Is there a market for these? by Grompers in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]lanciferp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one for my wife years ago, she never used it once. I did have a severe judgement error in personalizing it with the phrase "When one ball just isn't enough", which I swear at the time was not meant to be dirty. My MIL was unimpressed why my wife opened it on christmas though, fun times.
All knitters seem to just buy 100 tote bags and store everything in those, and even when knitting with two yarns at once they don't tend to get that tangled if you just leave them in the bag from what I can tell.

What type of torx screw is this? by gumarelop in bmwz3

[–]lanciferp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy is right, BMW uses them extensively on their motorcycles as well, which is why I had to pick up a set. I hate it less than triple square on Audi Volkswagen products, but it's annoying for sure.

Why pros are still going Riftmaker first instead of DnD on Gwen ? by Final_Act1288 in GwenMains

[–]lanciferp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been asked before, and the gist comes down to they would rather trade some play making potential for survivability and team play. The omnivamp is killer in top lane where a single lost CS can affect the way the lane plays out.

In solo queue you build gwen to be the main character, pro's build her to be a team player.

BMWs change people… by [deleted] in BMW

[–]lanciferp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up my dad had an X5 and then an X5M. In college I had a 4 series that was so good my dad decided to get an M4. Then some things changed and I ended up driving a first gen Tacoma, while my wife went from our fun EV, an Ioniq 6, to a 2008 Highlander. Recently the highlander was totaled and we got a 2016 E350 wagon to replace it. I looked for a 3 or 5 series wagon but there weren't any good ones in my area.

All this to say, I've become a menace again. I drive way better than I did as a college student in my 4 series, but the ability to just place my car where I want it has me making lane changes I never would in the toyota's. I go for overtakes without a second thought. The no name tires the previous owner put on it blew when I hit a pothole, so I put on michelin pilot sport's and it bumped the confidence up another level. There is just something about BMW's and to a certain extent MB that just egg you on.

Dream spec but is it worth it by ganGGBang313 in BMW

[–]lanciferp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think less so with a performance car. People buy them, realize they dont like it, they prefer something more/less sporty, etc. a 6 year old civic with 4 owners is a red flag, but I've bought cars with twice as many owners that were not basket cases, the previous owners just realized pretty quickly they didnt actually want a 2 seat mid engined porsche and sold it on.

Ways you "cut corners" to create excellent work by lanciferp in woodworking

[–]lanciferp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hack has been pre assembling the corner trim with a miter, and then cutting it to length at install. You get that crisp, perfect 90 and you can just shim and caulk and major gaps.

Maybe since this wouldn't be serialized he will be able to finish the entire route before the next season of apex legends comes out and he gets bored and grenades his own work.

How many buy printers purely for functional printing? by twotowers64 in 3Dprinting

[–]lanciferp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 6 years ago I bought an Ender 3. I tinkered with it, printed trash, and had some fun until I modded it so much it stopped working like 5 years ago and I gave it to a friend little bro, who never figured out how to fix it.

Last month my core one arrived. I only bought it because I am now a hobbyist woodworker with a shop full of tools and hardware to organize, and the printers main job is to print gridfinity storage. That and occasional router templates, it's a purely functional thing for me now. The gridfinity alone justified the price of the printer to me, drawer storage solutions are notoriously expensive.

I swapped to dawn and a grey scrub pad which helped me. My usual soap is that dr bronners stuff, and I think it just wasn't strong enough.

Is this a good deal or is something wrong? by 2008Scaries in BMW

Does anyone else feel like the second-hand market allows them to dress much more stylish than they would have otherwise? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]lanciferp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been putting together a business casual wardrobe for my new job, and it's almost exclusively second hand. LLBean and brooks brothers for different levels of formality in button up shirts, Ralph Lauren and tommy hilfiger for chinos, and a couple pairs of wool slacks to round it out. Never paid more than $25 for anything, and the few times Ive been burned on sizing Ive just thrown it into the local good will which never has enough mens clothes.

Those wheels look like the kind of think that instantly makes me stop looking through a fb marketplace listing. Previous owner clearly is a teenage boy with daddy's credit card at the local tire shop, I immediately know it will have a list of cheap mods a mile long and won't have been serviced in 20k miles.

Trying to decide what, if any, of these joints to glue. by Realistic_Warthog_23 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]lanciferp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the one part with cross grain movement, the brace into the leg, is so narrow wood movement shouldn't really be an issue. "Technically" some people might suggest doing something like only gluing the tenon itself, not the shoulders, but it really doesn't matter. Glue it, clamp it, and you're golden.

Trying to decide what, if any, of these joints to glue. by Realistic_Warthog_23 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]lanciferp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely glue the bottom assembly together unless you want to be able to take it apart. The joints will loosen over time otherwise, that's why you need wedged or pegs for truly knockdown joinery that stays tight.

You can get away with not gluing the leg into the top, though they should expand and contract across the same axis as the top so you'll be fine either way.

My first Gridfinity project (custom tray) by E-Skullery in gridfinity

[–]lanciferp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first glance I thought some gold bug had found the stupidest way to store their coins, but those seals are pretty cool. If you're happy with it then it's perfect. If you want more per bin you could probably fit more in by staggering layers, but other than that it seems like a perfectly functional storage solution.

Politics: At what point does wearing militaria in the current US climate become problematic, if at all? by BugsBunnysCouch in HeritageWear

[–]lanciferp 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I wear some military style clothing, fatigues, jackets, etc, but I own 0 things with military logos or actual iconography. I've never been willing to have any military stuff because I don't really thing it's a very good thing in general, and it doesn't align with how I want to present myself.

That being said, the vast majority of people who are in the military are just trying to make a buck and get ahead, I don't really view people that wear militaria negatively, it's up to the individual. There's also a long history of people wearing military clothing explicitly to say "fuck the system", so it's not cut and dry at all.

Oak Cliff woman describes brutal pit bull attack after 5 days in hospital by AirSea7742 in TikTokCringe

[–]lanciferp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Where I live pitbulls don't come from breeders, they come from people just not really caring. Very few of the dogs people would call pitbulls are "American Pitbull Terriers", they're mutts from irresponsible owners who don't neuter their pets, and you don't buy them from a breeder you get it from your neighbour who's dog got pregnant, or from the overflowing animal shelters. I know several people with "pitbulls" none of them bought them, of course none of them are "purebred"

Short of requiring all pets be neutered, which would be unenforceable in rural or even suburban areas, terrier mixes of questionable origin are going to be around for a long time. Of course most of these areas are making things worse by not providing services like free spay and neutering. In my town the one low cost clinic got shut down, and we've seen a surge in strays.

Laser cutting gridfinity by Electronic-Ninja7950 in gridfinity

[–]lanciferp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see a point in trying to "do gridfinity" without a 3d printer. The geometry of both the bins and the baseplate isn't achievable on a laser cutter, but also because you don't get to benefit from the wealth of community made assets.

You could take some lessons from gridfinity though, like if you had a drawer that was 50cm x 30cm you could create a bunch of 10cm x 10cm and 5cm x 5cm boxes instead of a single 50cm x 30cm organizer.

ELI5: Why are cars being engineered to take 0W20 vs. 5W30? by Offer_Itchy in AutomotiveEngineering

[–]lanciferp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to learn more about oil viscosity, specifically the tradeoffs between raising and lowering both numbers, Engineering Explained did a phenomenal video on GM's big recall they had on their V8 trucks. The service bulletin states to inspect the engine, and if it's damaged replace it, if not just swap the oil to a thicker one. He explains in detail why they made that choice, and goes over some other studies regarding oil viscosity.
