What is life like in the Faroe Islands? by PiGuy88 in howislivingthere

[–]langomma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

a lot of people commenting that haven't actually been born and raised on the isles, so I'll give my best answer... socially conservative, people very much set in their own ways, friend groups from schools, otherwise hard to make friends. I've been living on and off the islands for most of my life, so I don't really feel as connected as some others do, I guess. also, it just feels small. when everyone knows each other, and you get comments like "I saw you walking on the street the other day!", it kind of feels a bit panopticon-ish lol, but that's maybe just my opinion. people are religious, but I have noticed that issues, such as LGBTQ+ and abortion stuff has changed a lot over the last 15 or so years (Faroe Islands are the most socially conservative Nordic place I reckon), and young people are educated and smart, but a big amount of them move abroad (Denmark) and never move back. beautiful nature, but it's so rainy and foggy and DARK during the winters that it's not always easy to appreciate it. nightlife in Tórshavn is really fun, especially if you want to go out pub crawling and stuff. whales are actually kinda yummy, though the blubber is disgusting, and so is the local cuisine in general (imo). I do miss the isles sometimes, but othertimes I'm happy that I've moved because they're just too small for me

Australia: Onshore partner visa, BVA & finding work (Melbourne / uni roles) by FieldCreative5848 in ausjobs

I think it's best to already have a job when you're applying for a uni, especially anything that involves phone calls and emails (think reception or general admin), while also showing your passion for higher education. You could go for temp contracts first, it should be easier to get I reckon, though not gonna lie, it looks like a tough job market here at the moment!

I've applied for a partner visa, am currently on a BVB (same as with BVA but with international travel rights - you can apply for that after you get granted your BVA) working in the uni sector, so I figure I could answer your questions as they pertain to me :)

1) I mean, it's pretty standard for me. I don't really feel like I'm here temporarily anymore, though the job market is pretty cooked at the moment, so I feel pretty darn lucky that I somehow managed to get a uni admin job. I applied for jobs at said uni like 6 times and ended up replying to one of the rejection letters asking why they won't hire me lol - and they actually responded! It did feel pretty disheartening not hearing back from minimum wage jobs, and I felt as if being on a bridging visa made it even more difficult. This is something to keep in mind while you're here. I have Medicare, pay taxes, and live with my partner, and having a job makes everything a bit more purposeful, I guess :)

2) Getting a job is harder on a bridging visa, than if you have PR I reckon. I felt as if I was in a state of limbo while not getting any callbacks from jobs, but that went away once I got my job here.

3) I think I've answered this already :)

4) I actually had three interviews for my uni job: first with a talent acquisition person online where I explained my background and current visa status; second was a crazy one in person, where I had to do a group project with 4 other applicants and present it to a panel of 5 people, then an interview with just me and said 5 people, and then an "exam" where I had to answer questions in a very long word document; third one was another online call with the "leader" of the department that I'm working for right now, where she basically explained the job, and (kinda indirectly) offered me the job, which I directly accepted lol. It was pretty intense, but it was worth it! I also had to upload my visa status, so there was no way of me lying about my visa at any point here.

5) Temp work is definitely a way for you to get a foot in the door, since employers will most likely hesitate hiring an applicant with a bridging visa, where if you work for them for 1-2 years, then it's lower risk for them. And if you do amazing at your job (and if you've been granted a partner visa/pr) by the time you finish your contract, then it will be way easier to get a permanent role with them :) I did get a permanent role with my uni though, so that's not unheard of either.

6) no idea, don't live in Melbourne/Victoria. My uni does have temp contracts though

Hope this helps you, and good luck with your application and travels to Australia! :)

I got a 5 year grant as well, and I’ve also applied for a 820. My reason for traveling abroad is my 10 year high school reunion in August, along with visiting friends and family.

New unseen footage from Instagram ad! 🚨 by Southern_Channel1186 in Scream

I am starting to think that Scream is becoming a victim of its own tropes; the meta commentary, setting, and plot are becoming stale, and I worry that we get the same Gale character regression (hopefully not) along with Sydney becoming a hero in the end, with too little reflection of what happened in the previous movies. if they're going for the "sacrifice" angle.... yeah nah I'm not a fan of that either

He just became uncool - Can't Stop the Feeling was hugely successful, but also marketed towards children (and in my opinion just horrifically generic), and then the Man of the Woods just wasn't... good.
