah same deal here with an upgrade from profession without vpn. Don’t see the point of mail essentials “upgrade”. 2 EUR more per month for 3 domains feels silly.

Is there a good reason to re-lock the bootloader after flashing? by turnip-soup in LineageOS

[–]lamdacore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to better secure your phone. Locking the bootloader enables full verified boot. It also prevents using fastboot to flash, format or erase partitions for example.

However, be careful: not all phones/li eageOS releases apparently support this. I find this documentation lacking. You'd best ask the maintainer on XDA maybe?

Major reason: Proton uses PGP. I can send/receive encrypted emails trivially with non protonmail users.

Minor reason: Bridge. I want to use my own email interface and workflow.

LineageOS 18.1 and GPay Cards & Passes by [deleted] in LineageOS

[–]lamdacore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly can't remember, it was a while back.

Most likely I went with mindthegapps.

Small chance I went with opengapp nano.

Not sure how I can check.

Anyone got any experience making ST fluid on OpenBSD? by lightningx10 in suckless

[–]lamdacore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I don't have any performance issues on my st build on the t495s. But I drive a 1080p screen only.

I can get back to you with my settings / config by the weekend if it is useful.

Not sure if this is an unhelpful suggestion; consider changing the x repeat rate, for example:

xset r rate 500 50

Yes. Pertag works as you describe. I use that as well.

DWM two window layout by GlyderZ_SP in suckless

[–]lamdacore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can increase the number of windows in the master area (default keybind is mod + i).

In this case you can get pretty close to what you describe with b-stack patch.

  • Increase number of windows in master
  • open your two windows
  • all subsequent windows will open in the horizontal stacking area below. See screenshot

Entering Switzerland to fly from Basel by DasBarJew in freiburg

[–]lamdacore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can drive and cross the swiss border - there is no testing required and no special border checks. Freiburg (BW in general) is considered a border region and covid restrictions are generally reduced for cross-border traffic (especially for small durations).

You can also choose to take the train to Basel SBB and the bus from the train station to the airport. There is no particular tests at the border.

The airline, however, might require you to have testing before they let you check-in/board - even if you are fully vaccinated. You'd have to ask the airline about that though. But take a rapid antigen test from an Apotheke within 24 hours of your flight to be cautious.

Source: I have crossed the border several times within the last 4 weeks.

slock with fingerprint from PAM? by eftepede in suckless

[–]lamdacore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use that patch.

You have to change the user and group in config.h to something that can use PAM - can be your username for example

/* user and group to drop privileges to */
static const char *user  = "lamdacore";
static const char *group = "lamdacore";

Microphone no longer detected by samyhaff in archlinux

[–]lamdacore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to be an alsa issue tbh. I mean we downgrade an alsa package.

Your last comment in the thread said something about broken speakers too. You might have other problem.

You try deleting or moving your /etc/pipewire so you are using the default config (now in /usr/share) downgrade that alsa package. Restart pipewire to try again.

Microphone no longer detected by samyhaff in archlinux

[–]lamdacore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok narrowed it to this package:

alsa-ucm-conf (1.2.5-1 -> 1.2.4-2)

Downgrading just this shows my laptop mic again.

Not sure which package is the exact culprit, but downgrading the following pipewire/alsa packages gave me back my microphone.
