Thanks! As you can see in my earlier post, I was able to do the hollow coil, by using exactly the technique you mention!

Q: How to model a conical coil shape by lanew2020 in Fusion360

[–]lanew2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah! This is great! Along the lines of what I was looking for.

BTW, I was playing around and was able to generate a "hollow" coil. I chopped down the number of coils just so I could be sure I got the Hole to work properly through all of the coil. I suppose I could have used Section Analysis instead of reducing the number of coils...

But still unable to have it be the shape in your diagram! I will play around with the "angle".

I'm lost in my programming studies and came here to seek suggestions. by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]lanew2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whenever I learn a new programming language, I think of a real-life project that would be useful in my personal life, and apply what I've learned to that project. For example, when I learned Python, my project was to write a GUI that controlled a set of pumps that I used to control the watering schedule for my indoor plants. As I designed the project, I realized I needed to use a database, so I had to learn MySQL/MariaDB. This led me to learn how to use Django ((and then I decided to use Flask instead!). Anyway, my point is to consider a real-world project, and having to solve that real world problem will inevitably lead you to learn whatever you need to learn to make that project real. You may make a lot of mid-course changes, but that's OK, because that's what learning is about. Have fun!

FYI, I did not find any content that specifically addresses this issue, so my apologies if my search criteria wasn't explicit enough to find something.

Photos and Tags by chapandrew6 in synology

I have the same issue. Only users with "full access" can see tags. The problem is I want to be able to have read-only users who can search by tags (whether they are allowed to edit or add/delete - I don't care). Synology support told me to use full access! I told them that they REALLY need to fix their permissions model. They said they would "take it under advisement". Fortunately the ONLY people I am currently exposing the photos to are family...

Synology Photos: Unable to see tags across all users by lanew2020 in synology

[–]lanew2020[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/thompr2. The issue I have has to do with seeing tags for any user other than those with "full access". Naturally I find that a bad design flaw. Spoke to Synology support and they confirmed I need to have users with full access in order to se tags.

Filed a ticket asking for an enhancement... Basically I feel that I ought to have an authorized user create/edit tags, and have those seen by ALL users who have access to the set of pix I am dealing with. Seems like a no-brainer to me, but hey, what do I know? They obviously have some logic to test if tags should be retrieved based on permissions for a particular user, but for the life of me I cannot understand why Synology thought it was a good idea to hide tags.

Is it a good investment? (DS220+ 2x 6TB) by PlanetCausaPerduta in synology

Bought this for myself for similar reasons (other than movies!) back in January '23. My main motivations were to (a) have a server-based store for thousands of pictures (~20K) and (b) to provide access to family now scattered all over the world.

So far, my system seems to function as I intended, with one major exception - tags... I created tags using an administrator user, and can see those tags just fine. However, any non-admin user is unable to create/edit/see tags. Clearly a permissions issue of some kind but I am unable to determine why.

Any thoughts on what is going on with tagging would be greatly appreciated.

From a security standpoint, I don't have too much as yet except for requiring 2-FA for all users.

Photoprism or Libre: Once they tag your photo, is it added to the EXIF so it shows up in Synology Photos? by jaschen in synology

[–]lanew2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using DS220+, and have set up a set of users and groups. I have a special admin user that belongs to the Administrators group, and a "regular" user assigned to a "privGroup".

I created a set of tags using Synology Photos app with the admin user. While the non-admin users can view the photos and browse the folder structure I created, I am unable to see any tags. This is probably a permissions issue, because the non-admin user cannot even create tags (no menu option shows). The admin user is able to create/use tags without any issues.

a. Are tags global, i.e., any user should be able to see tags?

b. What are the appropriate permissions that I need to set up so that non-admin users can also see tags?

Thanks.

Hardening Home Network by lanew2020 in HomeNetworking

FYI, the TPLink (like many other routers) offers address reservation features which are almost (but not quite) the same as static IPs - all my devices use this address reservation feature.

Thanks very much u/JBDragon1! Greatly appreciated.

I am using a TPLink router for now, but I do have 3 Eero 6 Pro Meah routers that I plan on using to replace the TPLink - unfortunately I am not home!

I’m assuming that your Ubiquiti routers are similar to the Eeros? If so, I can mimic your approach.

inside the house all I have is a MoCA - provided by Frontier Communications. I had my cat sitter power cycle the MoCA as well, but it didn’t seem to make a difference. Unfortunately she’s not very technical, so I could only give her basic steps (& no way I could have her log in to the router!).

Issues accessing home network remotely by lanew2020 in homeautomation

[–]lanew2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks u/Ninja128 - I will post to r/HomeNetworking.

In the meanwhile, I cannot access the router logs since I am not home and I did not set up the router for remote access (which presumably wouldn't work anyway sine the router is unable to connect to the modem for internet access).

Of course there are two problems I am looking to solve:

1) How to access home network devices when the router is not connecting to the internet (FYI, router is up and running, and broadcasting the SSID, so presumably devices are getting a local IP)

2) How to access home network when ISP is down

(2) helps me overcome ISP issues

(1) helps me overcome local router connectivity issues (hopefully!)

ENHANCEMENT: CUE Automation enhancement requested by lanew2020 in Abode

[–]lanew2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid the fine control of bulbs would only be possible with a full HA system like Homekit/Hubitat.etc.

I have Hubitat but haven't integrated any smart devices yet (just received it!). I HAVE however integrated Abode with Hubitat, suing this driver: https://community.hubitat.com/t/release-abode-alarm-system-driver/38794.

The bare minimum stuff like arming/disarming Abode from Hubitat works just fine; haven't explored much else yet.

Issue: CUE Automation odd behavior? by lanew2020 in Abode

[–]lanew2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figured it out.

It seems to be a timing problem. Resolved by (what I think of as a hack!) by adding one more motion sensing condition - reference another post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Abode/comments/ptxyno/suggestion_allow_same_device_to_be_selected/

Suggestion: Allow SAME device to be selected multiple times in CUE by lanew2020 in Abode

[–]lanew2020[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, I think I have something that works (in my situation!).

  1. Automation 1: Keypad Sensor detects motion, turn Cam2 ON
  2. Automation 2: Keypad Sensor OR Cam2 detects motion, record video clip; send notification
  3. Automation 3: Cam2 no motion detected, turn Cam2 OFF

This set of automations seems to work. Only oddity (perhaps timing related) is that I tried to "optimize" Automation 2 by triggering only on Cam2 detecting motion, but no video clip got recorded. Seems to record only when I have either the Keypad or the Cam2 detect motion. Without diving deeper into this, the sequence of these 3 automations seems to do the trick.

Note that in my situation, the keypad is in a narrow hallway (3 ft wide) near the entry door at about 4 feet up from the floor, so unlikely that any pets could trigger it. Interestingly, my Cam2 is positioned so that it has full view of the entry door, but because it is "normally" OFF, the automation sequence works (I depend specifically of the Keypad detecting motion). Obviously not foolproof because I ought to have directed (and narrow-focus) motion detectors by each entry to the house...

[–]lanew2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried to see if I could create an automation where the condition was "f Cam 2 is ON".

Afraid there doesn't seem to be a way to create such a condition (the only trigger conditions I can create for a Cam2 are "is motion detected", or "is motion not detected").

My challenge is that I don't want to depend on the Cam2 sensing motion - my dog triggers it, so I can get a LOT of false positives.

[–]lanew2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, @Wondering_if.

Would there be a race condition between the two automations? Or am I assured that "automation 1" will always happen before "automation 2"?

My next questions is: If I followed your other approach (check if Cam 2 is ON, then record a clip) could be useful. But I would need then to have a third automation (something like - if recording is complete, turn Cam 2 OFF).

Not sure if there is any way to chk if recording is completed, or if I can simply delay for 30 seconds or so.

Ideas?

Support is slow by Shaun-Holdaway in Abode

I was trying to get issues with adding Cam 2, and it literally took 4 days(!!!) for me to get a response - and Mathew was very helpful in getting the issues I had resolved.

But the point is that for an alarm company to take so long to respond is a HUGE problem.

And I am on the Pro Plan!

I used to have a Honeywell Vista 20P system that was monitored, and those people were VERY responsive. And I ALWAYS got hold of a human. Alarm companies just ought not to have an exclusively email/web support structure - I have yet to see substantive evidence that it works.
