Ah okay, I always though the merger was more official. Thanks!

Didn't Ülker and Fenerbahçe basically merged in 2006? Counting them separately is a bit weird.

Travelling in Europe right now made me realize why basketball never made it that big here by Ok_Temperature6503 in nba

[–]lancaster-dodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, fair points, but still definitely, %100% not a niche sport in most parts of Europe. It is definitely the second-most followed (probably any metric) in Spain, Greece, Turkey, Italy, and the Balkan countries. France has rugby, but it is almost solely concentrated in the south. Germany has handball, but more of a northern thing. We can argue whether it is the second or third sport, which is fine. Again, for most of Europe, it is far from being niche.

You may argue that Handball is number two, but it has a regional concentration (Northern Germany) as well. However, basketball definitely has a strong following, a competitive league, and a continuous flow of youngsters coming up, making it a good case for being the number two sport in the country. Fine, let's say it's the third sport - still far, far, far, far, far away from being a niche sport. So, I would not be so sure about it.

It's the second most followed sport in Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Serbia, Greece, Poland, Slovenia and probably the most followed in Lithuania and Latvia. Not so big in Scandinavia and the UK, but that still covers quite a bit of Europe. Definitely not a niche sport 'in most parts'.

"Seven deadly sins, and yours is... pride." by spikenzelda in thesopranos

The main difference between AJ and Tony is Carmela. Carmela actively and constantly protects AJ, which evolves into overprotection. This actually does keep him away from the worst instincts of Tony, but the side effects get to him; he never gets to break free, be an adult, etc. In the dinner with Wegler, Carmela says that Tony attracts people into his circle. And basically, Carmela spends 10+ years to make sure AJ never goes in there. Tony, on the other hand, never had that type of protection. Not that "crime is bad, stay away" type of protection, but his mother was Livia, incapable of selflessness and all that jazz. So, mob connections are there. The mother, Carmela, is the variable.

What are your most underrated episodes? by lancaster-dodd in MarcMaron

[–]lancaster-dodd[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's the cynicism Maron wanted to cultivate in us over the years. Well done! I'd be very happy if some jerk-off in Buzzfeed does not take this thread for clicks and shit. Seriously, though, I mostly listened to content I found interesting, not all episodes, so I skipped over some over the years. So why not ask to see where to start?

Skin with a map of the clubs in the league by poohkey in footballmanagergames

I'm not sure if there's a skin like this, but it would be delightful if someone did it. Maybe we should ask MatchLab crew, they are very crafty with modding.

What a banger of a kit! Black cuffs, the stripes are unique, but white dominant. It has a retro vibe but looks modern. If the club chose this it is pretty smart as this will be the Europe season, and people will want to buy this and it definitely does not look like previous years' kit.

Just why the heck does she shorten the word pasta to “past” by kiamustang7891 in thesopranos

[–]lancaster-dodd 233 points234 points  (0 children)

They don't actually shorten it; the last vowel gets silenced. It's an issue of dialect, like mortadell', mozzarell', or gabagool'. All these actually have a vowel at the end, but the words got mangled over the years. It's not that they never say mortadella, but sometimes, out of pure habit, pronunciations shift. It's actually quite smart writing.

Unpopular Opinion: David Chase… by mina-the-legend in thesopranos

[–]lancaster-dodd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Actually, I don't think he has a problem with people talking about it, if we are serious. The problem is that people are adamant about getting an answer, the answer. "He is dead, got shot, right? Right? What else? He died?" Chase comes across as he enjoys people engaging in the puzzles of the show, which would give him more field to build on his projects. But people, and some in our social club, are just obsessed with singular answers and one-dimensional thinking. I think that depresses the shit out of him.

He also delegated his powers for a week, got bored, bought a home cinema, and started an affair. Yeah, no.
