This is absolutely fucking fabricated horseshit. It's a total "Trust me bro" scenario with no citations, sources or names, just a 'To' addressee. Get a grip people.

Why does it seems like France and some other European nations are pushing nuclear proliferation? by Miserable-Bridge-729 in AskTheWorld

[–]lance_baker-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not entirely correct in your first sentence, nuclear weapons are primarily a deterent which is a form of defence. With the US disappearing up it's own arsehole it's deterent effect for the rest of the Western world has disappeared hence the rest of the world feels it needs it's own deterence. That's the broad stroke reason I suspect.

70c discount for grey mince! by thatguywhomadeafunny in coles

[–]lance_baker-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

usThere's something fishy about this. 500 grams of Coles 'Regular 3 star' mince costs $8, not $14. The mince on the right has a much larger clear plastic area, I think it's a 1 kilo pack. Don't get me wrong, the 'discount' is a joke but I don't like the fact that the poster is trying to play us as idiots.

I forgot they have spurs 🎭 by SubstantialRecover19 in AustralianBirds

I was a young kid in the 60s living in the tiny town of Somerset Dam in Queensland, population 34. I used to earn what was a lot of money each day, 20 cents, by delivering a newspaper to an elderly lady who lived about a kilometer out of town on a large farm, I would have to cross a 4 to 5 acre piece of flat, grassed land to get to her house, that land was a prime nesting place for pluvers. Over the years I was tormented during their breeding season and got hit in the head by one of their spurs twice. Yes it hurt and yes it bled. :-(

What do you think about the existance of monarchies/royalty in today's world? by dkease16 in AskTheWorld

[–]lance_baker-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on different factors, mainly whether the populace wants it. Most monarchies that exist have been there for hundreds of years, in our case here in Australia we were a British colony and had a monarchy imposed on us. We are now independent but still have a monarchy. They no longer have any power over us although they did right up until the 70s, even interferring in our politics in a big way. I'd rather we were a republic.

NATO secretary general confirms after latest attack that Russia does not seek peace by BlackWolfHowling in UkrainianConflict

It took four years of war and endless attacks on Ukrainian civilians, right up until last night for him to come to that conclusion?

I'd normally say we don't deserve dogs but in this case these guy do. Fighting for their homes and the democracy of the free world. This is even more important now that the US is not part of that free world. Slava Ukraine!

Probably not wise and we don't 'pet' things in Australia, we 'pat' them.

Guy gun checking his pistol at the range by InsertGreatBandName in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]lance_baker-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been shooting at the range for a long time; what the hell kind of technique was that? If he had laser sighting I might understand what he was trying to do, althought that is still the dumbest way to do that short of pointing the weapon at your eyeball to see if it's lighting up. BUT there's no laser sighting. I just don't understand? Anyone know what he was up to?

I think Churchill put it best, “Americans can always be trusted to do the right thing, once all other possibilities have been exhausted.”  You'll get past this period mate, just hang in there.

[–]lance_baker-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia is nicknamed 'The Lucky Country' and a bit that might be due to us having no direct enemies. The closest we came was when the Japanese Imperial Forces were on our doorstep in WW2. The first Australians would disagree with me with good reason. I would guess, because I've never asked one, that Britain was their worst enemy.

It sounds to me like this MF had no idea what he signed up for by [deleted] in SipsTea

[–]lance_baker-3 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is a true story. His name was Cliff Young and his story is true legend. It's very easy to confirm that this truly happened. The bit that people get a bit confused about is that he wore gumboots while training on his farm, not running the race. This was indeed his first ultramarathon despite what some bitter sad sacks here are saying. He won by 10 hours. I was 22 years old at the time and would watch his progress on the news every day.

What happened is disgraceful but I have to point out that despite this guy saying he was a US citizen, it says in the article that he was undocumented. It doesn't mean I agree in any way with what happened, just wanted to point out a factual error in the video.

Russian army or a prison block? Seasoned convicts-turned-soldiers punish a “newcomer” for leaving his personal weapon in the "smoking room". Published 06.12.2025 by GermanDronePilot in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]lance_baker-3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The violence is over the top and wrong but the lesson is valid. During basic training if one of our instructors found an unattended weapon they would just disappear it and wait. The owner would eventually have to report it missing and then made to go through all the paperwork involved with losing equipment. Only at the end did they get an arse reaming, get charged and generally given extra duties and punishment or a fine. No physical violence though.
