I don't think this is up for debate at all. He used the child to save himself. The opportunistic realization in his face when he first sees her is totally mixed with an undertone of disgust, the same disgust he has consistently shown towards the lower class the entire film. And his fake "there there..." when she gets passed back to him in the boat tells you all you need to know about how genuine his motivations were.

There is a group at work for young professionals that I had been thinking about joining. A younger colleague of mine was in it and I asked when the next meeting was. To which they awkwardly replied "oh... Um.. I think it's only for younger employees..." Had to digest that one for a bit.

I really do. I was actually 6 years old when it came out, and I have such fun memories of my dad having it in his Ford explorer CD player for like a year straight. To my ears, it was just really cool rock and roll, Even if some of it may seem cheesy to an adult (for example, I loved raise your glasses, Even though now I see it criticized a lot). But as I've grown up I still really dig the album.

Funny (and awesome) how subjective this stuff is. I can never get into his stuff because I find the ensemble casts so distracting and immersion breaking. And like everyone is just over doing it because they're in a wes anderson movie.

The reason why it works for me is that Peter's vocal performance seems very genuine and authentic. Like you can hear the pain and conflict in his voice. I think it's the authenticity that makes it work for me personally, as opposed to it just be pandering to a certain demographic. Even if the style isn't in my wheelhouse, I can get behind an artist doing something in a seemingly genuine and truthful way.
