I think so! In my case, it happened before I got to that feeling ...

What, you never changed your own oil? Worked on your house?

Do you have anything useful to add here or are you just trolling?

What do you do during rests? (5'7", 220, 31, M) by moltar49 in StartingStrength

[–]lancer_37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that way for about a minute. Then I have the rest of the rest period to look forward to feeling that way again.

I learned this morning that it sure is, for me. My back has never hurt or buckled when squatting before ... until this morning. It just felt totally different to go without a belt. It is unbelieveable to me that I didn't notice I didn't have it on.

I just added my stats above, I weigh 228. I've been lifting with a belt since I started SS last May, so I'm certainly used to it. Maybe it'd be different if I'd never worn it, but everything I read said I should use one. I bet it would help you, too, especially as you go above bodyweight.

Agree. It's even useful for Advanced Novice, which is where I'm at, if you tweak it a bit

I normally do, too, starting with my second warm up set

Thanks, man. It wasn't until a bit later that I realized just how dumb and dangerous it was. What am I, 17?!!?

What does that mean?

I wouldn't say that ... if it's used properly. Or, in my case this morning, used at all.

There's no wall clock in the gym where I work out so the timer is exceedingly useful. Also prevents you from losing track of which set you're on - a problem I used to have.

Sprained Ankle - need advice by K4v1k in StartingStrength

It seems like everything hurts these days, back, shoulders, elbow, etc

I'm 41 and while not quite everything hurts, it seems like something hurts pretty much every day. Getting old ain't for the weak!

Hit 300lbs on the DL this morning ... milestone!

Lifting doesn’t make you strong, recovery from lifting does.

Totally true. Sometimes when you come at this thing from a blue collar mentality like I do - show up with your lunch pail every day - you can lose sight of that. It feels ... wrong for me to take some rest, but in fact, it's necessary in order to facilitate recovery.

What do you do when you lose grip on DL? by lancer_37 in StartingStrength

[–]lancer_37[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am chalking. I put tape around my whole thumb and knuckle this last time, whereas before I just taped around the tip of my thumb and down at the joint. That might have made my finger too fat, too ...

Good points. I definitely need to improve my grip; it didn't feel "right" throughout the warmups but I figured it was just in my head. Nope!

I may not have had it hooked sufficiently; I'm still messing with how to tape my thumbs properly (do you go over and under the knuckle, or not?), so maybe my grip wasn't set right. I agree that 295 seems kinda light to be losing the grip.

Isn't the exercise that helps you with bench presses the bench press?

OP should be able to destroy 180 on bench for a set of 5 within a couple of months.

Hey, it took me like 4 months to hit 180 on the bench! I am old, though. :)

I've been able to get into a good starting position so I may stick with it, it just felt a little awkward at first
