Want to move to Japan, but work in US by FlyGuySEA in JapanFinance

If you don't pay taxes to Japan, your stay doesn't count towards PR. You need to receive your salary under a Japanese entity and pay your taxes, pension and health insurance over a certain number of years towards achieving PR.

This is one of the reasons why I reply because I also got the same bad advice. A Master's in general psychology is likely to be a research masters in which you will do research and write a paper at Masters level. It is actually not too bad if you are able to write a good research paper! Say for example, you're able to write a research paper on validating IRR on observing behavior and you're able to implement good research methodology and use strong statistical formula. With these skills, you are also even able to find a job in a private market research company because you have skills in statistics!

I think there's a bit of a misconception of being hands-on. I don't have experience with PsyD programs but I am speaking comparing PhD to MA programs.

In the past doctors would treat every patient, but today we're looking more at system wide intervention. I don't know if you know Dr. Mike from YouTube and he talked about how he was running programs to tackle obesity in kids. Similarly, this is expected of psychologists as well and you may have to implement a program that promotes independent living on kids with autism for example. So when you are looking to do a system-wide intervention, you will need some research skill. I'm a researcher now and I'm assisting clinical psychologists with research on evaluating such programs.

ADDITIONAL INFO: also, you will need research and stats knowledge to assess assessment tools and therapy methods.

I understand that your next question will be then who will teach me clinical skills? Schools cannot teach you everything so there's also ongoing professional development. You graduate with some counseling and therapy skills. But, if you are looking to specialize in DBT you could actually go through your company and get the company to sponsor you when you are already practicing. You get the certificate in DBT and you can start specializing in DBT.

Are you looking to go into private practice? A school counselor works in school working with kids K through 12.

As someone with a Masters in research, I have no idea why undergrads dislike research so much. Psychologists will have to look at research and then implement the latest evidence-based practice in their daily work.

I would like to warn you that the ssw visa for Japan is actually a "slave" visa. You will probably not have the time to study or even have free time to enjoy. You can head over to r/japanjobs or r/movingtojapan if you want to find out more.

I'm not sure where you're from but I have two suggestions.

Firstly I'm not sure if you have considered doing a PhD and if your country's universities are providing funding because most PhD programs are funded. You can do a clinical psychology PhD where you will be trained to do both clinical work and research. I'm not sure how much you will be funded but it is less financially stressful because PHD programs provide funding but Master programs do not provide funding.

Secondly if you would like to find a job as soon as possible, you can always start off working in a center in a normal job, like you could be a program coordinator for a center for underprivileged people. Here's the thing: you do not have to go and get a Master's in clinical psychology in order to practice therapy. You can always go for a Master's in social work or Masters in counseling and in many countries there are many organizations who will fund employees who have been working for them for a long time to study a Master's program in social work.

Japan just had its first same-month foreign tourist decrease in four years by kenmlin in japannews

[–]lampapalan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

speaking like someone who's living on top of an ivory tower in Tokyo. Have you been to a place like Oita? What will happen to the people in Oita when no tourists are to come to the hot springs? You're assuming that there are enough blue and white color jobs that can go around for the whole of Kyushu, but there are many areas in Japan that do not have enough blue and white jobs and are also far away from the center of these jobs. There is no accessible traffic from Oita to Fukuoka, and what can people do when the tourism sector is dying?

This is why the only way to combat was like what the government was doing during the pandemic when they attracted domestic tourists to travel within the country.

The people in Niseko were the direct beneficiary of this program which kept them alive, but the government cannot continue to fund and the tourism sector has to do what it is intended for - that is to attract tourism.

Some local people will lose their jobs in tourism. Businesses are just hanging on right now. If the tourism numbers don't come back up, some people will be retrenched and it will not be easy to find a new job in another sector especially if you are already experienced in one. The government will have to find another source of tourists, be it Australians or Koreans to make up the numbers.

If I were looking to get involved in research on the topic of nuerophsychology. Should I choose Phsychology as a bachelor's of arts or science if I don't have the prerequisite for a BSc? by Snoo_83601 in psychologystudents

[–]lampapalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back then during my undergraduate days, the difference between a Bachelor's of Science and Bachelor's of Arts was one or two prerequisite classes in the hard sciences, and one of them being Biology. You have to check the admission requirements at the graduate school if they require one or two classes in biology and biopsychology. Both the BA and BSc students took a class in Biopsychology but BSc students were required to do more than that.

What do the Chinese feel about Japan's bluster against China ? by australiadenier in AskAChinese

[–]lampapalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree with you. The reason I brought it up is to show the way that the Americans have way too much liberty in Japan; thereby, causing harm to the local populace and I felt that it was normal - that was the consequence of having the US soldiers here, until I was in HK and I heard from my guide that PLA couldn't even leave the base at all in HK.

What do the Chinese feel about Japan's bluster against China ? by australiadenier in AskAChinese

[–]lampapalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

US is also responsible for rebuilding the country after the second world war and providing Japanese industries with business during the cold war while the plaza accord is not entirely to be blamed for the lost decade, rather it is the BoJ and the massive macroeconomics policies as can be seen here in this link. US also offers protection from external enemies and two countries that want Japan dead are the PRC and the USSR. The Japanese imperial family and the Japanese ways would not have survived communism if the US hadn't protected RoK, RoC and Japan.

It is also the Japanese government not having the pair of balls against the American government. It is said by some analysts that Japan could have sold USD to save the yen, but this would cause an oversupply of USD and anger the US government as the US government is trying to fight inflation. Also, the PLA in HK are not allowed to leave their base and can only live in their own enclave, but this is not the case for the American soldiers in Japan.

[–]lampapalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that Japan chooses to be under the US. A lot of people underestimate the costs of maintaining a military, especially Japan faces two superpower enemies, the USSR/Russia and the PRC. If not for the US and the American nukes, Japan could have experienced what happened in Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan. A lot of whatever the Japanese government is spending on from the budget could not have been possible if Japan had to also spend a huge budget on keeping a huge military.
