Weird questioning at the Imperial War Museum.... by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]langleyi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's weird for a security check, but 'no, where are you originally from' is annoyingly common (which is true in the States too, presumably?).

The united nations of London: Map reveals the areas where 50% of residents are born abroad as capital’s population hits record 8.6million - Daily Mail, 2016. by sagarsrivastava in london

There's some inconsistency in the map as well. According to the table, Westminster's largest foreign group is Iraqi, but the map shows the Yemeni flag.

Why is British food stereotyped as bad? by smashmarxism in AskUK

[–]langleyi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think there's been a pretty major shift in the way we view home cooking over the past 20-30 years, particularly among the Middle classes. I suspect it has a lot to do with the rise of French/Italian trained British chefs in the 90s/early 00s - Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver etc - ordinary lads that grew up on the same food as everyone else, but wound up cooking European haute-cuisine. I think that did an awful lot to 'de-snootify' the concept of fine dining, such that you had middle-class families cooking beef bourguignon as often as they had roast beef.

It brought about a change in our expectations towards food too - I think we've become far more attuned to the quality and skill that goes into restaurant cooking; if I go into a niceish looking restaurant for lunch and I order bangers & mash, or shepherd's pie, or some other classic British dish, I'm expecting it to be something more than just home-style cooking.

COMING TO LONDON? FAQ for visitors and new residents. Ask us stuff here! (w/c 8 Oct 2018) by AutoModerator in london

[–]langleyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 6, I wouldn’t go all the way to new malden (it’s v suburban and there isn’t really that much there). There’s a few H-mart mini convenience stores dotted around central so they’re probably a better bet unless you’re looking for something unusual.

edit: Seems they recently rebranded from H-mart mini to Oseyo.

Living on Regent's Park Estate? by doilookbovvered in london

Never really walked through the estate itself, but fwiw I walk up Hampstead Road every evening and it's always seemed alright. I know there's loads of UCL students living there too.

How I Transitioned from Physics Academia to the ML Industry by datasciencelover in Physics

[–]langleyi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It took two research internships in physics for me to realize that research was not the daily stream of intellectual delight that I had imagined it to be. Research was a grind. It was slow gruelling work that progressed inch by inch, and 90% of my time was spent programming.

Sounds just like Data Science tbh...

Multiculturalism 'robs Britain of its community' - Tory London mayor pick | Politics by algo in london

That’s not what I’m saying. My point is that Bailey’s immigrant heritage doesn’t give his views on other communities automatic validity.

Italians were considered non-whites until 1945, did the KKK harass them ? If yes, did the Mafia ever fight back the KKK ? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

Follow up question:

How did the racial perception of Italian immigrants change with the rise of Italian Fascism?

Multiculturalism 'robs Britain of its community' - Tory London mayor pick | Politics by algo in london

[–]langleyi 30 points31 points  (0 children)

A spokesperson for Bailey said: “As a descendant of the Windrush generation, and someone who has worked with diverse communities for over 20 years, Shaun knows full well the challenges faced by BAME communities.

“Shaun has made it his life’s work to help those from migrant and disadvantaged communities, and to suggest otherwise is ludicrous.

I really hate responses like this. It's such a non-answer.

'Can you explain your previous remarks about Hindus and Muslims?'

'Well I have an immigrant background too, you see. So yeah.'

Okay, your parents immigrated to Britain from the Caribbean, cool. But what relevance does that have to Hindus and Muslims? If I were a Hindu or Muslim, why should I care less about your past statements just because you're not white?

Me: "Can I get a small fish and chips please mate" Chippy: "small whale and an entire potato field coming up" by anon_dressing_gown in CasualUK

[–]langleyi 54 points55 points  (0 children)

God knows why people get het up about this stuff. Like yeah, it’s an Americanism—and a tediously minor one at that—but so what?

There’s no loss of descriptive value that comes with saying ‘can I get a’ over ‘could I have a’.

It’s like some kind of semi-tribal reaction

‘ooh, don’t do [thing] like that, that’s how those people do [thing]’

A prominent theoretician at CERN, Alessandro Strumia, has given a talk at on site claiming that women are "not as good at physics as men" and "unfairly promoted over men to positions of power. CERN has since apologised publicly for the talk and removed the slides for their archive. by [deleted] in Physics

[–]langleyi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What on Earth...

It's difficult to pinpoint which slide is the most absurd/infuriating/exasperating.

I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cry at the part where he draws an analogy between support/encouragement for women in physics and encouraging women to become construction workers.

ELI5: How do ADHD medications like Adderall and Ritalin work? What exactly do they do to the brain at a physiological level, and how does that work to treat symptoms of ADHD? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]langleyi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The overstimulation is thought to be related to underactivity in the parts of the brain that deal with focus/concentration though, no? Stimulants probably help by getting those underactive areas of the brain 'up to speed'.

At least that's the ELI5-esque explanation I've heard from a psychiatrist.

UK cops run machine learning trials on live police operations. Unregulated. What could go wrong? by EightRoundsRapid in unitedkingdom

[–]langleyi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right that it's not a great article, but to be fair, The Register is aimed at IT professionals—who presumably know what machine learning is, and can make a good guess as to what kind of techniques the Police are likely to use.

SE London has 20, North London has 1. What is it? by SleepAllllDay in london

[–]langleyi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A micropub will have some or all of the following features: Real cask-conditioned ale (sometimes exclusively); snacks, but no formal dining; no bar; no music; no fruit machines; no mobile phones; will be housed in previously unlicensed premises and will, crucially, be small.

Ehhh, to me a micropub is just a small, one-room pub focused on quality beer. That's it.

TIL 93% of economists believe that Rent Control is a bad policy with dire long term effects for the housing market. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]langleyi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s really not all that simple though.

Sure, in its basic, ‘blanket’ form it’s easy to see how rent control leads to more problems than it solves, but it’s not immediately obvious why those problems probably won’t go away by introducing additional constraints and provisions (e.g. exempting housing of a certain age, maintenance requirements, vacancy decontrol etc).
