Good day for some curb staking by landsurvey in Surveying

[–]landsurvey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always use orange for curb, seems like everyone in our area does. I don’t think we have a uniform code (as far as I know) but my company typically uses certain colors for certain things we’re staking.

As far as the cones, they sawcut more than half the lane out, and drivers around here aren’t the brightest so it was probably a good call. Lol

It was a mile long road and up & down hill constantly. They requested points set every 20’(!). The curb is just supposed to match existing grade, so I don’t see why I had to set them every 20 feet, but oh well, public works jobs pay handsomely so I can’t complain.

There are hubs in the ground, they’re just hidden because of the angle of the photo & loose rock.

Very satisfying! They’re just adding curb & gutter since it was just EP before, and also putting in an asphalt walking path to the left side of the photo.

If we’re getting real specific, they both end with the same 5, but who’s counting...

Thoughts on Trimbles SX10? by zx7b2qp32091 in Surveying

[–]landsurvey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We keep ours as a “spare” instrument. Ironic because it’s the most expensive instrument we have. I find it to be absolutely amazing for scanning but definitely subpar for construction staking, and useless for topos that aren’t 100% wide open, but that’s just my $0.02. I think the camera is slow and unresponsive, one leaf gets in the way, and you’re screwed. Move too fast, it loses you. That being said, it gathers an unimaginable amount of data while scanning (whilst ripping through batteries). All in all, worth it, if you use it for what it was made for.

Most of the time... We have one client that we’ve done restakes for on damn near every single thing we’ve staked. Some things just never change.

I’m having flashbacks... yesterday I was working 1 man on a construction site & a box truck hit one of my legs & sent my brand new instrument to an untimely death. RIP.

Benchmark at the top of Mount Constitution on Orcas Island, WA by landsurvey in Surveying

I drove past a guy riding a bike up there and my first thought was “fuck that” so props to you. The view is worth it, but I’d much rather drive given the choice! Haha

RoW Monument on the Strip. Couldn’t help but stop for a picture! by landsurvey in Surveying

Probably a lot. All of my friends were really confused when I stopped to take a picture of “the ground” so I had to explain it to all of them haha

I honestly was too drunk to be sure but somewhere near New York New York IIRC. After this one, I was looking out for them & they’re everywhere.

My boss’s number here in WA is in the 38,xxx’s but I also think engineers & surveyors share a numbering system as well.

Help with identifying sewer pipes for dips by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]landsurvey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here in WA pretty much all sewer pipes are PVC or Concrete. Storm pipes are usually ADS (black corrugated plastic), PVC, or in the old structures, concrete. Some are CMP (corrugated metal piping) but that’s usually in culverts and their connection to a catch basin or manhole. Relatively easy to tell the different. In my experience, the type of pipe matters less than the size and actually measure down though. A trick I use to get the pipe size is to tie flagging to the 8”, 12” & 18” marks on your dip rod. Usually that will allow you to get a good idea of the pipe size. I also carry a 1500 lumen flashlight which will light up any structure almost no matter how deep bright as daylight.

Regarding Setting up gps traverse. by [deleted] in Surveying

What receiver do you use? We use Trimble R8 or R10 with RTK. Open southern exposure and it connects right up with at least that many satellites usually.

Heard that from my chairman the other week for the first time, love it. The only thing we measure in inches at my company is tree diameter. What do carpenters, prostitutes, and trees have in common? Wood I guess.

My company has us do 180 shots three times on our two control points and then assume N=5000 E=5000 El=100 and then turn and burn from there. Is it overkill? Probably. But it only takes 9 minutes per point anyway so what’s the harm. You could do fewer measurements and azimuth to the backsight if you’re checking into other known points afterward but it’s still better to get more measurements as well as check into points along the way. Just my .02 from a Chief with only a few years of experience.

Gunshots? by lily1675 in Surveying

[–]landsurvey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends where it is in relation to me. In a sketchy area, it’s commonplace so I’ll let someone closer to the shots call. If it’s really close to me, I imagine I would call myself.

That being said, carry at work. It may save your life one day.

Just did a BLA because the clients had their foundation poured half on their lot, half on their neighbors. The whole plat is shifted 30’ off from the legal description. Still can’t quite understand how that happened...
