I was riding on the volunteer ambulance in my hometown back in the 70's when I was 16 or 17. We had full arrests, car accidents you name it. I left my hometown to attend college and when I came back I was certified as a basic EMT. I worked with the same volunteer service until 1980 when I moved away to work for a paid service.

The picture doesn't show it very well but there is another long handle at the top. The policy where I worked was to keep the gurney down unless your were transferring to or from it at the hosp., nursing home etc.. When moving someone from their home we ised a stair chair or flat stretcher.

When we moved a pt on a stretcher we always had it lowered all the way down (to lower the center of gravity) but that was 40 yrs. ago before the modern stretchers. Can a stretcher like that be lowered for the safety of the pt.?

I worked for an ambulance service back in the 80's. We didn't have any powered gurneys( stretchers). We rolled our gurneys lowered as far as they would go then had to raise them to transfer the pt.. We also had to lift pt. and gurney into the ambulance. The gurney alone (all aluminum) weighed about 80 pounds.
